It’s time we be honest with each other: drugs won the U.S. War on Drugs.
While President Trump is inexplicably still contesting the election results, there isn’t even a shadow of a doubt on the fact that drugs are a sure winner of the 2020 elections.
The history of techno is undoubtedly one that traces back to the late 1980s and the black American artists in Detroit who pioneered the genre. It was in the Motor City that the sounds of techno began to take form, soon becoming the popular genre that we know today, exported all over the world.
All of this would not be possible if not for the pioneering efforts of artists that founded and produced techno in Detroit during those formative years. Detroit artists the likes of Juan Atkins, Eddie Fowlkes, Jeff Mills, Kevin Saunderson, Blake Baxter, Santonio Echols, and Will Thomas shaped the sound of techno as we know it, pretty much writing the manual for techno music.
With over two decades of experience under his belt, Ben Sims has a well-deserved reputation as one of the world’s most in-demand and leading techno DJs and producers – a tight, energetic mixer who skilfully weaves together his own distinctive blend of tough funk and hard grooves.
Sims doesn’t follow trends and is one of those now-rare DJs who takes his skills behind the decks as seriously as DJs used to in the ’80s and ’90s. Ask anyone who matters in the techno world and they will agree: Sims is a no-compromise artist who has constantly evolved while always remaining faithful to the underground sounds of techno. It comes as no surprise to anyone versed in the techno scene that Sims is also widely-known and appreciated for his three-deck wizardry and dexterity, as his now-viral Boiler Room at AVA Festival from earlier this year proves.
Led by its founder, DJ, and GRAMMY-nominated producer Mark Knight, Toolroom Stateside continues its club takeovers this November. After a summer that saw the authoritative dance music label make its triumphant return to Ibiza for seventeen successful weeks at Eden Ibiza, Toolroom heads back to the west coast at Exchange LA, celebrating its 9th anniversary, on Saturday, November 23. With earlier tour stops including sold-out New York and San Francisco takeovers, label head Mark Knight returns for his first LA appearance in nearly a year with Toolroomâs latest rising stars, as both DJ Mag favorites Leftwing : Kody and tastemaker Danny Howard join Mixmagâs “New Artist To Watch” Wheats to round up the lineup. A driving force of the underground sound, attendees can expect to hear its trademark sound on the road.
With an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, Mark Knight is one of dance musicâs most respected and accomplished artists. As one of Beatportâs highest selling artists overall and a fixture on the international club and festival circuit with appearances at The BPM Festival, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival, and much more, the Toolroom label head has been a guiding light in dance music. A heavyweight favorite amongst US dance music fans, Mark Knight brings UK duo Leftwing : Kody, whose track âI Feel Itâ became one of the summerâs biggest house records, and new rising talent Wheats. Newly relaunching his imprint Nothing Else Matters, and joining up for the LA stop of Toolroom Stateside, DJ/producer Danny Howard has been an influential figure on the BBC Radio 1 airwaves since 2011 and continues to be a highly regarded selector as a new addition to the stationâs Friday night lineup alongside Annie Mac and Pete Tong.
Recently celebrating the 500th episode of Toolroom Radio and its fifteen-year anniversary with a world tour in 2018, Toolroom has continued its dominance well into 2019. Boasting the title of Beatportâs âhighest selling label of 2018,â the label continues to be an influential outlet in dance music with recent releases including Kevin Knapp and Hannnah Wants chart-topping collaboration âCall Me,â Wheatsâ âBy Myselfâ and Mark Knightâs newest edit for C.O.Tâs âLet It Go.â With 2019 shaping up to be another landmark year, Toolroom continues to push its roster of leading dance music producers with names including Jack Back, Eli Brown, Friend Within, Illyus & Barrientos and much more.
Bringing an authentic dance music experience to Exchange for its 9th anniversary celebrations, attendees of the Los Angeles stop can look forward to hearing the current sound from one of the worldâs leading house and tech-house labels.
Ahead of the show, we asked Wheats to share six United States-inspired tracks with our readers
During the 1960âs, âHippiesâ and celebrities popularized the use of marijuana, LSD, and other drugs. “During the Civil War, troops used morphine, uppers dominated World War II, the Vietnam troops shot heroin”, and their addictions didn’t stop there, as the U.S.’ demand for drugs kept on growing.
The term âWar on Drugsâ was coined in the summer of 1971 after Ronald Reagan ordered law-enforcement officials to directly target drug consumers rather than producers or suppliers.
It’s likely that if you ever tell someone you’re taking a vacation to Detroit, you will be met with a mixture of concern and curiosity. While many don’t think of the Motor City as a leisure destination, Detroit holds a special place in America’s history and more so in the dance music world as the birthplace of techno and home of Movement Electronic Music Festival – a three-day affair complete with impressive line-ups attracting tens of thousands to the city’s Hart Plaza every Memorial Day Weekend. Don’t be mistaken in thinking of the city as unsafe or not worth visiting, however, for Detroit is rebuilding and remains a great party and visiting destination throughout the year thanks to its vibrant techno scene, iconic venues and wonderful arts scene.
Throughout this Detroit travel guide you will find everything you need from hotel and food recommendations, transportation tips, things to do away from the music, and of course, a party guide to techno in the Motor City.
