deadmau5 Chooses Techno and House To Launch His 2017 BBC Radio 1 Residency

deadmau5 studio

Last week deadmau5 made news when his New Year’s Eve set at Decadence NYE in Arizona became subject of attack by fans of EDM artist Marshmello, who took the stage after him to perform the headlining set of the night. The reason? According to Marshmello fans the Canadian producer had played a boring set, a perhaps expected and uneducated conclusion from EDM fans who found themselves listening to house and techno tracks by Maceo Plex and Jay Lumen, amongst others.

In the following days the Toronto-born artist was unapologetic and rightly so. In line with his stance, he has now kicked off his 2017 BBC Radio 1 Residency with a debut mix that is filled with underground dance tracks, spanning genres that include progressive house and techno.

There is no denying that Joel Zimmerman as an artist has always preferred to steer clear of the mainstream side of dance music, despite his widely popular progressive signature tracks landing him coveted headlining slots at some of the world’s most popular EDM festivals. As EDM blew up in the States (and the rest of the world) Joel has continuously taken a stance against what he has perceived as sell-out artists playing recycled music for a quick buck. Instead, he has continued to stay true to his roots, while recently perhaps digging deeper than ever with on-stage collaborations with Richie Hawtin and Eric Prydz, as well as solo performances filled with house and techno sounds.

His inaugural 2017 BBC Radio mix is a testament to the direction Joel is on, one he does not look like to be leaving any time soon. The two-hour mix includes a Pig & Dan premiere, as well as works from Maceo Plex, Pan-Pot and Jon Hopkins just to name a few.

See below for full track list and to enjoy the mix:

1. deadmau5 – Imaginary Friends

Watch Nature Documentaries While Listening To Dance Music, It’s Beautiful

kiuav1yad-i-pablo-garcia-saldana

There is arguably nothing more mesmerizing than the breathtaking and complex beauty of nature. We live on a diverse, awe-inspiring and marvelous planet filled with an expanse of fauna, flora and scenery that is second to none. In 2006 we were glued to our televisions when the BBC released the first Planet Earth series, at the time the most expensive nature documentary series every filmed. Fast forward to today and we are tuning in weekly to Planet Earth II, learning more about the vast and expansive nature of the world that surrounds us thanks to never-seen-before high definition footage and the soothing narration of Sir David Attenborough.

As a lover of dance music and nature I have often gotten home from the club, put on a random nature video from YouTube and pressed “play” on my favorite mix. The juxtaposition of the two has always formed a powerful artistic medium for the senses. The experience is now improved ten-fold thanks to Planet Earth’s one-of-a-kind imagery, and specially curated mixes to be played along footage from the show. Benji B put together a Planet Earth II Mix that goes hand-in-hand with drone footage from the series, filled with music from Carl Craig, Flying Lotus, Actress and more. Similarly, David Rodigan compiled a Jungle mix set to phenomenal Planet Earth II footage of the jungles of Costa Rica and Australia.

With the amount of combinations endless, we hope to see more of these artistic collaborations between nature and dance music. We encourage artists from all over the world, no matter how “big” or “small” they may be, to incorporate beautiful electronic soundscapes with nature footage.

Q&A: PoleGroup’s Reeko Discusses Spanish Techno and ‘Unknown Landscapes Vol. IV’ Ahead of U.S. Gigs

Juan Rico, the Asturian known in the techno scene as Reeko, has been DJing since 1997 although it was in 2002 that the world got a first taste of his production skills when he introduced himself professionally with a debut release on Sweden’s Emergence imprint.

While Reeko may be his best-known alias, the Spanish techno producer has made music and played under a series of monikers, as evidenced by his latest EP entitled Cubismo, released under his Architectural alias. Over the years Reeko has also been involved with a series of label projects, including Mental Disorder and Evidence, all before finding his home amongst the elite of Hispanic techno with PoleGroup.

In fact, Reeko was given the honors of compiling PoleGroup’s Unknown Landscapes: Vol. IV, a CD mix series of unreleased tracks, mixed and compiled by a member of the label’s roster. The Spanish producer and track selector has selected 22 previously unreleased tracks including work by label favorites Exium, Kwartz, Jonas Kopp, Pfirter and Oscar Mulero, as well as new faces on the imprint such as Reggy van Oers, DJ Hyperactive, Unbalance and Kangding Ray. The release features two tracks by Reeko himself, including “Basic Sentence” which is being premiered exclusively by 6AM today.
