Finding and Winning Competitions for DJs and Producers

Guest post by Eric Louis

Whether you’re an aspiring DJ, producer or both, competitions are a great way to hone your craft and get noticed. The nature of competitions forces you to do two important things: you have a deadline so you have to get your work done in a set time frame, and you have to put something out there for the world to hear.

Winners of these competitions usually get a release on known labels and other prizes like Dj/production related software and hardware, as well as exposure that could translate into new bookings and opportunities.

The 12 (Possibly) Most Jaw-Dropping Radiohead Remixes Of All Time

Radiohead, a ban so iconic and yet often only superficially appreciated that many have failed to recognized how they were, for at least a large period of time, the world’s biggest political band — the word’s most woke band.

To understand Radiohead one has to know their roots. The band formed in 1985 at Abingdon School, an elite private institution in the heart of the English countryside county of Oxfordshire. Their privileged early life influenced the band in ways it wouldn’t with others: the five members — Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Ed O’Brien (guitar, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass), and Phil Selway (drums, percussion, backing vocals) — bonded over a common spirit of rebellion and radicalism, and translated those feelings to their music in impeccable fashion. The band’s anti-establishment roots further developed during the late 80’s period of indie expression, the same post-punk movement that took a decisive stance against Western (especially in Britain) conservatism and big corporation.

Free Download: CW/A ‘Disquieting’ (Metrist Remix)

Metrist

You may know CW/A as Italian producers Thomas Feriero and Francesco Leali, the minds behind Avatism, Clockwork and Opus 3000, as well as for their extensive release and remix list on labels such as Parachute, R&S, Decca and Vakant. In fact, they have been spearheading the work on Parachute in tandem with Life & Death chief DJ Tennis since 2013, all the while of course remaining prolific on the studio and on tour under their other aliases.

Last year they released their first full-length album, Words Unspoken, Acts Undone. Now, a special remix EP is being released on October 14th containing  two reworks of tracks from the album, courtesy of Parachute label-mate Metrist and Italian Workdiscs’ Simbiosi:

01. Disquieting (Metrist Remix)
02. Rainer Has No Shadow (Simbiosi Remix)

You can download the Metrist remix here via XLR8R.

CW/A are also on the cusp of releasing Ringleader. The duo drew inspiration from the current world concerns about mass surveillance and cyber spying, with Ringleader aiming to be “an audible interpretation of big data, ubiquitous connections and the acceptance of corporate and government spying.”

Out on December 16th, the album will contain the following original productions:

A1. BlatSting
2/A2. EligibleCandidate
3/A3. HiddenTemple
4/B1. ContainmentGrid
5/B2. 1212/DEHEX
6/B3. BPatrol

KiNK and Kölsch To Remix Two Sven VĂ€th Early 90’s Classics

accidentinparadise

Cocoon is set to release a two-track EP on April 15th containing remixes of timeless Sven VÀth tracks by none other than KiNK and Kölsch.

KiNK, top-notch Bulgarian producer listed as #1 on Resident Advisor’s poll for Best Live Acts of 2015, is poised to put his signature on 1992’s “Accident in Paradise,” while Kölsch is remixing “Robot” from the 1994 LP The Harlequin, The Robot And The Ballet-Dancer. Both tracks saw plenty of dance floor play at Omen, the Frankfurt club VĂ€th was part-owner of until its closure in 1998 and were originally released on Eye Q Records, the imprint he started together with Matthias Hoffmann and Heinz Roth.

Whereas KiNK’s influence turns “Accident in Paradise” into a true acid-influenced re-work, Kölsch’s product has a bigger more energetic sound. Both remixes clock in at well over 9 minutes without feeling drawn out.

You can listen to both clips on Wordandsound.
