Space Ibiza Closing Fiesta Will Feature Nearly 100 Artists

Space CLosing Fiesta 1

Back in the distant 1989 many thought it was crazy when Pepe Rosello took control of a massive building in Playa d’en Bossa and transformed it into a nightclub. At the time, that area of the island hosted families and other vacationers looking for the peace of the Ibiza’s idyllic beaches. Back then, the nightlife was either inland or on the other side of the island in San Antonio.

Yet, Rosello’s vision was to change Ibiza and the future of nightlife throughout the world forever, focusing on a different musical, sensorial and hedonistic experience than any other club open at the time.

Everyone knows the pages of history that Rosello and his team have written since. Space Ibiza became one of the undisputed top nightclubs in the entire world, launching the careers of many of today’s most respected artists the likes of Carl Cox, Erick Morillo and David Morales, all the while inaugurating marathon Sunday Night parties and several other long-lasting residencies that soon found their spot on the bucket list of dance music fans throughout the world.

For just over a year now, the nightlife industry and all those who step on dance floors throughout the world have known that Rosello signed a deal to sell the club to the neighboring UshuaĂŻa Group from across the street. Richie Hawtin ended his ENTER. parties last season and Carl Cox followed the news by claiming that his Music Is Revolution residency would end the moment Space Ibiza was set to close.

Although the British producer, a personal friend of Rosello’s, has since revealed that Space Ibiza is looking to open back up in the next couple of years or so at a new location, all that is confirmed right now is that on Sunday the 2nd of October Space will host its final Closing Fiesta. And wow, what a part it’s going to be. We initially announced that residents Carl Cox and Tale of Us would be headlining, and suspected that the rest of the line-up would be huge. Yet, no one was prepared for the size of what has now been announced.

Nearly 100 artists are now scheduled to play the last final hurrah to what many consider to be the best club in the world. Tickets are set to sell out, so if you’re planning to attend we strongly suggest you snag one soon.

Space Ibiza to Reopen In Two Years at a New Location

image

If you thought this was the last ever summer for Space Ibiza, think again.

Anyone who has been following the club’s recent news of the past year knows that Carl Cox, resident and personal friend of long-term owner Pepe Rosello, was the first to break the news that the UshuaĂŻa Group was purchasing the current location where Space resides

In his latest interview, however, he reveals the news countless have been waiting for: Space will reopen elsewhere in the island in the fairly near future.

Speaking to Ticketmaster, he stated, “Plans are on the table for it opening at another site but it won’t happen for at least two years and will it be the same? We don’t know. I don’t know whether I will be involved because there are so many variables.

Carl Cox and Tale Of Us to Headline Space Ibiza’s Final Closing Party

Carl Cox love space

The 2nd of October will mark the end of an era, the final closing party of Space Ibiza as we’ve come to know it before club owner Pepe Rosello hands over the keys to the UshuaĂŻa group at the end of the season, following 27 years at the helm of the world-renowned nightlife institution.

The transition has been somewhat telling, with Carl Cox revealing that 2016 would be the final year of his Music Is Revolution residency at Space and on the island altogether, and Richie Hawtin similarly announcing that ENTER. wouldn’t return past the 2015 season.

It is unclear exactly what will become of the venue once ownership changes, but we do now know that Carl Cox and Tale of Us will be headlining the final fiesta to close the 2016 season and the long magical run of what has become one of the top clubbing destinations of the entire world.

Many more artists will be announced in the coming weeks, for what is sure to be the hottest party on the island for 2016. Traditionally, Space’s Closing Fiesta is so large that a special outdoor stage is constructed in the massive parking lot adjacent to the club in order to accommodate both the massive lineup that is to be revealed soon, and the crowds that will come to pay their respects as the curtain drops on the legendary venue.

Spanish Authorities Have Also Searched Space and Privilege Nightclubs in Ibiza

Following two long raids at Amnesia Ibiza by Spanish authorities, including an initial seventeen-hour search and a second one that uncovered over 2 million Euros in cash stashed in hidden compartments, the Tax Agency (AEAT) of Spain has gone on to search Space and Privilege.

