Russia has launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine earlier this morning, Thursday, February 24th. As this shocking news spreads across the world, many industry members within the electronic music scene are standing in solidarity with Ukraine, advocating for peace over war. Here, we’ve gathered up some information about what’s going down in Ukraine, as well as statements of solidarity from those within the electronic music community.
Earlier this morning, Ukraine was invaded as Russian president Vladimir Putin issued strike orders on multiple military bases and several major cities across the country, including the capital city, Kyiv. As Ukrainian fatalities stack up, some people choose to escape the country via car or train while they still can. Others chose to stay put in hopes that they can remain safe amidst the chaos blowing through their homeland- fleeing to basements, metros, and bomb shelters to seek refuge in.
Yesterday before the invasion commenced, Ukraine declared an official 30 day state of emergency, as well as enacting martial law nation wide. This effectively imposes curfews, restriction of movement, the suspension of civil law, and bans any protests or strikes from taking place across the country. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky urges citizens to stay calm and stay at home as schools shut down and the country closes its airspace to civilian flights.
As this heartbreaking information floods the internet and news channels across the globe, many members of the electronic music community are using their platform to declare solidarity with Ukraine, as well as preaching the timeless message of peace over war.
