Council of Ibiza Could Soon Have The Power To Ban Any Open Air Event They Want

Ibiza is synonymous with fiesta, an island made famous in three decades ago thanks to its open-air terrace parties at iconic clubbing institutions such as Amnesia and Space. Yet, in recent years we have seen officials in the island scale down on its daytime and open-air events, instituting a 6am sound curfew with penalties for clubs violating it as well as shutting down beach parties including events such as tINI & The Gang, Dynamic and Detroit Love.

Officials have come as far as to claim that the island cannot handle an increase of tourism, while residents keep using the leverage to contain the scope of the parties still going on.

However, things could get a lot worse soon. This is because of the passage of the new tourism law for Spain’s Balearic Islands, in which Ibiza is a part of. The law was passed on Tuesday and is set to be implemented soon, with an amendment made that would grant Ibiza and Balearic’s three other local councils the power to “regulate, determine or prohibit, in a reasonable manner, tourist activities” related to entertainment. This would apply to any location that hosts musical events, including clubs, café conciertos, beach clubs and ballrooms.

A 12th Century Monastery Becomes a Music Festival Venue

With so many music festivals held each year, there is no shortage as far as the music and the experience is concerned. These festivals provide a different atmosphere and vibe that enriches the overall festival experience each of them has to offer, thanks in part to the venues they are being held in.

Since music festivals can be held anywhere, the more offbeat the venue, the more memorable the festival will be. It can held on a boat, an abandoned warehouse, or even one of these unique festival locations that we have touched upon before. Now, we can add another unique location for a music festival: a monastery.

A former monastery, to be precise, near the city of Ronda in Spain’s Andalucia region. Still, it is one location many would not even consider as a venue for something as vibrant and raw as a techno music festival. But as the pictures here show, the monastery provides a serene and stunning view that serves as a great backdrop for an event like this.

This 12th century structure will be the venue of the first ever Uva Festival, happening from June 2 to 4. This boutique festival will feature some of the talented artists in the industry such as Antal, San Proper, Greg Beato, and Donna Leake, among many others. Record label Moody’s Collective serves as the festival’s organizers.

Toclets are available only on a limited basis so it is best to get them early if you are interested in attending this festival’s inaugural edition. For more information on the festival and the tickets, check out the Uva Festival event page.

Following two long raids at Amnesia Ibiza by Spanish authorities, including an initial seventeen-hour search and a second one that uncovered over 2 million Euros in cash stashed in hidden compartments, the Tax Agency (AEAT) of Spain has gone on to search Space and Privilege.

Local news outlet Diario de Ibiza, who has kept abreast on the investigation, reports that the AEAT is looking into around 87 nightlife spots across the entire country of Spain, including four on the Balearic island and international clubbing destination. Four people were arrested during the Amnesia raids, with a total of fourteen individuals reportedly under investigation at the current moment.

The AEAT was assisted by Police in their searches of Space and Privilege, with latest reports claiming that other large sums of money were found during these latter parts of the ongoing Operation Chopin investigation.

According to another Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, the four people arrested in the Amnesia operation have been given conditional release — they must periodically appear before a judge and cannot leave Spain without permission. Their passports must also be handed in to authorities as part of their release.

Cristian Varela Releases Full Length Album on Carl Cox’s Intec Label

Cristian Varela Vinyl

Of all the countries and dance communities around the world, one can’t argue that Spain has some of the most enthusiastic crowds out there – both on Ibiza and on the mainland. This energy stems from the high quality music, with the country’s artists playing an integral role in progressing dance culture. Among many Spanish artists, Cristian Varela is at the forefront, and his new album Max & Max further solidifies his position in both the Spanish and international scene.

Max & Max is the fusion of different sounds, emotions and feelings from different periods of my life,” states Varela. “This mixture, and the combination of ways I’ve created my music over the last few years, has made in my opinion, a complete, dynamic and emotional album.”

Varela Album ArtMax & Max finds a fitting home on Carl Cox and Jon Rundell’s label, Intec Digital. After brief EP’s foreshadowing the release, the full length album now sees the light of day. The album starts with a percussive heavy workout on the track Caramba – a track embodying the traditional style of energetic tech house that Cristian Varela has become so known for. Max & Max swiftly transitions into dubby mainroom groovers such as Blanky and Penthouse before moving into serious techno affairs on tracks such as Alarm Waves, Human, or Ovnivon.

With this in mind, Varela has been road testing some tracks from the album on dance floors all across the globe, and has settled on some clear-cut winners.

“All the tracks are very special for me but the most powerful on the dance floors are ‘Caramba’, ‘Fascinator’, ‘Human’, ‘Destiny’, ‘Great’ and ‘Loveperc’”

The tracks on Max & Max sound great individually, which is nice from a DJ perspective, but as a complete body of work Varela accomplishes an extremely enjoyable musical journey through techno and electronic textures. These days albums are refreshing to hear from an artist, and Cristian Varela nails this release for Intec.
