12 Open Air Venues You Need to Visit This Summer

If there’s one supreme thing to look forward to during the summer it’s open air parties. Warm weather and blue skies overhead as lush house grooves emit from the speakers – it’s a hard scenario to beat.

Throughout summer it’s not uncommon to see open-air pop up parties such as Richie Hawtin in Plaça de la Boqueria, tINI hosting beach events in Ibiza (until they get shut down by authorities), or Subtract and Sublevel taking over a golf course in Malibu. But pop-up parties aside, there’s established venues that will be grooving all summer.

Here are 12 open air venues that we have our sights on this summer.

Space Ibiza Set to Reopen in 2017 With Same Name But More Exclusivity

Carl Cox and Nic Fanciulli crown Pepe Rosello as the true king of Ibiza's nightlife during the last minutes of the club's Closing Fiesta 2016

Carl Cox and Nic Fanciulli crown Pepe Rosello as the true king of Ibiza’s nightlife during the last minutes of the club’s Closing Fiesta 2016

You would have been forgiven for thinking that 2016 marked the end of Space Ibiza as we knew it. Everything that we heard from Pepe Rosello, Space Ibiza’s former owner, Carl Cox and the Matutes family that own Ushuaïa Group and acquired the property seemed to point to a complete revamp and brand change. In fact in a specific interview Carl Cox, long-time resident at the club and personal friend of Rosello, indicated that the Rosello’s plan was to open a new club elsewhere on the island by 2018, thus keeping the dream alive of a Space Ibiza that still focused on music and less on the VIP lifestyle that is unfortunately permeating the island. Rumors even begun to surface of the exact location where this would be, the site now occupied by the Reco de Sol Hotel in San Antonio.

Yet, Periodico de Ibiza is now reporting that “businessman and former politician veteran Ibizan Abel Matutes Juan announced last night that the legendary Space Ibiza will keep its original nomenclature, while studying add a second name to link the venue to other franchises chain Such as Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Club or Hard Rock Ibiza.”

“It will surely open this year as Space. It is an accredited brand, which does not prevent us from adding a new name that links us with all the establishments we have,” said the former minister in the interview broadcast by local television Grupo Prensa Pitiusa. Moreover, Matutes went on to clarify that his company built Space Ibiza, explaining the long history that brought the club into Rosello’s hands, stating that “his business group built the discotheque located on the second line of Platja d’en Bossa and that after ‘five or six years’ of exploitation, and for his commitment to the hotel offer, decided to rent it to Pepe Rosello, who has run the premises since 1989.”

Matutes went on to confirm most of the rumors in circulation, stating that there are plans to convert the space into a more exclusive, luxurious club that cater to more “exclusive tourism.”

If you thought this was the last ever summer for Space Ibiza, think again.

Anyone who has been following the club’s recent news of the past year knows that Carl Cox, resident and personal friend of long-term owner Pepe Rosello, was the first to break the news that the Ushuaïa Group was purchasing the current location where Space resides

In his latest interview, however, he reveals the news countless have been waiting for: Space will reopen elsewhere in the island in the fairly near future.

Speaking to Ticketmaster, he stated, “Plans are on the table for it opening at another site but it won’t happen for at least two years and will it be the same? We don’t know. I don’t know whether I will be involved because there are so many variables.

Carl Cox and Tale Of Us to Headline Space Ibiza’s Final Closing Party

Carl Cox love space

The 2nd of October will mark the end of an era, the final closing party of Space Ibiza as we’ve come to know it before club owner Pepe Rosello hands over the keys to the Ushuaïa group at the end of the season, following 27 years at the helm of the world-renowned nightlife institution.

The transition has been somewhat telling, with Carl Cox revealing that 2016 would be the final year of his Music Is Revolution residency at Space and on the island altogether, and Richie Hawtin similarly announcing that ENTER. wouldn’t return past the 2015 season.

It is unclear exactly what will become of the venue once ownership changes, but we do now know that Carl Cox and Tale of Us will be headlining the final fiesta to close the 2016 season and the long magical run of what has become one of the top clubbing destinations of the entire world.

