Pioneer Announced New $350 PLX-500 Turntable With Built-In USB

Pioneer Dj 1

Looking for a new turntable? Pioneer DJ has just come out with the announcement of the brand-new PLX-500, aimed for use by both DJs and casual listeners who collect records.

Available in two colors (black and white), the PLX-500 comes as a follow-up to the recent Rekordbox features that allow for recording and organization of vinyl. The beauty of this new turntable is the killer USB port and soundcard, allowing DJs to digitize vinyl with ease or to use it as a DVS player for Rekordbox DJ.

Pioneer’s latest hardware also comes with a cartridge, stylus, slipmat and, according to the company, is still suitable for scratch DJs despite a slightly reduced pitch range and lower torque.

You will be able to buy the turntable in early September, for a retail price of $359, a definite more budget-friendly alternative to those who cannot fork out ÂŁ2,799 for the recently announced updated Technics SL-1200. You can find a more detailed in-depth comparison to other turntables on the market here.

Jack White Plays First Vinyl Record In Space

jack-white

On July 30th, Jack White completed the mission of playing the very first record in space. “A Glorious Dawn” by composer John Boswell, mixed with audio of Carl Sagan describing the universe, was played and peaked at 94,413 feet above Earth.

With a specially designed turntable, the Icarus Craft, that took three years to engineer by close friend and electronics consultant to Third Man Records, Kevin Carrico, and a gold plated vinyl record to maintain its groove and operate in airless conditions with direct sunlight, played for approximately 80 minutes before the high altitude balloon carrying the mechanism burst and projected back to its launch station in Marsing, Idaho.

“As you rise higher and higher into the thinning atmosphere, temperature and increasing vacuum (lack of air) can cause issues,” Carrico explained. “Vinyl has a rather low melting point (160F) and without air to keep things cool, you could wind up with a lump of melted plastic on your hands if a record is exposed to the sun for too long.”

White, the Third Man Records founder, when discussing the achievement said, “Our main goal from inception to completion of this project was to inject imagination and inspiration into the daily discourse of music and vinyl lovers. Combining our creative impulses with those of discovery and science is our passion, and even on the scale that we are working with here, it was exhilarating to decide to do something that hasn’t been done before and to work towards its completion. And, it brings us great fulfillment to pay tribute to the incredible scientist and dreamer that Carl Sagan was. We hope that in meeting our goal we inspire others to dream big and start their own missions, whatever they may be.“

Third Man Records wrote in a statement: “We could not be happier to check this longtime goal off its bucket list.”

The resurgence in popularity of vinyl records and turntables has been translating into the opportunity of advancing and creating new technology to enhance the use of this music medium.

Return Of The Technics: SL-1200G

Technics-Logo_1024x1024

The Technics SL-1200 (discontinued) is the undisputed heavyweight turntable champion, cherished and sought after by vinyl DJs of all ages and genres. For the 50th anniversary of Technics, the company (a subsidiary of Panasonic) will be releasing a pair of “Grand Class” models, engineered with the audiophile in mind: the SL-1200G, which features an aluminum exterior, and the limited anniversary edition SL-1200GAE, housed in a gorgeous magnesium casing. Unfortunately, Technics will only be producing the latter model in a one-time run of 1,200. (See what they did there?)

technics new

In addition to beautiful exterior casing, these new, turntables include a three-layered turntable and high-dampening tonearm, two features that audiophiles old and young will get especially excited about. They even added a brand-new direct-drive system, controlled by microprocessor, to eliminate “cogging,” which they explain in-depth in their press release:

“Vinyl record sales have been booming lately, so it’s not at all surprising that Technics is capitalizing on the SL-1200’s mystique here — we’re actually expecting to see a few high-end turntables at CES 2016. No word on pricing, but expect these to be crazy expensive when the 1200GAE arrives in summer and the 1200G hits late in the year. (Also, 50 years’ worth of SL-1200s are also available on eBay and Craigslist in virtually every city in the world, if you’re that impatient.)”

Vinyl Revivalists, Discos Nutabe, Releases “Dijon Triathalon – Pandemia 12″ EP”

DNTB002_A

In the midst of the EDM culture take-over, leaving traditional vinyl mixing in the shadows, a unique Columbian record label keeps the art of vinyl grooves alive. “Today in Discos Nutabe, direct from the city of Medellin, to the east in the valley where the Nutabe fought and died, we fight for music and the format we love.” Discos Nutabe fosters the history and art of mixing on vinyl mediums by creating a coalition of artists that hold a deep appreciation for the classic feel of having to switch disc sides, readjusting the needle, and manipulating the RPM meticulously. This is a truly unique label to emerge during a musical era that is dominated by digital music production. They’re just lovers of house and dedicated to the medium.

As for the EP, it is a skillfully mixed three track album that beautifully showcases the seamless mixing of Camilo Naranjo and JosĂ© SantamarĂa. This EP, unlike their first release, DCM – Origenes 12″ EP, which was groovier and had lush house undertones, Dijon Triathalon is much more minimalistic. It features soft synth loops and are complimented by steady, traditional house beats. Vinyl is such a delicate and difficult medium to work with, so their exhibition of steadily mixing in and out the synths was incredibly impressive. Track B1 perfectly demonstrates their mixing abilities with synths slowly creeping in and suddenly taking over the entire track. My personal recommendation is Track B2, it’s less minimalism and a dash more groove/funk – I may have found myself awkwardly bobbing about.

Dijon Triathalon – Pandermia 12″ EP is out now on Discos Nutabe. Stay up to date with Discos Nutabe below.
