In Lee Ann Robertsâ hands, even the hardest techno can have subtlety and soul. The Amsterdam-based, South African-born artist has become a prominent force in the global techno scene thanks to her fierce determination and vibrant creative touch. She leads with her own NowNow label â a self-reliant platform that nods to the South African colloquialism meaning “soon”, which means a call to surrender to the moment, and follow where the music takes you. Itâs a mantra sheâs lived by as her career has sharply risen â from debuting on Spanish label Suara with “Miyamoto” and instantly scoring number two on Beatportâs Hard Techno chart.
Sheâs simultaneously been growing NowNow with her own productions and dropping alongside remixes from verified legends like D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Jay Clarke, and Dense & Pika. The vitality in Robertsâ sound undoubtedly comes from her broad outlook, inspired as much by the revolutionary misfits of rock as the visionary pioneers of electronic music. Her attraction to unusual and distinctive qualities in the music she makes and plays all add up to one of the most exciting forces in contemporary techno.
Illegal Alien Records continues its trajectory of high-caliber techno releases, and this time has announced a new compilation due out in February 2023. The Deported Series: Ten features tracks from Coyu, Gotshell, Aöcram, Ricardo Garduno, and ILL COMMUNICATION among others. Quadrophonia is a Dutch/Belgian duo of rave artists who in the early 90s dominated dance floors across the world. In 1991, the duo released the self-titled track “Quadrophonia” which became one of their seminal pieces of music that played a role in inspiring the next generation of electronic music makers.
One such artist inspired by that track was UMEK, who today, is an iconic DJ and producer at the forefront of the worldâs techno scene; however, back then he was a youngster getting his first taste of electronic sounds. Fast forward three decades later, UMEK is about to celebrate his 30th-anniversary releasing music. He has also decided to remix the track that first inspired him, which is Quadrophoniaâs track “Quadrophonia”.
