80s vs 90s fashion

Who Wore It Better: 80s or 90s Dance Party People?

Dance music as a genre that has evolved from the European electro-pop and American House music and Techno scene from the 70s-80s — typically, with a BPM range from 120 to 140+. Interestingly, the techno and dance music today we know today cannot be compared to the music years and years prior.

As far as change goes, we know that no matter the location, the techno music and general dance music scene has always been a relentless and powerful one from the DJs, producers, listeners
etc. Definitely, all aspects of the techno and dance music community have brought about an essence of “we’re here to stay” — and to add, one thing that can be said about the community is that fashion has stayed prevalent throughout the scene as well.

Machines, Plants, and Striking Sounds With Polytunnel

Hailing from Kilkenny, Ireland, and now based in Glasgow, Scotland, Polytunnel (aka Peter Lawlor) is a DJ/Producer who has gained acclaim from the likes of Mixmag, DJ Mag, Inverted Audio, XLR8R, as well as gaining support from the great Andrew Weatherall on his show NTS. From creating genre-free experimental sounds to running his labels Moot Tapes and Made Magnetic, Polytunnel has definitely earned his stripes by being recognized and supported by fellow icons Laurent Garnier, Dan Curtin, Vladimir Ivkovic, nd_Baumecker, Ryan Elliot, Marcel Dettmann, Âme, Truncate, Chris Ssg, and James Zabiela.

As of late, Polytunnel has been keeping his 2022 busy with his releases — one of which was released in May of 2022 titled Gold Seal by Solkatt; an experimental Irish electronic duo that he takes part in alongside Leo Pearson. Recently in October, Polytunnel individually released his Bioacoustics EP — an EP that was focused on the concept of plants and horticulture. Once again in October, Polytunnel is wasting no time releasing his next EP Outer Earth on his imprint Made Magnetic. Outer Earth will be releasing October 19th and 26th, 2022 — the 19th with a remix from Denham Audio, and the 26th with remixes from fellow DJs Lighght and Jellypelt.

Building the Beat With Hans Bouffmyhre

From playing his regular DJ sets at some of the most well-known clubs in the world such as Berghain, Melkweg, Rex Club, Sub Club, as well as releasing tracks on Soma Records, Electric Deluxe, Perc Trax, Suara, and others, Hans Bouffmyhre has become well known for his energetic style of hypnotic and raw energy. It’s no surprise that with his unique style of music, the label Consumed Music would be honored to feature him on remix duties in collaboration with fellow DJs Alpha Particle Assembly and shadoW Work on the single Artificial Mind.

With Hans’ remix, he brings a heavier industrial feel with distorted kicks, stomping drums, and escalating synths that are layered with distorted vocals that will put any listener on a hypnotic journey. Artificial Mind will have us question human evolution and technology, while also making for an epic dancefloor hitter.

Versus Blaze the British Scene With House and Rave Culture

U.K. duo Versus (aka Dave Skehan and Scott Walker) are blazing a trail through the British club scene and beyond as they have already clocked up releases on world-class labels such as Ultra, Repopulate Mars, Under No Illusion, SOLA, and Realm. Rooted in classic house and rave culture, Versus’ sounds are filled with tracks that range from hypnotic and warehouse.

As of recent, the duo has made their Marylebone Records debut with their single Ain’t No Stopping — a floor-filling, upfront house record with vocals from Ola and a remix backed up by Phonix. The single is a party-starting house cut of the very highest order; with crisp percussion, thunderous low-end, and an uplifting vocal courtesy of Ola. On the remix, Phonix takes things deeper with a syncopated synth line and progressive vibes that provide a subtle and different take on the original.

UK Artist Mercia Makes City of Villains Sound Delightful

Mercia’s latest EP is more wholesome than the title would lead you to believe. The Coventry-based artist’s City of Villains is a five track EP exploring and reflecting his hometown within the setting of Breakbeat and UK Bass. “6am” starts off the exploration with ethereal atmospheres and lush piano before exploding into a full bodied breaks journey. 95 Bones’ remix follows this with a club ready acetate driven flip of the original which continues the story. The title track “City Of Villains” and Kiddah remix adds further spark to the package with a searing sub bass which is riddled with deep energy. The EP is rounded off by the bubbling and energetic “Hill Cross Flyover” which closes out this journey channeling how we’ve all been feeling this past year waiting for the return of the dance; it carries Strictly Rhythm influence and a prescient vocal motif.

Hey Mercia! Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into music, and how long have you been producing music?

Hi there. Hope you’re well guys! I’m a DJ/Producer from Coventry. Music has always been part of my life. My family forced me to do piano lessons from the age of ten (which now I’m thankful for) and then my brother was heavily involved in the London music scene when I was growing up which influenced my sound. I’ve probably been producing now for about eight years but never got around to actually finishing a project until Motoring Records started pushing music and promoting artists from Coventry.

What motivates your work as an artist?

Listening to other artists and seeing people dance to your music.

What’s the sound of your city, Coventry?

There is a lot of influences in Coventry as it is a melting pot of culture and heritage and I try to capture this into my music. Obviously the famous band The Specials began in the city but now artists like Pa Salieu are setting a precedent for new music coming out the City and I want to bring those influences together in electronic music.

Are there any artists who are currently inspiring your work?

Marc Brauner, David August, Barry Can’t Swim, and Ejeca.

Walk us through the inspiration behind your latest EP, City of Villains?

It really came out from lockdown and weirdly enough watching Breaking Bad sparked my inspiration to write. The project spanned over a twelve month period and I wanted it to explore and reflect on my home town and try to capture the mix of emotions about the City of Villains.

If you could name one thing, what’s something you’re particularly proud of since starting this journey?

Being able to finish ideas off into a EP I’m proud of!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I run an event called Mono along with the Motoring label head. We have a Terrace party on April 30 in Birmingham at the Mill 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM.
