Mercia

UK Artist Mercia Makes City of Villains Sound Delightful

Mercia’sĀ latest EP is more wholesome than the title would lead you to believe. TheĀ Coventry-based artist’sĀ City of Villains isĀ a five track EPĀ exploring and reflecting his hometown within the setting of Breakbeat and UK Bass. “6am” starts off the exploration with ethereal atmospheres and lush piano before exploding into a full bodied breaks journey. 95 Bones’ remix follows this with a club ready acetate driven flip of the original which continues the story. The title track “City Of Villains” and Kiddah remix adds further spark to the package with a searing sub bass which is riddled with deep energy. The EP is rounded off by the bubbling and energetic “Hill Cross Flyover” which closes out this journey channeling how we’ve all been feeling this past year waiting for the return of the dance; it carries Strictly Rhythm influence and a prescient vocal motif.Ā

Hey Mercia! Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into music, and how long have you been producing music?Ā

Hi there. Hope you’re well guys! I’m a DJ/Producer from Coventry. Music has always been part of my life. My family forced me to do piano lessons from the age of ten (which now I’m thankful for) and then my brother was heavily involved in the London music scene when I was growing up which influenced my sound. I’ve probably been producing now for about eight years but never got around to actually finishing a project until Motoring Records started pushing music and promoting artists from Coventry.

What motivates your work as an artist?Ā

Listening to other artists and seeing people dance to your music.

What’s the sound of your city, Coventry?Ā

There is a lot of influences in Coventry as it is a melting pot of culture and heritage and I try to capture this into my music. Obviously the famous band The Specials began in the city but now artists like Pa Salieu are setting a precedent for new music coming out the City and I want to bring those influences together in electronic music.

Are there any artists who are currently inspiring your work?

Marc Brauner, David August, Barry Can’t Swim, and Ejeca.

Walk us through the inspiration behind your latest EP,Ā City of Villains?Ā

It really came out from lockdown and weirdly enough watching Breaking Bad sparked my inspiration to write. The project spanned over a twelve month period and I wanted it to exploreĀ and reflect on my home town and try to capture the mix of emotions about the City of Villains.Ā

If you could name one thing, what’s something you’re particularly proud of since starting this journey?

Being able to finish ideas off into a EP I’m proud of!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I run an event called Mono along with the Motoring label head. We have a Terrace party on April 30 in Birmingham at the Mill 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM.

Hannes Bieger is one of Europe’s most in-demand electronic music engineers turned star in his own right. Since stepping back into the light as an artist, he has released on leading labels like Bedrock Records, Poker Flat Records, Tronic and Awesome Soundwave, topped the Beatport Progressive House Chart, provided a guest mix for John Digweed’s legendary Transitions radio show and taken his scintillating, analog gear-heavy live show across, from D.Edge in Sao Paolo to Awakenings in Amsterdam to Watergate in Berlin.

Balance Music snares Bieger just as he begins his ascent into the uppermost echelons of dance music.Ā Bieger’s no-shortcuts approach to making wondrous melodic house and techno makes him an ideal candidate to provide a truly special mix for the long-running Balance Series.Ā Comprised of all-exclusive music from Bieger, his friends and collaborators, this mix capitalises on the fact that he was gearing up for another artist album. Instead, the music he’d been saving up for his next LP appears here, alongside music sourced from people has been working in tandem with in the studio.

“Balance presents Hannes Bieger” is out April 29 on BalanceĀ Music, you can pre-order here.Ā Ā

Steve Bug

Steve is a fantastic DJ and a great producer, but to me he is so much more than ā€œjustā€ that. His entire career to me is a role model of how to do things the right way. He was always in it for the good reasons, because he loves music, and he loves to dance. And he always stayed true to his ideals, never sold out for quick gains – Poker Flat is ā€œout of fashion since 1999ā€, and proudly so. It takes guts, morals and a good compass to be in the game for so long, to stay relevant for so long, and to build a platform for so many other artists as well. He supported me a lot – my first release after my long break was on Poker Flat, and my first ever live set as Hannes Bieger took place at one of his parties in Berlin. I’ve been mixing a lot of music for him in the past ten years, and he became one of my best friends. And he can still surprise me with his music. His 2021 release ā€œMontafonā€ is one of the best tracks he has ever made.

Cristina Mittermeier

With our planet in peril because of climate change, it is more important than ever to have passionate voices like the one of Cristina Mittermeier, the Mexican marine biologist and photographer. She is not only a fantastic artist who can capture the beauty of our planet and its inhabitants in incredibly vivid, moving and sometimes iconic pictures, she is also devoting her work to raising awareness for the environmental issues her subjects, and our planet at large, are facing today. When I was a kid, one of my dream jobs was marine biologist, and today I am quite an experienced photographer, too. In a different life I might be doing what she is doing, and I am eternally grateful that, in this life, she is sharing her view on this planet with a greater audience.

