Raving During COVID-19

Raving During COVID-19: Are DJs Compromising Club and DIY Culture?

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: raving during COVID-19. At the start of COVID-19 the dance music community came together and found alternate solutions to live music events. Necessity is the mother of invention and many quickly became tech experts. From DJs to promoters, they flooded the virtual gates hosting live streams through various channels. However, after almost six months since lockdown first started, it seems as if many have had enough of these pseudo-get-togethers, including some big-name DJs.

Our Changing Industry: Nina Kraviz Ray-Bans, Music On Armani Shoes and Big Star DJs on GTA

Music On Armani shoes and Nina Kraviz Ray-Bans: no one would have predicted something like this in the late ’80s or early ’90s.

Back then, and until the rise of DJ superstardom, DJs and those involved with electronic music were considered to be a danger to the status quo and to the system, the agitators behind illegal raves, the evil pipers leading the world’s youth toward quasi-anarchy.

But things have changed, and they have changed a lot. DJs are idolized by the masses and whereas in the United States that is mostly the case with mainstream EDM names, in Europe it’s techno, house and tech house artists that are on this pedestal. No matter which side of the pond you are on, eyes are on club culture and brands have become essential components for club nights, festivals and other events to occur in the electronic music scene.

Ten Fantastic DJ Quotes: Dixon, Marco Carola, Sven VĂ€th, Maceo Plex and more

ricardo villalobos

It’s not easy to talk about electronic music, and especially so when the genres in question are house and techno, mostly instrumental and oftentimes devoid of lyrics.

The lack of vocals make it easy to get lost in a sea of technical adjectives and meaningless explanations. We should let the music do the talking, sure, but what about the producers and DJs… what do they think?

We have collected ten of our favorite DJ quotes from some of the best producers, DJs, record label owners and promoters in the game:

Why Kappa FuturFestival Is Worth Making the Trip For

Full disclosure: my first Kappa FuturFestival in 2012 didn’t take much traveling, but was nevertheless more than worth the trip. I lived in Milan then and reaching the nearby Northern Italian city of Turin (Torino) took less than two hours by train. By then the festival had undergone two editions and had changed format to become the first 10o% daytime festival in Italy, ranking as one of the top 5 electronic music festivals to attend in Europe.

I was surprised when I arrived at the venue of Parco Dora to be surrounded by tens of thousands who had come from not only just all over Italy, but also the rest of Europe. In a continent where you can find huge underground dance music events in every single corner, from the island of Malta that sits between Sicily and Northern Africa to quarries in Estonia and everything in between, it is sometimes a little difficult to understand how much Europeans travel in search of great music. Once you see it though, finding yourself surrounded by thousands speaking a myriad of different languages, you realize just how powerful the music is and how much draw certain festivals have.

Kappa FuturFestival is one of those events that attracts visitors from all over Europe. More recently though, it’s iconic location, seen in photos and videos that have been shared by the millions on social media, and quality-heavy lineups have been enticing crowds beyond the continent to make the trip to Torino to attend.

Earlier in the month festival organizers had announced that Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Sasha & Digweed, Sven Vath and Tale of Us would all be playing the 2017 edition, all now receiving some star-studded company with the Phase 2 lineup announcement that came this week. Attendees at the futuristic Parco Dora will be basking in the sun come July 8th and 9th, enjoying sets by the likes of Seth Troxer b2b The Martinez Brothers, Nina Kraviz, Paul Kalkbrenner and the legendary Fatboy Slim.

More names will be added, of course, making music one of the focal points of this edition like all others in the past. The beauty of a trip to Kappa FuturFestival is the two-in-one deal you’re offered by the simple nature of its location. Turin is a majestic Italian city of industrial workers, the home town of automobile giants Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Rome, and also a city full of history and beauty. The city sits on the bank of the Po, Italy’s longest river, and under the watchful eye of the iconic Mole Antonelliana and the soaring Italian Alps, and is surrounded by some of Italy’s most significant and revered wineries.

A visit to FuturFestival means being able to choose from a variety of other travel options in Turin and beyond, beginning with the nearby alps, the nearby French Riviera or perhaps some of Italy’s northern lakes including the famous Lake Como. The cities of Milan, Genoa and Florence are also nearby and easily accessible by train, as are other locations in France and Switzerland.

Alongside you at FuturFestival there will be 40, 000 other techno lovers as well as the usual world class audio systems, high quality production and a real attention to detail including tickets through smartphones and Cashless payment technology on site. Always environmentally aware and with focus on sustainability, Kappa FuturFestival proves once again why it is one of the most heralded techno festivals in the world.
