Rebekah: The Problem With Being Labeled “The Queen of ________”

In an interview with Mike Boorman, techno producer and DJ Rebekah talks about her mental approach to life and to music, and how this has changed through the years.

She began as a socialite party girl on the Birmingham scene in the UK, undergoing years of transformation that eventually led her to become one of the most respected and sought-after techno artists in the world. Her ascension began when she caught the eye, and ear, of Chris Liebing and his CLR label, and hasn’t stopped since.

While CLR is pretty much a defunct label now, Rebekah has continued on with a heavy strong on releases, including her debut album on revered techno label Soma, and a heavy touring schedule that has seen her grace some of the most coveted DJ booths in the world.

In the interview, which you can listen to below, she discusses all of this as well as her creative rationale and whether gender debates are useful in this day and age. She gets real about real subjects, including the issue with “being labeled ‘the queen of …..” (insert given genre)’ and how it “implies that there can be only one and when women are already in a minority can breed competitiveness.” In a Facebook post on the subject she went on to say, “We really need to stamp this out, please stop comparing artists (who happen to be female) to one another, this is even more so ridiculous when the styles are not even the same.”

Listen to Movement Underground Stage 2017 Live Sets

Last week we covered how the return of techno to the Underground Stage at Movement Electronic Music Festival was a positive move that, in our eyes, elevated the festival experience to what we would expect out of the Movement brand.

The stage, which this year was hosted by Resident Advisor for the first time ever, was the home of artists the likes of drumcell, Rrose, Headless Horseman, Adam X and Perc, Ben Sims, DVS1 and many more.

RA has just released a selection of live sets from the weekend, which we present to you below:

Rebekah Hits Back To Accusations That She Is Faking Her DJ Sets

Another weekend has gone by and here we are again having to witness an artist having to provide rebuttals for accusations that they are faking their DJ sets.

While it’s not clear if the nature of the accusations are sexist in nature, we cannot deny that we have not seen it all before with Nina Kraviz, The Black Madonna, Nastia and others: the mansplaining and sexist comments of hundreds if not thousands who are quick to get to a keyboard to accuse female artists of not producing their own tracks or faking their DJ sets. This week it was the turn of Rebekah, and it wasn’t the first time she has had to defend herself either.

The British techno producer and DJ, who is in the midst of her Fear Paralysis Album Tour which sees her play live hybrid sets all over Europe and North America, had to take to her Facebook profile to fend off accusations of fake DJ sets. “So yet again it’s been brought to my attention that people think that I am fake djing in my sets. Firstly I will explain yet again that I play with Traktor with four channels open, to do this they are all beat gridded and synced, yes I use sync because I would rather spend time doing more interesting things like layering and quickly switching between tracks than beat matching, anyone says shit about this I will block you,” she began, before diving into a more in-depth explanation, complete with live video recording, exposing the lies behind the accusations received.

Discover Five DJs That Have Said “No” to Eating Meat

It is no secret that traveling takes a lot of energy out of touring DJs. Jet lag, lack of sleep, after-parties, airport delays and hours spent on planes definitely do not help, so it comes as no surprise that artists need to ensure they are well fed throughout their tours.

Yet, despite the often lackluster options of airport or plane food, there’s a selection of world-touring DJs who have not only continued to say “no” to meat and other animal products, but have provided useful tips on how to live on the road while maintaining a vegan or vegetarian diet.

It appears that the darkness of techno has no bearing on one’s dietary choices. In fact, our selection of five outspoken vegetarian/vegan DJs includes not one but three CLR recording artists.
