Weska is back with a Third Wave and itâs a monster comprised of three original cuts.
After years building a career and getting music signed to everyone from Drumcode, Suara and Tronic, travelling the globe with gigs in Australia, Canada and all over Europe, and appearing as part of the mighty Drumcode showcases, itâs safe to say Weska is right on the cusp of his career.
When Weska (Cody Hull) was just 20 when he remembers walking through the bitter Canadian cold, dissecting every percussive detail of âNew Groundâ, Bart Skilsâ low-end groover that dropped on Drumcode in 2012. Seven years later, the young Toronto-born artist is celebrating a debut EP on Adam Beyerâs fabled label. And to close a circle, itâs a collaborative work with Dutch journeyman Bart Skils, no less.
While the Polarize EP marks Weskaâs first time on a Drumcode cover slick (followers will note he dropped âOther Placesâ on last yearâs A-Sides compilation), Skils has almost ten DC releases to his name and a deep connection with Beyer going back to the early 2000s when the pair would play Awakenings events alongside one another.
With almost 20 years separating the artists and vastly different backgrounds, they reflected on their respective career journeys in a conversation piece for 6AM.
Following up his top 5 single “Voyage” released on Kraftek at the end of last year, Berlin-based Canadian producer Weska is back with a free, two-track stomper just in time for the summer season.
The title track “Playground” is a bass heavy club cut that sways upwards and downwards, in and out of a warped vibe. The EP’s counterpart, “Crimson Tide”, is a slightly groovier affair where energetic percussion plays off an array of euphoric pads and sonic laser beams. Adam Beyer has been championing this track for months, and itâs about time that it was released to the masses!
Together, the two form a versatile and captivating EP that attests to Weskaâs dynamic sound.
2017 has been more than kind for Weska. The Canadian-born producer, who now lives in Berlin, has been busy in the studio pushing the kind of dynamic techno that has gotten him attention from labels the likes of Octopus Recordings, Suara, Kraftek and Tronic, all the while securing a residency with Eric Prydz at HĂŻ Ibiza as well as playing Creamfields UK this past summer.
Despite being just 25 years old, Weska has gone on to impress industry heavyweights such as Adam Beyer, Eric Prydz and Christian Smith, a testament to his quality both in the studio and in front of an audience.
With this amazing year coming to an end and releases on Tronic and Odd Recordings added to his resume, 6AM took the time to dig deeper with Weska about his life in Berlin, genre pigeon-holing, his relationship with Prydz and more.
The fast-rising Canadian DJ and producer Weska releases his four-track EP Say To Me through Octopus Recordings today. Say To Me delivers heavy hitting beats and gliding chords â the style of warehouse-friendly techno that has made Octopus Recordings one of the most respected label in its genre throughout the world.
As a testament to the power of this latest release, Weska has received support from the likes of Sasha who labeled it as “big stuff,” James Zabiela who commented saying, “Say To Me is massive. Pushover is probably my favorite here though,” as well as Monika Kruse and Karotte who both gave their full thumbs up.
Weska, known to family and friends as Cody Hull, rose from the Toronto underground and has become an international touring player with support from the likes of Nicole Moudaber, Marco Carola, Adam Beyer, Pan-Pot, Eric Prydz and Dosem. His tooled-up studio is to blame for his hybrid-style of productions, enabling Weska to remain at the forefront of the ever-changing electronic soundscape as a producer.

Canadian techno producer WESKA is making his return to Sian’s famed Octopus Recording imprint with a four track EP entitled Despierta. Set to be released on February 1st, the latest project from the Toronto native encompasses dark bass lines and sultry sounds for a selection of dance-floor-ready tracks.
“I’m happy with the way the “Despierta” EP came out. Every track offers a slightly different perspective on a single idea. I was thinking about how someone would feel if they were sitting in the middle of a storm, watching it develop around them, waiting for it to erupt. That feeling of an impending darkness, but one that you welcome rather than fear – that’s what I was going for.” – WESKAÂ
The perfect example comes with “Despierta”, an eight-minute-thirteen-second track filled with undulating basslines and echoing vocals throughout. The build-up increases, as powerful percussions give way to a techno crescendo right past minute five. The EP’s second track “Third Eye” is a must-have for any DJ of this genre. It hits hard after a melodic journey of pulsating techno, with a drop set to have the staunchest of techno fans dancing.
With “The Alley of Lars”, WESKA has given us a track better suited for the after-hours. Deep and sultry, it emanates from a dark corner with the perfect groove for warehouse setting as sunrise sets in. Last, but not least, the EP’s bonus track “Friction” is filled with chord progressions and the type of strong bass line that stirs up emotions.