Local news outlet Diario de Ibiza, who has kept abreast on the investigation, reports that the AEAT is looking into around 87 nightlife spots across the entire country of Spain, including four on the Balearic island and international clubbing destination. Four people were arrested during the Amnesia raids, with a total of fourteen individuals reportedly under investigation at the current moment.

The AEAT was assisted by Police in their searches of Space and Privilege, with latest reports claiming that other large sums of money were found during these latter parts of the ongoing Operation Chopin investigation.

According to another Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, the four people arrested in the Amnesia operation have been given conditional release — they must periodically appear before a judge and cannot leave Spain without permission. Their passports must also be handed in to authorities as part of their release.

#TBT Series: The ’90s Sound of pre-EDM David Guetta

David Guetta 90s

If I mention the words “David Guetta” to anyone I party with these days, the instant reaction is that of a raised eyebrow and looks full of scorn and contempt. Joking aside, the truth is that although the French producer and DJ currently (and for the last 6 years) epitomizes the world and sound of EDM, he used to be a true symbol of 90’s and early 2000 house music.

Plenty have debated on Guetta’s change throughout the years, but the truth is that history clearly underscores his role as one of the mid-90’s pioneers of French house. Back then, he made a name for himself as one of the key influencers of Parisian nightlife as both a DJ and promoter of nights at such renowned Paris hot spots as Folies Pigalle, Queen, Bataclan, Palace and Les Bains, where he invited legendary names in the house like Little Louie Vega, David Morales, DJ Pierre and Roger Sanchez to join him on the turntables.

Guetta 90s

His first two albums, “Just A Little More Love” in 2002 and “Guetta Blaster” in 2004 preceded EDM both in sound and scope. Sandwiched between them, Guetta released his “F*** Me I’m Famous” compilation, which famously went gold – a definite big achievement for a compilation effort at the time. The sound of those first two LPs were decisively electro-pop, in no small part influenced by the likes of Depeche Mode, Dear Or Alive and New Order. “Guetta Blaster” heralded the beginning of Guetta’s true foray into the world frequented by the urban, popular artists that were soon to collaborate and influence his sound for the years to follow.

But before then, in the distant 90’s, Guetta’s sets were influential and a true representation of the house sound that permeated France, Europe and by default the iconic Balearic island of Ibiza. Below is a video of Guetta on the decks of Space Ibiza in the late 90’s, a perfect illustration of just how much things have changed in the fifteen odd years that have passed since.

Seems hard to believe? Check out Guetta’s 1992 track “Up & Away” feat. Robert Owens and released on Dance Pool. The garage-inspired house track made waves at the time, a true testament that Guetta is capable of not only playing true house music, but producing it as well.

Yet, it is perhaps Guetta’s first recorded single – a 1990 hip-hop collaboration with Sydney entitled “Nation Rap” – that best predicted Guetta’s current work with rap, hip-hop and pop artists in the form of today’s EDM, while demonstrating his versatility as a producer and DJ. Below is a video of the two musicians performing the single live on France’s FR3 TV channel back in 1991.

It’s Time To Start Saying Goodbye to Space Ibiza As We Know It

That Space Ibiza is about to undergo massive changes is not news. Last year it was announced that Pepe RosellĂł’s 27-year reign as owner of the club was ending following the 2016 summer season, after which the club’s lease will be taken over by Matutes Group, the owners of UshuaĂŻa across the street. Following the announcement, Richie Hawtin decided that ENTER.Ibiza would end its residency at the club, while Carl Cox made it abundantly clear that 2016 would be the last summer for Music Is Revolution on the island, citing RosellĂł’s departure as head of venue as one of the primary reasons for this change.

There has been a lot of speculation since on the exact future of the venue. We know that Roselló currently owns the world-famous Space Ibiza brand, and when asked about plans for the space in the coming years, the CEO of Palladium Hotel Group and VP of the Matutes Group, Abel Matutes Prats stated, “Why change when we don’t have to?”