Many more artists will be announced in the coming weeks, for what is sure to be the hottest party on the island for 2016. Traditionally, Space’s Closing Fiesta is so large that a special outdoor stage is constructed in the massive parking lot adjacent to the club in order to accommodate both the massive lineup that is to be revealed soon, and the crowds that will come to pay their respects as the curtain drops on the legendary venue.

It’s Time To Start Saying Goodbye to Space Ibiza As We Know It

That Space Ibiza is about to undergo massive changes is not news. Last year it was announced that Pepe Roselló’s 27-year reign as owner of the club was ending following the 2016 summer season, after which the club’s lease will be taken over by Matutes Group, the owners of Ushuaïa across the street. Following the announcement, Richie Hawtin decided that ENTER.Ibiza would end its residency at the club, while Carl Cox made it abundantly clear that 2016 would be the last summer for Music Is Revolution on the island, citing Roselló’s departure as head of venue as one of the primary reasons for this change.

There has been a lot of speculation since on the exact future of the venue. We know that Roselló currently owns the world-famous Space Ibiza brand, and when asked about plans for the space in the coming years, the CEO of Palladium Hotel Group and VP of the Matutes Group, Abel Matutes Prats stated, “Why change when we don’t have to?”

He told told the Diario de Ibiza, “We want to take care and continue with the project to make Platja d’en Bossa an entertainment area.” He went on to categorically deny rumors that Space would be turned into a shopping center, specifying that the club’s current “class 41” license limits the venue’s uses to leisure and recreation. This means that it cannot be turned into a hotel or merchandise operation.

What did become clear from his interview, is that while exact plans aren’t decided yet, the club will be turned into an operation that mostly caters to the same audience Ushuaïa attracts. That is a more VIP-centric crowd than Space has been known for.

He specified, “Obviously we want to keep it as a club, but also want to dedicate it to the audience in which we are now focusing, which will be complementary to Ushuaïa.”

This year’s Ushuaïa residencies are predominantly EDM-focused, with only Ants on Saturdays dedicated to more underground sounds. The rest of the week sees David Guetta take over on Mondays, Hardwell on Tuesdays, Axwell and Ingrosso on Wednesdays, Steve Aoki and Oliver Heldens alternating on Thursdays, Tinie Tempah on Fridays and Armin van Buuren on Sundays.

It is unsure whether Tale Of Us’ new Afterlife residency, which starts this summer, will continue on once keys for the club change hands. This may truly be the last season to enjoy Space Ibiza as we have all known it, after which it may be time to say goodbye and prepare ourselves for the changes the owners of Ushuaïa will introduce.

Ushuaïa Ibiza Opening Party to Feature Richie Hawtin, Guy Gerber, Maya Jane Coles and More

Last Year's Ushuaïa Opening Party

Last Year’s Ushuaïa Opening Party

As we inch our way through winter, Ibiza is gearing up for a new season and announcements of opening parties and residency line-ups are starting to flair up.

Ushuaïa Ibiza, the island’s biggest outdoor party venue, has announced an Opening Party lineup that veers away from the EDM-centric names it often houses throughout the season by focusing purely on a roster of underground stars. While ENTER.Ibiza is no more, the brand’s head-honcho Richie Hawtin will be headlining the celebrations, accompanied by a supporting stars of excellence. In alphabetical order, he is joined by Andrea Oliva, the mind behind the Ants Colony concept, Rumor’s Guy Gerber, ENTER.Sake’s Hito, Hot Since 82, La Familia’s Joris Voorn, Los Suruba and last but not least Maya Jane Coles.

The party doors will open at 12pm on Saturday May 28th, with tickets ranging between 40,00 € for early entry and 60,00 € for regular ticket.

Although no information has been provided, the event flyer not only bears Hawtin’s M_nus logo but also the label’s signature colors and style. It will be interesting to see how things shift on the island this year, after news came out that Ushuaïa Ibiza is purchasing the iconic Space Ibiza across the street, a move that coincided with Carl Cox’s announcement to not return to the club in 2017 and Hawtin’s decision to not continue ENTER.Ibiza altogether.
