6AM and Synthetik Minds Unveil Four 2023 WORK Residents: David Castellani, EAS, EMILIANA and Etari

6AM and Synthetik Minds unveil four 2023 residents for their collaboration warehouse event series WORK!

2022 was quite the year, wasn’t it? Amongst all the things that we were able to do, with your love and support, was the launch of the first-ever WORK residency.

In December last year we announced the launch of our residency program, enabling us to provide a platform for a roster of incredibly talented Los Angeles-area based acts to flex their muscles and show the city, and the world, just how good LA’s techno scene really is.

It was our honor and pleasure to invite Annika Wolfe, Selective Response, Trovarsi, Secus, Stephen Disario and JIA as our first residents, and to see them in action behind the decks at WORK and/or RE/FORM.

I want to thank each and every single one of these fantastic artists for the incredible work they put in on their artistry this year, and for their contribution to our community

As we close chapter on 2022 and ready to write in the pages of a new one for 2023, we are incredibly excited to invite four new talented artists to the WORK family as official 2023 residents:

Get Out of Your F*cking Head: Tough Love on Mental Health

Earlier this month I picked up a book by the famous R&B rapper, Russ, titled “Get out of your way – it’s all in your head” – I decided to remix his book title as the title of this post to draw your attention on this matter. In the United States, May is mental health awareness month and at the tail of this month, I need to stress that this awareness needs to be addressed as often as possible (not just one month) in the culture we live in today, especially with this current climate.

Balancing WORK & RAVE: Nightlife Realities

Working to attend raves, festivals, and concerts has become the norm in today’s society. From people taking up volunteer shifts at festivals to gain access as well as picking up second shifts or working longer hours to earn extra income to pay for expenses related to partying and going to raves. The duality of lifestyles we live between our work life and rave life can often interfere with one another if things are not balanced out. If electronic music culture is within your heart and soul, then over-working especially on something you’re not passionate about is a sure way to burn you out- if you don’t balance it with what you enjoy most.  The need to make a living and thrive in one’s career is equally as important as letting loose on the dancefloor for hours to alleviate the everyday stress, but when does all this become too much?

Hi Stephen, welcome back. You’re part of the newly launched WORK Residency Program and as part of it, you’ll be playing at selected events throughout the year. What does it mean to you to be invited to be a part of it and recognized as a standout talent?

It is truly an honor to be a part of the WORK residency, alongside like minded peers in this industry. I have worked with the crew since 2018 and it has been such an amazing journey for us all. So much has changed since then, but our passion for this scene stays the same. I couldn’t be happier to officially be on board with the WORK team. Everyone is very professional, easy going and we all check our ego at the door, which I think plays a vital part in creating such a pure and genuine vibe for our events.

Why do you think the WORK Residency program is an important initiative?

The WORK residency is a great opportunity for Los Angeles and surrounding based artists to get a bit of recognition in our city. With so many local artists it really helps shed light on the producers and DJ’s doing something special in our hometown.

Living in these cement walls we call Los Angeles, it is essential to get away and connect back with Mother Earth and remember the planet we are actually living on.

Nature inspires Stephen Disario’s creative flow

Is there a specific moment that made you realize you wanted to pursue music more than just a hobby?

The spark for me was NYE of 2014; Some friends and I decided to throw a desert rave in the Mojave Desert. Hundreds of people showed up despite the little promo we did. The energy was electric! The feedback after the event was absolutely mind blowing. At that moment, I knew that this was something I wanted to pursue professionally with my entire heart and soul.

Are there any artists who’ve really inspired your work as an artist?

There are so many artists that I take influence from, and it’s constantly evolving. In the early days I was in love with artists like Recondite, Rþdhad, Maceo Plex, Noir, and others within that realm of deeper techno back in the day. As I got deeper in the rabbit hole, I met Brennen Grey who has been a huge staple in my journey. He truly helped me navigate the industry as well as in the studio. I am extremely blessed to call him my brother! From there, I started to develop my own sound and these days I am inspired by many artists; I am lucky to call friends like Marcal, Vinicius Honorio, Arthur Robert, Rene Wise, and many others. I am always discovering new artists and that is probably my favorite thing about music. There’s an endless world of inspiration out there!

Name a track you’ve had on repeat recently.

Arthur Robert “Kinship”. This track brings out so many emotions. Arthur is a very refreshing take on techno and really locks the listener in on a journey from start to finish.

You’ve said that going out in nature is inspiring to you. Do you have any dream nature escapes or ones planned for the future?

I am always plotting new places to explore. Living in these cement walls we call Los Angeles, it is essential to get away and connect back with Mother Earth and remember the planet we are actually living on. It’s easy to get consumed by the fast pace of life out here, and in that regard it is extremely important to hit the reset button from time to time. Yellowstone is on the top of that list currently, I also really want to explore South America and the Amazon.

