Based in the UK city of Portsmouth, Reset Robot has previously released on labels including ranging from techno imprints such as Adam Beyer’s Drumcode and Scuba’s Hotflush to house focused labels such as Sasha’s Last Night On Earth and the iconic Mobilee Records.

Although he is well-known for his club tracks, this album is a chance for David Robertson aka Reset Robot to explore the more obscure side of his music taste, and the output in a synthesizer laden body of work that’s on a par with the seminal works of others such as Bicep and Burial.

Exploring brokenbeat rhythms, ambient textures and intricate melodies, this album is a thought-provoking selection that flows with a captivating suspense. Subdued and introverted, it’s got a lo-fi and dreamy aesthetic that occasionally lets fly into a dance floor orientated groove. “Chords N Thing”, “Single Coil” and “Waves” are both examples of this, but tracks like “How Deep”, “Crows” and “Unknown Unknowns” are at opposite ends of the same spectrum with their ambient moods.

The projects are often shrouded in secrecy, but in addition to his own music, Reset Robot also works behind the scenes with some of electronic music’s biggest names, and this album is testament to why so many trust his production skills.

DJ vs Live: In Conversation with Reset Robot

Since its inception in 2016, Alan Fitzpatrick has clearly started something with his imprint We Are The Brave – the selection of artists who have released on the label in the last 2 years shows his dedication to giving a home to the best underground music around for his loyal and dedicated fans. Club anthems come to mind, with tracks like Alan’s ‘We Do What We Want’, Gary Becks ‘Just One More’ and the recent smash hit ‘Poison’ from Croydon’s finest – Skream.

Portsmouth local and label mainstay Reset Robot has released 2 EP’s on the label back in 2018, and this month he brings us his second highly anticipated LP of his career: Spiral Of Silence. The release is a landmark one for the label, being the first album for We Are The Brave.

“With we are the brave approaching its third year of existence. It was inevitable that we would soon be approaching album territory. Personally, I can’t think of anyone better to kick off this milestone event than Reset Robot” –Alan Fitzpatrick

As with his first album, 2014’s Let Your Soul Outside on Truesoul, Reset Robot has allowed himself the creative freedom to paint outside of the rigid lines of club music, meaning alongside the dance floor bombs such as ‘Ramp’, ‘Meadow’, ‘Humankind’, and ‘Spiral of Silence’ there are delicate downtempo gems such as ‘Denial’, the sinister movie soundtrack of ‘Ana Strings’ and the epicness of the Nils Frahm vs M83 analogue love match ‘Freq’.

Moreover, this is an album that fits nicely with Reset Robot’s Live set, and listening to it in full confirms that to be the case. The timing isn’t a coincidence, as Reset Robot readies to embark on a Live tour in support of the album

On top of having the chance to premiere the fifth track of the album, “Kooshe,” 6AM sat down with Reset Robot for a chat to dissect his thoughts on DJ versus Live sets.

Premiere: Listen to “Rene” from Dubrovnik (UK) on 22 Digit Records

Following a release from Alland Byallo the new 22 Digit Records release is from Dubrovnik (UK), a fresh new talent based in the Scottish city of Glasgow.

Dubrovnik (UK) appears after a release on Flashmob’s self-titled label and this is only his third official release. Complimenting the two originals on this release is a remix from Reset Robot.

Reset Robot is famed for his seminal releases on Adam Beyer’s label Truesoul and Sven VĂ€th’s Cocoon, plus a recent debut EP on Anja Schneider’s imprint Mobilee. Not just a solo producer Reset Robot also regularly collaborates with Alan Fitzpatrick under the alias of Customer.

“Rene” is led by a thick lead pad which glides through the track’s stripped back percussion to provide its driving force. Chic in every sense of the word, this is a fine example of how less can so often be so much more. The structure is Techno influenced, but the style of the groove is more commonly associated with House music, making this dancefloor track the perfect hybrid.

Reset Robot’s remix of “Rene” keeps the originals minimalistic but adds his own subtle melody to replace the originals dominant lead synth. Building with complexity as the track develops, he adds sounds which create a more spacious sense of atmosphere. Deeper and more abstract than some might expect from Reset Robot, this intelligent remix shows off his versatility as a producer.

“Block” has a tough groove lead by a dominant kick drum and prominent clap sample. Murky and mysterious, a muffled synth stab and textured FX lay a foundation for the fragile melody to sit. Driven by the rich stabs of the polished lead sound, this club friendly track is the pinnacle of sophistication.

Tracklist:

01. Rene
02. Rene (Reset Robot Remix)
03. Block
