Renowned audio engineer and enigmatic producer Maya Jane Coles has been testing the waters over the summer with a renewed alias called Nocturnal Sunshine. Nocturnal Sunshine is another facet of Maya Jane Coles’ history of musical exploration, from her beginnings in deep house with House of Om to her current high standing in the scene with darker, complex forms of industrial techno and house. With Nocturnal Sunshine, Maya incorporates the raw sounds of 90s UK dubstep with the heavier dub side of techno to produce sensual remixes and original tunes. Read more

Calculus’s upcoming “Vaporizer EP” on Anemone Recordings

Anemone Recordings head hancho Calculus is making his debut with Vaporizer EP this October 26th 2015 with two tracks “Vaporizer” and “Sacred Gudgeon”. Browsing through the labels recordings, you’ll notice this label is constantly shelling out some very abstract and future sounding techno. If there’s one major thing to appreciate about any label it would probably be the labels consistent originality and true reflection of the sound it wants to portray. The tracks “Vaporizer” and “Sacred Gudgeon” are definitely a raw reflection of the sound that many DJ’s, such as Len Faki and Nikola Gala, are starting to appreciate about this label and it’s artists.

Vaporizer: It’s always fun to hear a hard classic 4/4 techno track with consistent hard bassy kicks. The melodic chords dangling themselves above the track teased with a filter give the track an immaculately crafted tension that makes you crave what’s coming next. The deep and abstract sounds that lay within the various layers of the track give it a type of mysterious, industrial, and disorienting aura.

Sacred Gudgeon: The atmosphere and effects were crafted so well in this track. You feel like your in a suspensful part of some pixar movie about alien invasions. The bass-line that comes in later in the track is very unruly and is filtered up and down throughout the track to build tension. The rolling synth gives the track its dose of higher end frequencies that sprinkle the track nicely to give it that other worldly type of atmosphere.

This EP will be available for your downloading pleasure October 26, 2015 on Anemone Recordings.

From Drum and Bass to Techno Revival on Zia’s Void EP

Zia_PressPic-e1445268338654

The enigmatic Leeds-based producer Zia has risen from the ashes of a drum and bass past with an upcoming release titled Void EP (TT034) on Turbo Recordings. The EP includes two original techno tracks as well as a polished minimal remix by Alexi Delano, who coincidentally has returned to the Canadian label that released his LP fifteen years ago.

The first track titled Recall is riddled with sweltry vocal cuts and has a liberatingly bassy drumline that conjures an animalistic drive deep in the crevices of the mind. It’s a good balance of high and low elements that elicits a body high and some trippy contemplations. Read more

Jeff Mills Transported Into the Time Tunnel by Little Alien People at ADE Performance

jeff-2

October 21, 2015. On this very day, Marty McFly travels into the future to save his children in Back to the Future Part II. In an alternate universe, little aliens appeared at Jeff Mills’ performance at ADE and brought him through the Time Tunnel. So in honor of Back to the Future Day and Jeff Mills’ out-of-this-world performance, we dive down the rabbit hole of techno and its relation with futurism and science fiction.

Techno came about as an assimilation of ideas about music and futurism (afrofuturism in the Detroit scene) in a progressive society that coincided with developments in modernism, capitalism, and technological spirituality, Ă  la Alvin Toffler’s The Third Wave. This is where the term “techno rebel” became synchronized with the identity of being one who listens to techno music. Read more

Q&A: Justin James Returns to SCI+TEC with “Planned Deviation”

Justin James Live 2

There’s no denying that Canada has produced some of the finest in minimal techno. The pioneer that put Windsor, Canada on the map goes to none other than Richie Hawtin, and in the wake of the minimal wave of Canada and Detroit, the next pool of artists began to emerge. One such artist is Justin James.

“I have always been into music that is stripped down. Even the hip-hop that I love has a very minimal structure in production. Other than that, being from Windsor and having a close neighbor like Detroit, it’s impossible to not gravitate to these amazing scenes and the amazing artist that have emerged from them” – Justin James

Justin James Album ArtWith a noticeable influence stemming from Detroit and Canada, it’s no surprise that Justin James has landed releases on Minus, SCI+TEC, Trapez, and Night Light Records. Two years since his last release on SCI+TEC, Justin James follows up on the powerful minimal label with the Planned Deviation, a two track EP complete with rubbery elastic basslines and percussions that coincide so swiftly with SCI+TEC.

The EP has been in the rotation for quite some time, receiving immense support from minimal curators around the globe. Justin James recently took some time to answer a few questions about his summer, life, and of course, Planned Deviation.

Take a look at our Q&A with Justin James below, and make sure to grab your digital copy of Planned Deviation here on Beatport.
