State of Flow: Markantonio

“Flow” is a scientifically recognized state of mind where a person is completely focused and immersed in what they’re doing- All time seems to stop, the whole world seems to disappear, and the person is performing and creating at their peak levels. Top performance athletes, engineers, and especially your favorite music artists all try to do whatever they can to achieve the State of Flow. Although everyone has their own method to achieve “flow”, factors such as creative workspaces, learning beyond their craft, physical/mental well-being, feedback/self-evaluation on work, and resting time- help all artists create their best work.

With a career that spans over two decades, Markantonio is considered one of Italy’s most accomplished electronic music artists. He shares with 6AM how he achieves key factors to get to a State of Flow for his projects including AnalyticTrail Records, MKT Records, and Casamia Music (aka C.\SAMIA) as the owner and director, and especially for his recent Neapel EP that was released on September 30th, 2022 (Friday) and is now available to purchase.

Jeff Derringer

Jeff Derringer in Full Force With EP and Positive Energy

Since 2010, Jeff Derringer has released his unique brand of techno on such high-powered labels as Electric Deluxe, Soma, and Perc Trax, while touring the world behind his sound. His Oktave events have been a staple of Chicago’s Smartbar for the last dozen years, and have helped build a resurgence in the Windy City’s techno scene.

In 2018, Jeff went on medical hiatus and soon found himself in the ambiguous swamp of the Covid pandemic. After passing through the gauntlet of the last four years undaunted, Jeff has returned with an exciting new direction. The three tracks on Automatic are no-nonsense shots across the bow, built for club devastation; fast-paced, analog-steeped beats made, as Jeff describes it, with as little equipment as possible. Jeff’s Automatic EP is the fifth release on the label Oktave Records, a label that started in 2017 as an offshoot of Jeff Derringer’s long-running event series at Chicago’s Smartbar nightclub.

Reaching New Heights With Krista Bourgeois

Born in Las Vegas and raised in Southern Oregon, Krista Bourgeois first became acquainted with music when she took piano lessons as a child. As a young adult, she picked up the cello but was constantly told that music would never offer her a suitable career. It was only in college that she took a leap of faith and quit studying computer science to pursue a degree in music production and audio engineering instead.

Unconventional methods have shaped Krista’s output. Her industrial soundscapes often degrade into raw and dystopian textures. As a producer and DJ, she simply works to challenge herself, her audience, and the status quo. OBSKUR MUSIC, TRUANT.J, and Soma Records are among the record labels that champion her discography.

The Science Behind Your Love of House and Techno

We’ve all been there — you’re vibing heavy into a techno track with heavy bass, consistent synthesizers, and hypnotizing elements. All the while, the mix is more than just a good tune, it’s something that truly makes a dreary day into a positive one- or a boring day into one that is more tolerable.

Why is that? Well, there’s actually a science to it believe it or not and there are many reasons as to why house and techno music makes our brains feel amazing.

Get Out of Your F*cking Head: Tough Love on Mental Health

Earlier this month I picked up a book by the famous R&B rapper, Russ, titled “Get out of your way – it’s all in your head” – I decided to remix his book title as the title of this post to draw your attention on this matter. In the United States, May is mental health awareness month and at the tail of this month, I need to stress that this awareness needs to be addressed as often as possible (not just one month) in the culture we live in today, especially with this current climate.

Research Suggests Music Improves Mental Health and Wellbeing

Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open suggests music improves mental health and wellbeing. After reviewing 26 studies across several countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the research showed that music may provide a clinically significant boost to mental health. Whether participants sang, played or listened to music in the studies, the analysis showed that the mental health benefits were nearly the same as exercise and weight loss. Future research is needed to confirm the findings, however, the results prove promising for music lovers around the world.

“All of us are experts in music because we’ve spent thousands of hours listening to music, codifying it in our brain and responding to it. Is it any wonder what when we listen to music, something remarkable happens?”

Kim Cunio, an associate professor and convener of musicology at the Australian National University, who was not involved in the research.

Colorado Decriminalize Mushrooms

Colorado Might Be the Next State to Decriminalize “Magic” Mushrooms

It wasn’t just the painful tumors or medication that made Alan Floyd sick. It was the idea that death could come at any time, a brutal fact of his condition that came to dominate his days and grew into night terrors during his sleep.

“It was this monstrous, impending doom of death hanging over me,” Floyd said.

But Floyd found a way to interrupt the cycle of rumination and fear by experimenting with “magic” mushrooms. He’s one of many patients and spiritual seekers in Colorado who have sought healing and relief from mushrooms and other psychedelic substances, despite a federal prohibition.

Although recent research showing the healing potential of these drugs has spurred renewed interest, mushrooms and naturally derived psychedelics like mescaline, ibogaine, and dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, have been used by people for centuries. It’s only in the past 50 years that they were considered illegal.

Ketamine

Ketamine as Potential Treatment for Depression, Anxiety & Chronic Pain

The taboo party drug ketamine is being hailed as a potential treatment for depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. Since the 1970s ketamine has been legally prescribed in the United States as an anesthetic. Due to the drug’s dissociative and hallucinogenic effects, it’s become a popular rave culture drug. Other psychedelics such as LSD or MDMA cannot be legally prescribed because there are no medically recognized health benefits.

An easing of prescription rules during COVID-19 has allowed more Americans to access the drug through their doctors for at-home mental health treatments. Some have hailed the drug as a breakthrough therapy for depression and other mental health conditions. Others remain skeptical because there is little evidence to support how effective ketamine is for depression. There are limited large-scale studies of ketamine’s medical impact, leaving some to also conclude that an unregulated boom of the drug could result in tragedies and a regulatory crackdown.
