The Big Boom of Bad Boombox

Bad Boombox was born in Bulgaria, raised in the USA, and currently based between Prague, Czech Republic and Sofia, Bulgaria. The Bad Boombox project emerged in Berlin back in 2019, and grew online via funny content and music/mixes during the pandemic. Currently he’s on tour at clubs around Europe, looking to expand. His mission: add the color and fun back to the techno/dance scene like it was in the 90s/2000s.

Similar to cable TV “cord-cutting,” media executives do not feel threatened by the increasing popularity of the social media app: TikTok.

For more than a decade, cable and broadcast executives brushed aside the threat of cable TV “cord-cutting” (ditching traditional cable TV) as either a nonexistent threat or a temporary phenomenon. There were endless reports about how these users were poor and unimportant (they weren’t), or how the phenomenon would end once Millennials bought homes and started procreating (it didn’t).

TikTok is a social media app commonly known for short videos, dance challenges and often incorporating music from various artists. It has quickly become one of the most widely used social media platforms. It’s also become a powerful tool within the music industry. Artists are embracing it as an effective way to connect with their fans as well as promote and better monetize their music. Today it reports it has over 1 billion active users. With so many eyes (and ears) on the platform, why aren’t more techno artists jumping on the TikTok bandwagon? More importantly, just because they can does it mean they should?
