Zombies In Miami’s Top Spots For Underground Music In Mexico

Zombies are undead by nature but ZOMBIES IN MIAMI are very much alive and active. The DJ duo is a project created by Canibal & Jenouise. Despite the name, they are not crawling around Miami but shining out their light from Mexico. Over the last decade, the couple became one of the most prominent members of Mexico‘s vital electronic scene. Their sound can be described as a rhythmic and synth-driven house and techno hybrid. Along with a disco and Balearic twist, which is held together by the oh-so-sweet Italo Drama. You probably won’t find a better combination of Italo arpeggio lines, house pianos, disco drums as well as sun-kissed and mythical soundscapes for your summer soundtrack. 6AM Group spoke with the duo about the underground scene and their favorite party spots in Mexico. Here’s the breakdown. Catch them at the first-ever Departure Festival in Playa Del Carma.

Resources For American Artists and Nightlife Professionals Affected by COVID-19

Nightlife professionals and artists, you’re not alone. We have all been hit hard by the forced lockdown and closures mandated to combat COVID-19 and it sure seems like the next few months are not going to get any easier. Stay positive though, because together we must help one another to make it through all these obstacles thrown at us. It is with this in mind that we are sharing key resources for American artists and nightlife professionals affected by COVID-19 in this article.

In the last week and a half the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 has changed the way we live in unimaginable ways, and the nightlife scene in the United States, and our home in Los Angeles in particular, have been suffering since. While whole sectors of the local, state and country-wide economy are affected, there is no doubt that the entertainment, film, hospitality and nightlife industries are some of the worst-hit by the indefinite lockdown measures now in place to “flatten the curve” and mitigate the spread and death toll of the virus. We aren’t in a confirmed recession yet, but it will surprise no one once we officially are.

Proof of Nightlife’s Economic Impact: Berlin’s Clubbing Tourism Generated More than $1.58bn in 2018

Berlin is synonymous with partying, and for lucky techno lovers, a weekend in Berghain, often voted one of the best clubs in the world, is literally a pilgrimage that some wait and look forward to for years.

According to the Berlin Clubcommission, an association that campaigns for the interests of members of the Berlin club and party scene, roughly three million tourists came to the city in 2018 solely for the purpose of enjoying the clubs and nightlife that the city has to offer. The revenue generated by the city thanks to this totaled to $1.58bn in 2018 alone, proof of the economic benefits of nightlife for the city of Berlin and its residents.

The calculations are based on tourist board figures which indicate that one-third of all visitors to the city fall under the “club tourist” category, and that they spend an average of €205 or $231.60 per day, staying in the city for an average of 2.4 days each.

What is a DJ?

A DJ is art, passion, the soul of music, the dance floor shaker, a composer, the one with the secret weapon, the one who creates and interprets the soundtrack to your life, the artist who selects the right record at the right time, the fun of the party, a creator of trends, a continual learner, a lifestyle…

For DJs it all started in the United States when, back in the ’60s, they were tasked with putting on a record after the other. Back then the DJ didn’t own the records, rather they belonged to the owner of the club and the DJ came into the venue without any equipment and simply pieced together a set based off of what he was given. As the ’70s “Saturday Night Fever” began to spread with the explosion of disco, so did the role of the deejay, gaining more and more importance as the years went on. As anyone truly devoted to the history of electronic music knows, it was Dave Mancuso’s Loft that inaugurated the start of a new era, hosting the likes of Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Nicky Siano, Francois Kevorkian and Larry Heard who at that time were simple lovers of the garage sound of the past. The Warehouse in Chicago followed suit and the rest, as they say, is actual history. At the time DJs received pay that was equal to or lower that of a barman, yet were entrusted with the track selection of the entire night. Things have evolved drastically to what we have today when, since the 1990s, popular DJs became the idols of countless thousands who travel from city to city to see their favorite acts perform.

As a child growing up in Italy, whenever I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew older the response was always the same: a football player (soccer for those who want to say it wrong). I imagine that a lot of kids in the States grew up with similar dreams, dreams and desires that will never disappear from their head, but that may now be joined by another equally profitable and fun activity: the disc jockey, the entertainer of the masses.
