The Swiss (who else?) have just designed and produced the first-ever inflatable nightclub. Called Shelter, the unique venue was built by Swiss studio Bureau A to host a function for the Federation of Swiss Architects that takes place annually.
Shelter is built completely out of PVC membrane and comes decked out with a bar, DJ booth, seating, tables and of course a dance floor. The entire venue can be deflated and transported to a new location easily.
Bureau A described the venue’s purpose in ambiguous terms: “For one night, the black hole of a neat and organized society is revealed as a potential for distortion, a potential of let-go and provoke, with a slight smile, the unsaid and the sweat”. ”
The “mysterious black vessel in a highly engendered concrete vault” was inflated and setup inside a cultural venue in Geneva named Pavillon Sicli. The project’s architects Leopold Banchini and Daniel Zamarbide say they drew inspiration for Shelter from the architecture of underground settings.
“Architecture seeks the underground, searches for new territories under the skin of the earth,” they said. “The underground fascinates and completes the hygienic and panoptical world of the overground.”
