The BPM Festival Cancels Brazil Edition

The BPM Festival has posted a new statement following the deaths at Blue Parrot in Playa del Carmen on the last night of the festival earlier in January of this year.

“Our hearts are broken by the loss of six wonderful lives that were cruelly cut short,” begins the statement, naming all six victims killed during the shooting at the club that was hosting The BPM’s closing Elrow party. “The dance floor is where people come together to share joy, be with friends, create memories, and celebrate life. While our festival and dance community have experienced a tragedy, we’d also like to remember the magical moments, new friendships, and beautiful landscape of Mexico that we’ve all shared over the last 10 years.”

As part of the statement, The BPM Festival has announced that it will be canceling its plans for the inaugural Brazil edition of the event, plans that were announced during last month’s BPM Festival in Mexico and originally scheduled for April of 2017. The Portugal expansion plans, announced at the same time as those for Brazil but taking place in September of 2017, will continue.

The BPM Festival is not likely to return to Playa, as local Mexican officials there have banned the festival from taking place after 10 years of operation.

The victims of the tragedy were Rafael Penaloza Vega, Giovanni Arturo Amparan Saragossa (both of Mexico), Daniel Pessina (Italy), Alejandra Villanueva (USA) and two security staff, Kirk Wilson from Canada and Geovanni Francisco Ruiz Murillo (Mexico). Kirk Wilson was a well-known member of the Canadian nightlife scene as a respected doorman that had worked in the industry for years. A GoFundMe has been organized to support his family.

Permanent Memorial To Be Built At Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub

Pulse Nightclub memorial

It was with the heaviest of hearts that on June 12th the world learned of the mass shooting that took place at Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub, leaving 49 people dead and 53 wounded.

Just over a month later, the non-profit organization OnePulse Foundation has filed documents to gain permission to build a permanent memorial at the nightclub in the memory of the lives lost.

A few days after the shooting, club owner Barbara Poma voiced the idea of planning a memorial, later forming OnePulse on July 7th with a very precise goal: “conceiving, funding and construction of a permanent memorial on the existing Pulse site.”

There is no information yet on when exactly the memorial will be completed unveiled to the public.

50 Dead in Orlando LGBT Nightclub Mass Shooting

Pulse Nightclub via CNN

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a lone gunman entered Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and opened fire killing 50 and injuring dozens more.

The shooter entered the venue at around 2AM local time on Sunday morning, June 12th, firing at the crowd that numbered over 100. At first, reports indicated that the gunman took people hostage and used a number of explosive devices inside the venue, with police warning to steer clear from the area. By 5am local time, Orlando police confirmed that the gunman had been killed.

Located in the city’s downtown area, Pulse is one of the most popular LGBT venues of the entire Orlando area. Police have confirmed that the gunman was Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce Florida. According to law enforcement, Mateen had an assault rifle, a handgun and other explosive devices on him when he was killed by police.

This is now the deadliest mass shooting in US history, overtaking Virginia Tech in 2007 and Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, with 32 and 27 killed respectively.

It is also the second major shooting in Orlando to make international news over the weekend: on Friday night, 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie was killed as she was signing autographs after a concert. The gunman, 26-year-old Kevin James Loibl, then shot himself. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said he had declared a state of emergency for the city and has requested the governor do the same for the state.

As of writing, the police are evidently considering this as an act of domestic terrorism due to the large amount of victims. Law enforcement are also not ruling out the possibility that this is a hate crime specifically targeted at the LGBT community.
