Buenos Aires is Shutting Down Electronic Music in the Entire City

Following the tragedy of five deaths at Time Warp Argentina in Buenos Aires, the city’s municipal judge Roberto Andrés Gallardo has ordered the closure of all nightclubs in the entire city as the first step of an intended reform to cease “all commercial activity involving dancing with live or recorded music.”

The attack on electronic music as a community is evident. The closure of all clubs in the city, regardless of genre of music played, is intended as the first step toward first figuring out which of these venues play electronic music. It is reported that once the thorough investigation is done, only clubs playing electronic music will be forced to shut down, and will remain closed until specific laws are passed to curb drug usage at electronic music events.

Understandably, club owners in the city are not happy. Jorge Becco, the head of the Buenos Aires chamber of discotheque owners, went so far as to question the legality of Gallardo’s actions, “How do you obey a totally unconstitutional order like this one? It’s like shutting the vegetable store because you found food poisoning at the butcher shop.” The sentiment is shared by many of electronic music fans who have taken to Reddit and Facebook to voice their frustration and anger.

The latest move by the city comes after Federal Judge Sebastian Casanello targeted Dell Producciones, the local production and promotion company behind Time Warp. Several of DP’s management and staff have already been detained for questioning including DP attorney Maximilliano Avila and Carlos Maria Garat, the man in charge of the venue’s evacuation plan. The head of the company, Adrian Conci, is being held responsible by authorities for the five deaths at the annual festival and was last reported as still being wanted by the local police.

While it is totally correct for the city’s judiciary and police forces to want to prevent another incident of this kind from ever happening, the targeted closure of all electronic music nightclubs in the city appears to be a narrow-minded approach that doesn’t itself target the real reasons behind the tragedy. Reuters is reporting that several nightclub owners will refuse to follow judge Gallardo’s orders to close down, as they believe it is unconstitutional and inherently illegal.

On April 15th, reports began to arise that people had died following drug usage at Time Warp in Buenos Aires, Argentina. According to the reports, several other people had been rushed to the hospital as a result of complications caused by both drug overdose and festival conditions that included over-crowding and lack of easy access to water or other means of hydration.

Today the The Guardian reports that Buenos Aires mayor, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta, has put a temporary ban on all major electronic music festivals until new city legislature is passed to combat drug usage at these events.

Five people have already been arrested following the events of that fateful weekend, where attendees reported being offered designer drugs including ecstasy pills, doses of LSD, marijuana, poppers and cocaine as well as suffering from lack of ventilation and an oversold festival that meant hour-long lines for water. Due to the incidents on the first day of the festival the second night was promptly canceled.

Time Warp issued the following statement via Facebook on the 21st of April. No further statement has been released since:

“We are dismayed and deeply saddened by the death of five young people at Time Warp Buenos Aires. Our thoughts are with the relatives of the deceased and the five visitors who are still under medical treatment. We pray for their quick recovery.

The German Time Warp companies, “Planwerk Events GmbH & Co KG“ and “cosmopop GmbH“, were not in any way involved in the local organization and planning of the festival. We are listening to your complaints. At the moment we are trying to get a clear picture.

The organizer of the event will refund the money for the second day, corresponding to the value of your ticket. Please email info@multiticket.com.ar to obtain your refund.

We will keep you updated.”

TIME WARP Returns To New York – PHASE ONE LINEUP ANNOUNCED

TimeWarp-Live

Time Warp, the ultimate techno festival, is coming back to New York after making an iconic debut last year at the 39th Street Pier. This year, they will be hosting the weekend marathon event at the historic Bedford Armory, a 108 year old historic monument, in Brooklyn from November 20-21. The two floor, 138,000 sq. ft castle is the perfect venue for what techno legend and Time Warp staple Sven Väth dubbed “the best indoor event on this planet.

Phase one line up has also been confirmed by Time Warp featuring Jamie Jones, Seth Troxler, Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Joseph Capriati , Chris Liebing and many more to be announced soon.  Time Warp has built its reputation by fusing dark, dance floor aligned techno with visceral custom stage production and lighting that is comparable to none making this the most anticipated parties of year.

“Our mission is to make people dance and we’re delighted to do that again in NYC” – Steffen Charles, Time Warp founder

Over the years the global event has become well-known as the meeting place between a festival and warehouse party. Built by artist collectives, technicians, and interdisciplinary creatives from all over the world, the “Signature Floors” such as the Cave 1.0 and 2.0 are large-scale installations which transport visitors through various optical worlds. The space transforms from a cavernous ice cave to an menacing inferno depending on the colors and rhythms of more than 400 lamps and lasers.

Time Warp’s organizers Cosmopop (Sonus Festival in Croatia, Love Family Park and Stuttgart Electronic Music Festival in Germany) are joining forces with world-renowned festival promoter ID&T and New York’s TCE.

Tickets for Time Warp US are on sale via private presale. Fans must register to get a unique access code that will allow them to participate. (guaranteed best prices and a very limited supply).
