In the wake of the popularity of the #MeToo movement, there has never been a greater awareness for women’s rights than now. As a result, the call for greater representation and opportunities for women is louder than ever, and while there is still a long way to go, this definitely the case in the electronic music industry.

Recently, however, the one of the leading ladies of house and techno, Nina Kraviz, offered a different viewpoint.

The making of a stellar lineup is combining the old with the new, the heavyweights with the young talents: a skill that the team at DGTL has mastered and will show on their first day when Nina Kraviz and Modeselektor are joined in the first area by Âme, Jon Hopkins and De School’s Oceanic. The second area will be the domain of residents Ryan Elliott, De Sluwe Vos and Fort Romeau.

Why Kappa FuturFestival Is Worth Making the Trip For

Full disclosure: my first Kappa FuturFestival in 2012 didn’t take much traveling, but was nevertheless more than worth the trip. I lived in Milan then and reaching the nearby Northern Italian city of Turin (Torino) took less than two hours by train. By then the festival had undergone two editions and had changed format to become the first 10o% daytime festival in Italy, ranking as one of the top 5 electronic music festivals to attend in Europe.

I was surprised when I arrived at the venue of Parco Dora to be surrounded by tens of thousands who had come from not only just all over Italy, but also the rest of Europe. In a continent where you can find huge underground dance music events in every single corner, from the island of Malta that sits between Sicily and Northern Africa to quarries in Estonia and everything in between, it is sometimes a little difficult to understand how much Europeans travel in search of great music. Once you see it though, finding yourself surrounded by thousands speaking a myriad of different languages, you realize just how powerful the music is and how much draw certain festivals have.

Kappa FuturFestival is one of those events that attracts visitors from all over Europe. More recently though, it’s iconic location, seen in photos and videos that have been shared by the millions on social media, and quality-heavy lineups have been enticing crowds beyond the continent to make the trip to Torino to attend.

Earlier in the month festival organizers had announced that Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Sasha & Digweed, Sven Vath and Tale of Us would all be playing the 2017 edition, all now receiving some star-studded company with the Phase 2 lineup announcement that came this week. Attendees at the futuristic Parco Dora will be basking in the sun come July 8th and 9th, enjoying sets by the likes of Seth Troxer b2b The Martinez Brothers, Nina Kraviz, Paul Kalkbrenner and the legendary Fatboy Slim.

More names will be added, of course, making music one of the focal points of this edition like all others in the past. The beauty of a trip to Kappa FuturFestival is the two-in-one deal you’re offered by the simple nature of its location. Turin is a majestic Italian city of industrial workers, the home town of automobile giants Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Rome, and also a city full of history and beauty. The city sits on the bank of the Po, Italy’s longest river, and under the watchful eye of the iconic Mole Antonelliana and the soaring Italian Alps, and is surrounded by some of Italy’s most significant and revered wineries.

A visit to FuturFestival means being able to choose from a variety of other travel options in Turin and beyond, beginning with the nearby alps, the nearby French Riviera or perhaps some of Italy’s northern lakes including the famous Lake Como. The cities of Milan, Genoa and Florence are also nearby and easily accessible by train, as are other locations in France and Switzerland.

Alongside you at FuturFestival there will be 40, 000 other techno lovers as well as the usual world class audio systems, high quality production and a real attention to detail including tickets through smartphones and Cashless payment technology on site. Always environmentally aware and with focus on sustainability, Kappa FuturFestival proves once again why it is one of the most heralded techno festivals in the world.

Who Not To Miss

Sven Väth – April 13
The German mastermind that is Papa Sven has been a long-time friend of and performer at Awakenings. Thanks to his signature vinyl-only performances, upbeat techno tracks and funky synths, he’s sure to keep the crowd dancing throughout his entire set.

Ben Klock b2b Marcel Dettmann – April 14
These two gentlemen have been at the top of techno lists around the world and rightfully so. Their dynamic b2b sets ooze characteristic Berghain pounding techno with thrilling twists and turns throughout, making them our standout back-to-back choice for Awakenings’ 20 Year Anniversary celebration.

Jeff Mills – April 15 (Day)
A space wizard with endless talents, Jeff Mills is one of the most well-seasoned techno producers and DJs to roam this earth. His sets are known to incorporate cosmic synths and spacial sounds, providing timeless and out-of-this-world techno inspired emotions.

Dave Clarke – April 15 (Night)
Another Awakenings and veteran techno producer, Dave Clarke will bring the heat with heavy drums and a signature old school sound that blends techno and electro with effortless precision. The Amsterdam-based UK producer debuted with his first release in 1990 and yet remains at the forefront of today’s underground with good reason: his penchant for quality music above all else.

Ricardo Villalobos – April 16
Unnecessarily talented, Ricardo Villalobos is known to be the king of eclectic mixes, from spiraling sounds with deep bass to spirit-liberating techno. Nina Kraviz Brings ТРИП to North America for a Series of Dates at Unique Locations

ТРИП, Nina Kaviz’s imprint that translates to “trip,” has announced a special North American tour with events to be held at a string of unique locations chosen by the Russian producer herself.

Although exact details are still unknown, the label has stated that the events will be held at locations that will reflect the very culture of the city hosting them. For example, in Miami the event will be held at an open-air location, while in Mexico ТРИП will host its party at a fortress. In Los Angeles, Kraviz and her team will play at an unused movie studio, an homage to both the city’s rich history in movie business as well as its deep underground warehouse party culture.

The tour will last from October 27 to November 6, with Nina set to be joined by label-mate Bjarki and other special guests yet to be announced. The stop in Toronto for Coda’s 10 Year Anniversary – Nina’s first appearance in Canada in the past 3 years – is the only one on the tour that will be played inside an actual club.

Nina and her team are no strangers to holding parties at unique locations, famously throwing cave raves in Iceland in the past. The upcoming North American tour promises to take party-goers on a “very different, exciting and pleasurable трип.”

Music Monday: Listen to the 12hr fabric Takeover of Rinse FM ft. Ricardo Villalobos, Marcel Dettmann, Nina Kraviz & More

Rinse

Start your week proper with an entire 12 hours of top-tier underground house and techno from some of the biggest names in the international touring circuit.

This past Saturday, 3rd of September, fabric London took over Rinse FM for 12 hours as part of the current #savefabric initiative to save the club from closure. The venue is facing an official review of its license by the local Islington Council and Metropolitan Police as a result of two overdose deaths that prompted local officials to close the club indefinitely pending the aforementioned incoming review. Recently, London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has weighed in with an official statement replying to the #savefabric petition that has been doing the rounds to urge him to intervene in ensuring the club isn’t permanently shut down.
