SoundCloud DJs Will (Finally) Not See Their Mixes Taken Down For Copyright Infringement

SoundCloud Laptop

There is arguably nothing less frustrating for SoundCloud users than seeing their DJ mixes taken down for “copyright infringement,” often running the risk of getting their entire accounts banned and with that entire months and years of hard work go down the drain.

The irony is that it goes against the very principle of DJing, and especially so when artists have see their mixes and tracks taken down when it was their own music in the first place. It has happened to well-established artists like Kaskade, and it resulted in many leaving the music hosting/streaming platform for other options.

That is changing however, as SoundCloud announces a change in the way they view DJ mixes uploaded to their website. Eric Wahlforss, founder of SoundCloud, recently spoke to Groove and revealed the change:

“These problems with the introduction of SoundCloud Go are a thing of the past, and also for users who do not subscribe. During the negotiations for our subscription service as well as an agreement was with collecting societies like GEMA achieved in Germany.

“This means that DJ mixes can now be legally and problem-free on SoundCloud. So this is a very positive news for DJs.”

Soundcloud Annual Revenue Increased 43% to Nearly $28 Million

SoundCloud logo

Remember when plenty of people thought SoundCloud’s days were numbered? Earlier in the year news making the rounds told a story of a company struggling to make revenue, not moving forward technologically and in dire need of cash flow.

Things are now taking a turn for the best however, perhaps explaining why Spotify has been rumored to be in advance talks to acquire its current music streaming rival. According to financial data analyzed by Digital Music News, SoundCloud has managed to bolster revenue up by 43% in the past year to a total nearing $28 million.

Most likely driven by advertising revenue, the increase points to much needed positive change for the company, especially after reported losses of $43.9 million in 2014. The information comes courtesy of company financial intelligence purveyor PrivCo,

Listen to Eric Prydz’s New Two Track EP, Released Under Cirez D Moniker

Cirez D

2016 has been prolific for Eric Prydz. The Swedish producer and DJ released a debut album earlier in the year and has now released his second Cirez D EP in just as many months.

The artist, who is known for his ability to produce track after track and for his vast catalogue of unreleased work, is back with ‘Backlash’ and ‘The Tournament,’ two pieces that fit perfectly under Cirez D’s sound umbrella.

Both tracks ooze the type of driving, relentless and apothic techno that Eric has become known for producing under the alias.

The EP is out now on Beatport. You can listen to both tracks below:

Spotify In Talks To Acquire SoundCloud

SoundCloud Spotify Banner

Spotify is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire rival music service SoundCloud just months after the launch of paid streaming service SoundCloud Go.

According to information from the Financial Times, an official announcement on the subject could come soon. Spotify and SoundCloud representatives refused to comment when contacted by both the FT and Variety.

Although SoundCloud Go hasn’t captured many users, it’s the platform’s 175 million total user base that has ignited the interest of Spotify. Spotify is the current leader of the streaming market with more than 40 million paid subscribers, beating second-placed Apple Music who retains 17 million paid subscribers.

Other than their paid streaming service, Spotify and SoundCloud offer fairly different platforms for music streaming. Although the former dominates on established artist catalog size and number of subscribers, SoundCloud offers the perfect platform for any artist to upload their music, thus opening the door to a vast consumer base that Spotify right now does not strictly market to. While Spotify continues its dominance in subscribers and catalog size, SoundCloud serves as the ideal platform for emerging artists to upload their own music, remixes, and mixes, tapping into a vaster consumer base. Broadly speaking, SoundCloud’s catalog is far larger, providing 125 million tracks for streaming albeit from a far wider range of artists that includes unknown and up-and-coming musicians.

Despite the fact that SoundCould was alleged to be seeking a buyer for $1 billion, its last official valuation was at $700 million.

Anthont Attalla

In 2004 Harry “Choo Choo” Romero released What Happened, an EP on that came armed with a strong, dance floor-ready Dub remix of the same-title track by none other than Erick Morillo.

Featuring Jessica Eve on vocals, the same-title track “What Happened” was undeniably one of the hits of that year. Catchy and fast-packed, the minimal looped chunky track  was part of that signature sound that characterized the rising career of the one they called Choo Choo and his remixer for the occasion, Subliminal boss Erick Morillo.

Now, Incorrect Music chief Anthony Attalla has taken the track and given it a complete rework, the finished product already receiving major play by big-name DJs throughout the summer. While the catchy acapella remains,  Attalla’s power lays in the unmistakable and signature step and bounce he has added, as well as the sensual dreamlike melody that permeates the track before kicking back into full groove mode. The tech-heavy result is nothing short of fantastic: a dance floor-ready anthem that has been making people groove throughout summer in dance floors throughout the world.
