Hollywood & Rave Culture: It’s Not All Drugs, Sex, Rocks & Rolls

As dance music, its festivals, and rave culture grow in popularity, the accurate depiction of “the scene” has become more necessary than ever. There are a plethora of “rave movies,” but the ones that become “mainstream” get it absolutely wrong. They’re completely reductive to dance music culture and its members. This poor depiction of rave culture riddled with drugs and then some brings major problems to those interested in the dance music scene, to those already in it, and to those who can influence how society both culturally and legally approaches the scene.

DJsounds Celebrate Kappa FuturFestival in Torino With New Short Film

Kappa FuturFestival is Italy’s biggest and best house and techno festival, and a new film by DJsounds shows just why. In it, the global video web channel DJsounds.com—which is now 10 years old—really captures how the huge event has evolved and grown over the years.

Starting over a decade ago, DJsounds.com is a global video web channel, producing feature interviews and event footage from around the globe, dedicated to the electronic music industry.  Established when online video of club culture was in its infancy, DJsounds has matured over 1,200 clips celebrating artists, parties and festivals across the globe. Now in 2017 – an age where every festival, club and artist create their own videos – rather than compete, we are also using our unique, impartial position to explore, investigate and uncover intriguing and fascinating facets of electronic music culture via longer length documentaries.

The film touches on the origins of the festival, the landmark performances and features interviews with the likes of Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Kölsch and Joseph Capriati. Festival director Maurizio Vitali also appears throughout and walks us through the huge industrial hangar that is the main arena for the festival, which was once an iron forgery

“There’s a freedom, it feels open here, you aren’t caged in anywhere,” says Carl Cox in the film, summing up the attitude of the crowd. “It’s been a lifestyle for many years, this music, the coming together of people from all over the country. But the locals wanted something with more substance, they wanted to look up to their heroes.”

Joseph Capriati adds, “Italians they give you their all, they are the most loyal supporters in the world.”

The film is a history lesson that offers some great scenes from this year’s event and taps into the Italian passion for house and techno, offering a great insight at just how special this festival is and what makes it so unique.

Seth Rogan and The Lonely Island Announce Movie About Festival That Goes “Horrible Wrong”

Life is full coincidences, we know, but none could have been sweeter for Seth Roger and The Lonely Island.

The famous Hollywood actor took to his Twitter this past Friday to announce his forthcoming movie about a festival that goes “horribly wrong,” perfect timing considering the media frenzy surrounding the incredible fail of Fyre Festival in the Bahamas over this past weekend. The world’s social media networks, blogs and even mainstream news all covered what was possibly the biggest  music festival failure and cultural meltdown in recent history, with celebrities and other non-industry heavyweights weighing in with their thoughts, opinions and troll/jokes on social media.

This was followed by Fyre Festival co-founder Billy MacFarland coming on record with an apology, describing it as the “worst day of his life.” Ja Rule, the other founder of Fyre Festival, stuck with a short uninspired Twitter “apology” and nothing less.

A Film About the Legendary Paradise Garage is in Production

Paradise Garage Larry Levan

That’s right, a movie about the iconic New York City venue is currently in production.

Directed by Jonathan Ullman, the film will explore the history of Paradise Garage while focusing on the complicated relationship between the venue owner Michael Brody and club resident Larry Levan. Opened for ten years between 1977 and 1987, Paradise Garage is directly responsible for the foundations of dance music and its culture, allowing the early pioneers that graced its decks to innovate and push the boundaries of disco and house.

Appropriately titled Paradise Garage, the film will highlight the venue’s role as a sanctuary for its members, and especially so those of the LGBT community.

“Throughout his life Larry travelled a road that no one had taken before,” says director Jonathan Ullman “Never afraid to take chances, it was his fearlessness as a DJ and remixer that has endeared him to generations of fans around the world, including myself.”  Ullman has done other work related to Paradise Garage before, namely a mini-documentary released in 2014 which you can watch below.

British actor Kobna Holdbrook-Smith will portray Paradise Garage’s Larry Levan.
