Upcoming Film Tells the Story of Berlin’s Iconic KitKatClubïżŒ

A new documentary centers around the story of Berlin’s iconic and sex-positive club KitKatClub. A sign at the club’s garden inspired the film’s title, KitKatClub – Das Leben ist ein Zirkus (“KitKatClub – Life Is A Circus”). The film is set to release in 2023.

Opened in 1994, KitKatClub is infamous for its unusual dress code, high-profile Techno DJs, and sex-positive rules. Club goers may have sex openly in the venue. The club’s name is inspired by a burlesque club featured in the American musical Cabaret called Kit Kat Club.

“The film started for me as a tribute to the legendary club, but [it] is increasingly becoming a film about the unique people behind it, above all of course [the owner] Kirsten [KrĂŒger], who I have come to know and appreciate over the years as the woman who holds everything together.”

Philipp Fussenegger, the director of the documentary and regular visitor of KitKatClub, seeks to emphasize the crowd and their stories

Research Suggests Music Improves Mental Health and Wellbeing

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open suggests music improves mental health and wellbeing. After reviewing 26 studies across several countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the research showed that music may provide a clinically significant boost to mental health. Whether participants sang, played or listened to music in the studies, the analysis showed that the mental health benefits were nearly the same as exercise and weight loss. Future research is needed to confirm the findings, however, the results prove promising for music lovers around the world.

“All of us are experts in music because we’ve spent thousands of hours listening to music, codifying it in our brain and responding to it. Is it any wonder what when we listen to music, something remarkable happens?”

Kim Cunio, an associate professor and convener of musicology at the Australian National University, who was not involved in the research.

London Assembly Considers New Drug Safety Measures for Nightclubs

London Assembly’s Health Committee published a report arguing that drug checking services should be provided at clubs and music events in London to combat drug fatalities in the city. Drug-related deaths in England and Wales are at their highest level since comparable statistics began.

Caroline Russell AM, Chair of the Health Committee, said in a press statement:

Too many people are still dying from drug-related causes in London. We investigated how to address this tragedy and find out what practical, life-saving interventions could be used to reduce drug harm in our city.

Our investigation found that naloxone could save someone’s life if it’s used quickly after an opioid overdose. That is why we are urging the Mayor to ensure the Met routinely carry naloxone, a simple and proven way to reduce opioid deaths.

Additional measures recommended in our report, such as a pilot for safe drug consumption rooms and the introduction of drug checking services, can start to bring down the growing numbers of people sadly losing their lives due to problematic drug use.

The report urges the Government to adopt a national naloxone program in England already adopted by Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. It also asks that the Metropolitan police station provide officers with nasal naloxone spray when they come in contact with drug users who are in danger of overdosing.

What If House and Techno Were Friends?

Guest post from house music artist Eric Sharp

“Eww, house music events have way too many frat bros.” “Ugh, techno parties are so snobby.” House and techno feel diametrically opposed in many ways these days. Genre purists seem to drench the underground scene producing events that are very narrow in focus. As someone who came of age in the rave scene during the 1990s, this all seems a bit silly to me.
