Papa Sven VĂ€th Is Caught Watching the 2016 Euro Cup While DJing at Awakenings

It is said that the love for football (soccer) knows no limits. In fact growing up in Italy, there was a saying I learned while just a kid and still hold true to this day, “In life, there’s only two things that never ever change: your mamma and your football team!”

But what about techno, or one’s passion for DJing and electronic music?

#TBT Series: The Story of Tresor Berlin and Its Influence On The City’s Techno Scene [Video]

TresorOld

It could have been like any other regular club, a shooting star that blinks across the sky of nightlife like a burning diamond, only to dissipate shortly after into a black hole of nothingness. It could have joined the countless others who fall victim of the short lifespan plague that permeates the nightclub scene across the globe. It could have, but it wasn’t.

Tresor Berlin made history, but no one would have expected that back on March 13th 1991 when the club first opened. Today, the techno institution is in the midst of blowing 25 candles to celebrate its life at the forefront of the electronic music movement, and is throwing a series of large parties to commemorate the special occasion. The celebrations began March 12th at the Berlin club and continued on to Milan, Denmark, Amsterdam, London and Spain before their upcoming US stop in Detroit during Movement weekend and a final flurry of dates in Australia and back in Europe.

Inside Tresor in the 90s

Back in 1991, Tresor opened shop in a shack on Potsdamer Platz, located atop the the vault of the Wertheim department store. The Berlin wall had just fallen less than two years earlier, leaving the city’s youth in search for a connection and a sense of freedom many could only find through music. They found that connection at Tresor.

Armed with an art gallery license and a three-month lease, the venue owners woke up every day expecting authorities to barge in and shut operations down. Instead, things continued and the venue carried on to make history by connecting the music and artists coming out of Detroit with the rise of Berlin’s love and burning passion for techno. As the club itself proudly recalls, it went on to be the home of Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, the brain behind the grandiose Tresor Park parties, and the mastermind of the various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven VĂ€th in the 90s.

Despite complications, temporary closures and raids, the techno persisted and persists still to this day. Its location may have changed in 2005, but the club and its religious attachment to techno haven’t. Tresor is very much alive and well, and with it is the message of music and freedom it has been carrying for twenty-five years.

In 2008, a documentary directed by Tilmann KĂŒnze entitled “SubBerlin” was released. It highlighted the history of Tresor from its beginning in 1991 until the closure of its original location. The one-and-a-half hour video includes interviews with many of the artists that played at the venue, from Atkins to Sven VĂ€th, as well as the people that made the club happen, such as original founder Dimitri Hegemann. The original documentary was released on TV, and later made available on DVD by the club in 2012.

Movement To Touch Down In Croatia This Summer

Movement Croatia

Movement is expanding to the promised land of Croatia, dubbed by many as the new Ibiza following recent years of festival and party expansion.

Movement Croatia is set to debut this coming July with a large roster of techno and house talent that includes the likes of Sven VÀth, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettmann, Derrick May, Octave One, Steve Rachmad, Robert Hood, Nina Kraviz, Dave Clarke and Margaret Dygas.

The Movement name has been expanding over the years, taking over the Detroit festivities in 2006 and establishing an Italian version in the northern city of Turin just over nine years ago. 2015 saw the Detroit festival touch down in Puerto Rico for a special Caribbean getaway, with the Italian version of the brand visiting Croatia for a smaller club edition last summer that now turns out was the stepping stone for the festival set to launch this July.

KiNK and Kölsch To Remix Two Sven VĂ€th Early 90’s Classics

accidentinparadise

Cocoon is set to release a two-track EP on April 15th containing remixes of timeless Sven VÀth tracks by none other than KiNK and Kölsch.

KiNK, top-notch Bulgarian producer listed as #1 on Resident Advisor’s poll for Best Live Acts of 2015, is poised to put his signature on 1992’s “Accident in Paradise,” while Kölsch is remixing “Robot” from the 1994 LP The Harlequin, The Robot And The Ballet-Dancer. Both tracks saw plenty of dance floor play at Omen, the Frankfurt club VĂ€th was part-owner of until its closure in 1998 and were originally released on Eye Q Records, the imprint he started together with Matthias Hoffmann and Heinz Roth.

Whereas KiNK’s influence turns “Accident in Paradise” into a true acid-influenced re-work, Kölsch’s product has a bigger more energetic sound. Both remixes clock in at well over 9 minutes without feeling drawn out.

You can listen to both clips on Wordandsound.

Cocoon In The Park Announces Lineup for 2016

CocoonInThePark2

Located in the majestic grounds of Temple Newsam House on the outskirts of Leeds, the 8th successive edition of Cocoon in the Park is poised to continue its strong tradition as a diverse one-day affair with focus on music and production.

Surrounded by typically lush British countryside and armed with a massive sound system, this year’s Cocoon will take place on July 9th and will begin with three back-to-back sets starting with emerging label artists Annie Erez and Bobby O’Donnel. Next up, it will be the turn of Fuse London’s Enzo Siragusa to get on the decks accompanied by Rossko, followed by the combination of Eats Everything and Patrick Topping. The line-up continues with Chicago’s Green Velvet making his first Cocoon in the Park visit as a special guest before handing the booth to New York City duo The Martinez Brothers. Unsurprisingly, the night’s closing duties will be given to none other than the imprint’s leader, Sven VĂ€th.

Sven Vath 2015 Essential Mix

Sven Vath live

“When I was asked to do this Essential Mix I thought it might be something special to compile a selection of tracks from my label Cocoon Recordings. You’ll hear old stuff, current releases and some unreleased music which will be out soon.” – Sven Vath

Essential mixes for BBC are a milestone achievement in this industry, and are treated with the upmost respect. This past Fourth of July weekend, Sven Vath took to the BBC Radio 1 airwaves to deliver an essential mix encompassing the vast catalog of his label, Cocoon Recordings.
