Q&A and Premiere: One Child Policy Discusses His Debut EP on VRV, His Asian-American Heritage and Favorite LA Food Spots

Out on Los Angeles basedĀ VRV,Ā One Child Policyā€˜s debut introduces the electronic music world to a new and distinct sound. Featuring a yin and yang selection of tracks,Ā Cultural TransmissionsĀ (order here)Ā contains productions that are both club-ready and cerebral in nature, kinetic and moving while simultaneously exercising the mind into new dimensions.

One Child Policy (1CP) is a project born out of the LA’s colorful San Gabriel Valley Chinese area, a fusion of sorts that sees the amalgamation of electronica with a background of classical music, electrical engineering and sound design. The results are peculiar, in a most positive way, with distorted vocals, mind-bending synth leads, gritty yet warm percussions and an overall atmospheric aura that carries through all his tracks.

We had a chat with the man behind the project to talk about his roots, favorite Los Angeles food spots and the journey that took him here: the release of his debut on one of LA’s most recognized labels, from which we are premiering the track “Chase The Dragon.”

One Child Policy Showcases Kinetic and Thought Provoking Soundscapes in “Cultural Transmissions” Debut EP

Out on Los Angeles based VRV, One Child Policy‘s debut introduces the electronic music world to a new and distinct sound. Featuring a yin and yang selection of tracks,Ā Cultural TransmissionsĀ (available for pre-order here)Ā contains productions that are both club-ready and cerebral in nature, kinetic and moving while simultaneously exercising the mind into new dimensions.

The exploration of his own Asian-American heritage sees 1CP deliver musical content that is both ethereal and thought-provoking, all the while accessible to those looking to get lost in one of Los Angeles’ iconic and raw warehouse parties.

The EP is layered with interesting sounds and proves to be an homage to the producer’s roots. It opens up with the booming “Yin,” a track characterized by a recurring arpeggio, and picks up the energy with ā€œRed Coast Base Surveillance,ā€ featuring lo-fi pads bleeding over a menacing bass line. With ā€œOnly Meā€ we see 1CP dive into the dichotomy of a Chinese American upholding filial piety (孝) towards his family, addressed by the call and response of the voices in the track, the apparent moody pads and heady TB-303 atmospheres. Showcasing his eclectic taste, ā€œChasing the Dragonā€ blurs the genre lines in more ways than one, bringing disco samples to a techno landscape, the result a nod to UK garage that will surely get people dancing.Ā  Closing out the EP is the title track, once again using the power of contrast to brilliant results. 1CP tunes and processes the sound of Chinese fireworks to produce sonic outputs that are then laid over silky vocals and mesmerizing pads.

Lean Trax Volume 1. Tests The Boundaries of Techno and Hip-Hop By Creating Dance Floor Urban Techno

Re-imagining. Blending. Testing. Innovating. VRV‘s latest outing does all that, and more, Ā with its latest tape release.

Continuing to push the boundaries of diversity, the Los Angeles techno label veers off into somewhat uncharted territory thanks to a five-track release available for free listening and downloading via the label’s Bandcamp page and soon to be available via tape also.

Lean Trax is the alter-ego of a well-known techno act from the urban techno warehouse scene that has put Los Angeles on the map for well over a decade. Volume 1Ā fulfills the artist’s need for urban techno edits ready for the dance floor, keeping techno as a root genre and blending with itĀ the adverse energy of hip-hop to produce enthralling and captivating results that have so far been mostly unexplored.

While Lean Trax isn’t the first act to look at both techno and hip-hop as interesting ingredients for a new musical concoction, see Sian’s latest album or Heroes x Villains for example, Volume 1 takes some of hip-hop and rap’s most known tracks and reimagines them their swagger and bravado within a techno context, all songs manipulated and assembled by Lean Trax but containing elements of their originals.

From “Percocet” to “Jumpman” and from “Drippin” to “Not Nice, without forgetting “Like Dat,” Lean Trax’s Volume 1 is a release that provides new weapons for any techno DJ’s arsenal, allowing for artists to go in directions they couldn’t before.
