Digging Deeper with Audiojack

Leeds grown and Ibiza based, Audiojack are a duo who have built a sterling reputation over the last decade as DJs, producers, remixers and label owners. With music on labels the likes of 2020Vision, Hot Creations, Tsuba, Leftroom, Get Physical and Culprit and remixes on Moon Harbour, B-Pitch Control and Diynamic, there is no doubt that Audiojack are one of the current most respected producing acts amongst their peer.

The duo have been mainstays on Ralph Lawson’s 2020Vision recordings for over a decade where they released their debut album Radio, and several bestselling EPs including Get Serious and No Equal Sides. Audiojack also signed to Jamie Jones’ infamous Hot Creations label, debuting with the heavily played Vibrate EP, which features their good friend and vocalist Kevin Knapp on vocals; one of many collaborations between the transatlantic trio.

Running their own dance floor focused label Gruuv for over five years has provided an alternative home for their original music. EPs such as Stay Glued and These Days, which include their rework of Jaydee’s classic ‘Plastic Dreams’ were received to critical acclaim. The label has also garnered a reputation for nurturing the best talent, new and old, and counts Emanuel Satie, David Mayer, Marc Romboy, Dachshund, Hugo, David Pher, A1 Bassline, Hermanez and Black Loops amongst its regular releasing artists.

More recently the duo have enjoyed musical outputs on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, as well as the revered mobilee imprint of Anja Schneider and Ralf Kollman. We caught up with Audiojack as they were in the midst of their U.S. tour with a stop in our home city of Los Angeles.

Digging Deeper with Kevin Over

Although only 25 years old, Kevin Over is an old music soul in a young man’s body. He’s been obsessively collecting music since he was 13, cutting his teeth at Important Records, the store in Essen, Germany, co-owned by Vladimir Ivkovic, who he rates as his biggest earlier influencer/educator. That comes to no surprise to anyone who knows Ivkovic, manager at Desolat and a Dekmantel regular, among other things.

Kevin Over’s major breakthrough came in early 2015 when the stunning Retrovision EP dropped on Noir Music. Detroit legend Stacey Pullen licensed his stunning “2002” for his well- received Balance 028 compilation, and the warmth of the ‘90s embosses the artist’s musical output, as Kevin creates rough-edged, groove-ridden dance floor weapons that appeal to house and techno heads.

Over the ensuing years, he’s made it his mission to learn and dissect 20 years of music culture and channel it into his productions. His music is a sample heavy brand of house and techno, which draws on garage, funk, soul and disco influences – everyone from Roy Ayres and Funk D’void to The Streets.

You can really feel all these influences in the new Back to Back release for mobilee, an ‘album’ of original tracks, remixes and Kevin’s own tracks remixed by his favorite artists such as Soulphiction, Jacob Korn and Marquis Hawkes.

6AM had a chance to talk with Kevin extensively in occasion of this most recent release, which can be purchased via Beatport.

The brainchild of Anja Schneider and Ralf Kollmann, mobilee records has been around for 11 years now. The project founded in Berlin blurs the boundaries of dance music’s more underground genres, bridging the gap between familiar and innovative soundscapes with effortless precision.

Perhaps unexpectedly what begun as a label has since grown into much more: a hub for music, well-curated events and artist management that is able to incorporate the past, the present and the future of house and techno under one uniformed umbrella. If you take a look at mobilee records’ extensive discography you will find releases from names such as Solomun, Maya Jane Coles, Audiofly, Miss Kittin, Pan-Pot and Nicole Moudaber sprinkled in between a list of mobilee core-team producers the caliber of Rodriguez Jr., Lee Van Dowski, Re.You, Customer aka Alan Fitzpatrick & Reset Robot, And.Id, Gel Abril and Ray Okpara.
