Slingshot Festival: The Event That North Carolina Needed
The East Coast is being introduced to another festival on the rise — Slingshot Festival. The event made headway for 5 days in May (May 8, 13-15) in Downtown Durham with quite a selection of DJs. If you’re a North Carolinian, or someone that lives on the East Coast with little to no electronic music events, then Slingshot probably caught your radar. With Slingshot also returning in October 2022, East Coast ravers in North Carolina will have something to look forward to as it stands as one of the few events that take the electronic music scene with serious dedication.
As it stands, the event is no doubt something that is much needed within the southern community of N.C. — diversity, inclusivity, change, and electronic cultural appreciation; this all makes Slingshot an unforgettable event that will catch the East Coast by storm.
I attended Slingshot the weekend of May 13th and it was my first time raver experience. As a North Carolinian myself, I can honestly say that Slingshot is more than a festival for the south… it’s a cultural shift. Of course, I don’t want to paint a skewed picture of North Carolina as being non-progressive, that simply isn’t true. The RDU (Raleigh, Durham) area (and honestly the rest of the state) definitely has a deep culture of appreciating the arts (e.g., many movies have been filmed in Wilmington) — I myself, even graduated from a Liberal Arts College. But the fact remains that art/music culture within N.C. still has many conservative undertones, and to have a festival such as Slingshot come in with such strong inclusivity, diversity, and change is kind of rare. And to see that many of the locals were immeshed within Slingshot’s vibrancy is an even better view to see, as many North Carolinians such as myself have a desire to see more inclusive, artistic changes within the area and the state.
Spring Awakening Music Festival Halts Return for 2022
Spring Awakening Music Festival was hoping to celebrate its milestone 10-year anniversary this year, but as summer begins to turn the corner in Chicago, the beloved dance music event has announced that the festivities are on hold until 2023.
“We felt the festival was not at the level you’ve come to expect and deserve,” their statement read in part. “We are focusing all our energy on delivering a kick-ass lineup and new festival experiences for 2023.”
Goa Looking to Host Its Own EDM Festival in India
Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte said on Tuesday that the government was contemplating organizing an EDM festival in Goa, India. He also said that the government may not permit Sunburn to run in December if its dates clash with the Goa’s state festival.
“Sunburn has not been given permission nor has it approached the tourism department,” Khaunte said. “The Goa government is trying to have its own festival this year with a different flavor. If we are able to organize it in December at the same time as that of Sunburn, the latter may not find a space.” Read more
SOHMI’s Infinite Drive With Finding and Creating Music
SOHMI has quickly gained a reputation for her nuanced and emotive brand of DJing, which has pushed her into becoming the first Korean woman to be named a resident at LA’s premier underground house and techno club, Sound. All her years of musical training have prepared SOHMI to be the electronic force that she is today. Musically, SOHMI draws inspiration from R&B and UK pop/garage cuts of the ’90s and early 2000s by artists like Aaliyah, Cassie, and Craig David.
Catharsis Festival — México’s Three-Day Experience Event
Catharsis is a three-day festival event (May 27-29) that takes place in Cuatro Cuatros, Ensenada, Baja California, México. The festival brings together artists in a curated lineup of atmospheric electronic music and is an ideal festival to experience the natural environment of México’s valley wine region. All the attendees will have a chance to take on an earthly journey with an array of music, venues, art, food, and of course, wine.
ARC Music Festival Announces 2022 Lineup Additions
ARC is set to return to Chicago’s Union Park with an expanded three day event this September 2-4, which will include a world-class lineup of movement leaders from around the globe.
ARC also welcomes back the ARC Car Stage powered by The GoodBus — a full length school bus that has been converted into a fully-functional mobile sound stage with a 10,000 watt speaker system.
Slingshot is a Growing Part of The Worldwide Narrative in Music
Slingshot, the international nexus for music, electronic art, and technology in the South, has moved from Athens, GA to the up-and-coming music hotbed of Durham, NC, with two events slated for 2022: May 8, 13 and 14, and October 7-9. Dozens of artists and collectives will convene to showcase their work in a setting that has become a signature of creativity in the South. Over the years, Slingshot has hosted dozens of notables such as James Murphy, Jamie XX, Holly Herndon, and dozens of sound and visual artists from many corners of the globe. 6AM talks to the Slingshot family about what to expect from the festival and its new location.