I am my own biggest critic and with that comes a double edge sword. The solution: don’t stop and continue working. It’s all a matter of being consciously in tune with yourself and knowing that this is a part of the journey. It’s all about the passion of creating music, and if more opportunities come out of that then that is wonderful, but I think a great piece of advice is to create without expectation.

Stephen Disario balances work with play

What has been the most challenging aspect of your career, and how have you managed or overcome this challenge?

Covid-19 was the most challenging time for me, as I had my biggest releases to date during the pandemic, which was bittersweet. It was amazing to get some recognition in times of doubt, although I didn’t get the gig opportunities that may have come with those releases, had it been pre-Covid. The pandemic has completely reshaped me as an artist and revamped my sound. I had a handful of burnout moments with extreme self doubt, but continued to work through it.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Thank you so much for the opportunity, I am forever grateful for the love and support by the WORK team and community. This collective is one of the most special ones coming out of LA and I could not be more grateful to be a part of it. Cheers to the amazing future ahead! Also there will be new music soon and even bigger news to come toward the end of the year so keep your eyes peeled!

Hi Trovarsi! How did you become interested in the world of electronic music, particularly analog and modular synthesizers?

I started getting involved in music at a very young age, so it has always been always a major part of my life. My first instrument was the violin and then my focus shifted to playing the piano. I first heard dance music in the early 90’s and I was hooked! I grew up in the midwest, and Chicago was a short drive away, so I would drive down to pick up records and go out to the clubs and raves. I also worked at a record shop near the UW Madison campus. I was always following what was being released in all genres and I explored all types of music. Skipping ahead to when I got older, I started producing house and techno.  I love being able to play and perform with instruments. That raw sound, tactile feel, and connection with the machines and instruments and music made it an easy transition to hardware synths, drum machines and eurorack modular.

Our motto is: “Shifting the paradigm in electronic music from what is expected, to being accepted!”

Trovarsi, founder of the So Cal Synth Society, speaks about shifting the paradigm in electronic music to be more inclusive of women and non-binary folks

We love your initiative, Frequency Shift. Can you share more about your streaming festival?

I am immensely proud to be a founder of the So Cal Synth Society and the Frequency Shift Festival. It began with the goal of shifting the paradigm in electronic music away from a male dominated industry, to be more inclusive of women and non-binary people. We have connected with hundreds of female/non-binary musicians around the world. Through SoCal Synth Society’s platform, we are able to curate shows and events which feature these amazing artists. Through this community they have connected and built new relationships, supporting each other, and creating new projects. Our motto is: “Shifting the paradigm in electronic music from what is expected, to being accepted!”

You’re part of the newly launched WORK Residency Program and as part of it, you’ll be playing at selected events throughout the year. What does it mean to you to be invited to be a part of it and recognized as a standout talent?

I think it’s an honor and great opportunity to play in a scene I really connect with and love. It takes a lot of hard work and continuous dedication. I value all opportunities to share my music and I appreciate that people want to hear it and dance! Nothing beats connecting with others through the love of sound and working it out on the dancefloor.

It’s nice to see a local promoter focus on local talent because it gives us an opportunity to support and build up our community in Los Angeles. Sometimes, all someone needs is a chance to showcase their talent.

Trovarsi on why WORK Residency program is important for Los Angeles’s community

Why do you think the WORK Residency program is an important initiative?

I think it’s important because this is fun as hell BUT it is not easy! There are a lot of people out there putting everything they’ve got into their music and often they go unheard. There is so much amazing talent out there. Most clubs and events focus on the big names, the ones that sell tickets, but everyone has to start somewhere. It’s nice to see a local promoter focus on local talent because it gives us an opportunity to support and build up our community in Los Angeles. Sometimes, all someone needs is a chance to showcase their talent.

Are there any new projects or events on the horizon for you?

I am going on a five day journey through California deserts with three other producers in a solar powered RV! #modularcaliforniavibes We will be producing, mixing and mastering a joint EP during the trip. This event will be captured by a camera crew and released as a short documentary. I’m really looking forward to the collaboration and working in a studio on wheels! My other project, Transduction Signal Collective, is growing and we have some great shows coming up this year, The next one will be at the Analog Astronaut Conference at Biosphere 2, in Arizona. Check out our website for more details on upcoming performances.

Electronic Music Tracks To Help You Work And Study

Electronic Music Tracks To Help You Work And Study

A lot of scientific research projects have confirmed that the right kind of electronic music and the right tracks can help us be more productive, whether it’s when we study or are at work. This can include working on the computer, studying for more extended periods, or simply doing any kind of task in general.

Music can influence and activate different centers in our brain and set a positive mood which will help us with endurance, productivity and creativity. Moreover, music helps to distract from the everyday noise and create a separate universe where one can focus on their work or assignments. This is important for students to know and take advantage of as an efficient technique. The soon-to-be graduates, who combine work and study, though, might have little time to catch thesis writing inspiration even with the help of music. They can use top-notch online thesis help to clear up their schedule and find time to relax and listen to favourite rhythms as music helps to get rid of all the stress and fatigue.