Pablo Picasso

To me, Picasso is not only one of the best painters and sculptors of all times, but also one of the most interesting artists in a wider sense of that word. After graduating from school, for a certain period of time, I wanted to become a painter too, and I applied at several art schools. In hindsight, it didn’t work out because the musician in me deliberately sabotaged the application process. I always thought I had to apologise for loving Picasso so much, because it’s such an obvious, almost ā€œboringā€ choice. But to me his career is monolithic. He started out on the most solid of foundations, painting like the old masters when he was a kid, and when he grew old he almost painted comic strips – and in between he reinvented himself several times, writing art history along the way. I find that especially the work of his blue and rose periods is ranging among the most touching pieces of art in any genre and at any time – and I quote and paraphrase him often during my mixing sessions and masterclasses, because his universal view on art holds so much wisdom even for musicians.

Adrian Utley

The guitarist, keyboarder and founding members of Portishead is probably one of the musicians with the most profound impact on my career. When I was 14, I started playing guitar in rock bands, and that was literally my life. But in 1993 or 1994 I listened to Portishead for the first time, and it struck me like a lightning. The first track I heard was ā€œStrangersā€ from the first Portishead album, and there really was a ā€œbeforeā€ and an ā€œafterā€. In a way, my interest in powerful guitar riffs and long solos was wiped out immediately. What I admire is that he can play so little and say so much with it – few notes, incredible expression, mindblowing analogue sound design… he changed my musical thinking forever!

Scotland’s Own Frazi.er Is Taking the Techno Scene by Storm

Scotland’s young shining, techno talent Frazi.er is pioneering the latest generation of clubbing fanatics. His uniquely raw, energetic sound has led to international recognition, intense touring and seminal releases on world renowned labels such as EXHALE.

Hailing from an industrious town in Central Scotland with a long history of deprivation, it’s fair to say there has been no shortage of music hungry admirers. Frazi.er’s experience focused club nights have become one of the most hard to grab tickets in his home country. None better tells this story than the Open To Close at SWG3’s ā€œGalvanizerā€ warehouse selling out two dates in 14 minutes, while fully crashing Resident Advisor.

When not throwing down at the hardest nights in Scotland, Frazi.er can be found at residencies at the infamous Subclub, Terminal V Festival, and SWG3.

Frazi.er is no stranger to big projects having shared decks with the likes of Dax J, Amelie Lens, Floorplan, Speedy J, SHDW and Obscure Shape to name a few. At just 26 years old he’s fast becoming one of the UK’s most sought after artists and in the mantra of his very own CONCEPT: ā€œThe Journey Continuesā€.

Hi Frazi.er! What and/or who inspired you to get involved in the electronic music scene?Ā

It was back when I was about 16 years old and went to a few house parties with my mate Nick’s big brother and his group of friends. I can remember asking ā€œwhat is this music?ā€. It turns out it was of course techno and I instantly fell in love with the relentless groove, so I started digging deeper into this sound. At the time I was listening to electro house and dance music.

Listen to Premiere: Frazi.er “No Regards for Humanity” – Crisis Of Man

Raw, dance floor techno. Good combo. What is your most memorable or favorite event to date?Ā

It’s actually my most recent rave, which was Dax J and Richie Hawtin at UNFOLD on a Sunday evening. This genuinely even blew the vibe in Berghain out the water for me. It’s one of the best vibes I’ve seen in a club and great to hear Richie playing around 150bpm, with tons of high energy stompers.

In one sentence, describe what it felt like when the RA website crashed because of your upcoming event.

F***ing crazy!

Your clothing line, OVOSI, is fire! If you had to choose, who are your top three fashion icons or brands?

Stone Island, A Cold Wall and Prada.

Besides running OVOSI, you also work with Chris’s House and The Homeless Project Scotland. Can you share more about these two organizations and your involvement with them?Ā

Where I’ve spent most of my time living was my hometown Motherwell. This region had one of the highest deaths by suicide in Scotland which was and still is pretty scary. I wanted to fully support Chris’s House and help raise awareness as there is a big stigma about guys not wanting to speak up about it. The Homeless project felt fitting as the charity event I was doing was around wintertime and it was important to keep people off the streets and sheltered during these even more life threatening times.

How do you balance your music career with your other interests and passions?

This is something I have always struggled with. My main focus is purely on my music, and I’ve had to make some tough decisions to cut back things on my clothing line to eliminate stress and not spread myself too thin. Working out regularly and eating good food is absolutely essential as well.

Do you have anything that you’re looking forward to in the near future?

Lots of exciting things in the pipeline, and all focused on putting on events with a forward thinking approach. But I can’t really divulge any details at this stage, so you’ll have to keep checking back for more announcements soon.

Anything else you’d like to share?Ā

My new TRANSPARENCY concept which is a visual show I’m launching in May and will be touring around Europe.Ā We just announced this last week and I am so excited about it. Hopefully I can bring the concept over to the U.S. in the not too distant future.

Meet The Ravers

Meet The Ravers: Shannon, Your Go-To for a Festival-Ready Body

One of the best parts about a rave is its anonymity. It’s a sacred space without status symbols. It’s you, the music, and other ravers. The only expectation is that you treat others with love and respect, and hopefully enjoy the music. Safe to say you’ve probably wondered who’s dancing next to you. What’s their name? What do they do? Let’s ask! Meet Shannon, part-time raver and full-time personal trainer.