He told told the Diario de Ibiza, “We want to take care and continue with the project to make Platja d’en Bossa an entertainment area.” He went on to categorically deny rumors that Space would be turned into a shopping center, specifying that the club’s current “class 41” license limits the venue’s uses to leisure and recreation. This means that it cannot be turned into a hotel or merchandise operation.

What did become clear from his interview, is that while exact plans aren’t decided yet, the club will be turned into an operation that mostly caters to the same audience UshuaĂŻa attracts. That is a more VIP-centric crowd than Space has been known for.

He specified, “Obviously we want to keep it as a club, but also want to dedicate it to the audience in which we are now focusing, which will be complementary to Ushuaïa.”

This year’s UshuaĂŻa residencies are predominantly EDM-focused, with only Ants on Saturdays dedicated to more underground sounds. The rest of the week sees David Guetta take over on Mondays, Hardwell on Tuesdays, Axwell and Ingrosso on Wednesdays, Steve Aoki and Oliver Heldens alternating on Thursdays, Tinie Tempah on Fridays and Armin van Buuren on Sundays.

It is unsure whether Tale Of Us’ new Afterlife residency, which starts this summer, will continue on once keys for the club change hands. This may truly be the last season to enjoy Space Ibiza as we have all known it, after which it may be time to say goodbye and prepare ourselves for the changes the owners of UshuaĂŻa will introduce.

Going to Ibiza? New Holiday Tax Goes Into Effect This Summer

IbizaBeach

News has just come in that anyone traveling to Ibiza from July 1st onwards will be subjected to a new ‘Sustainable Tourist Tax’, with the funds collected going towards protecting the beautiful resources of the magical island. This is the latest change following news that local government will be forcing clubs to close doors at 6:30am starting this summer.

The tax is being excised by the government of the Balearic Islands, meaning that  it will be applicable to other Mediterranean islands that fall under its jurisdiction such as Majorca and Menorca. The tax will be collected at the traveler’s accommodation, and will vary depending on the type of housing chosen for the vacation. It will begin at €0.50 per day for hostels and campsites and go up to €2 for luxury hotels.

Anyone traveling to Malta will also be subjected to a similar tax this summer, with those 18 year olds expected to pay €0.50 per night from June. Mainland Spain and other Mediterranean locations are = not included in this new tax.

Back in 2002 the islands introduced a similar tax, but back then the results weren’t successful causing it to be canceled after just one season. At the time holiday makers decided to travel elsewhere as a result, with Turkey, Egypt and and Tunisia reaping most of the benefits. Due to recent reluctance of people to visit these latter countries, it is expected that tourism to the Balearic islands won’t suffer from this new tax. In fact, Spain as a whole is expected to have it’s most successful summer ever according to The

Video Shows Richie Hawtin Introducing New DJ Gear to ENTER.Ibiza Guest DJs

PlayDifferently

Photo: DJ Tech Tools

As we reported in January, Richie Hawtin partnered up with former Allen & Heath pioneer Andy Rigby-Jones to create Play Differently, a collaborative partnership that aims to expand the spectrum of DJ creativity through new technology and hardware.

At NAMM 2016 (in Annheim, California), Richie officially unveiled the project as a working collaboration of friends new and old, including a partnership with the Audiotonix group responsible for the innovation and distribution of such renowned audio brands as DiGiCo and the aforementioned Allen & Heath. The first prototype went into testing use as early as 2014, and we learned that it had since been made available through various stages of its project at select leading worldwide events, including Glastonbury in the UK and the ENTER.Ibiza party series that Richie spearheaded at Space.

Richie has now released a video promoting Play Differently and highlighting some of the key events of the past couple of years. Footage shows the M_nus boss introducing the still-to-be-unveiled product to the likes of Chris Liebing, Marcell Dettmann, Josh Wink, Tiga and DJ Tech Tool’s Ean Golden.

While unclear whether this is the case, the video includes clips of Dubfire, Recondite, Matador and Gaiser performing during the last few seasons of ENTER’s now ended residency in Ibiza, leading to the assumption that they tested out the prototype live at Space.

See the video below.
