This past weekend one of the world’s biggest electronic music brands, Germany’s Time Warp, returned to the United States after a four-year hiatus.
The anticipation was worth the wait for the several thousand North American electronic music fans who poured into The Bronx in New York City for the two-night festivities organized in liaison with local promoter Teksupport. In the 25 years since Time Warp was founded in Mannheim, Germany—where it celebrated its quarter-century birthday earlier in the year—the festival has consistently set a golden standard for immersive stage production and an equally mind-blowing lineup. Throughout the years the festival has hosted the who’s who of techno, house, tech house and minimal, from heavyweight names that have shaped the history of underground electronic music across several decades, to up-and-comers and future leaders of their respective sounds.
From August 7th to 10th, Neopop Festival returns to Viana do Castelo to host some of the most exciting names in electronic music for an eclectic programme spanning two stages and four nights.
The festivities will once again take place just a few meters from the Atlantic Ocean in the breathtaking setting of Viana Do Castelo – the jewel of the Costa Verde. This historic location in the Minho Region of Northern Portugal is just a 30-minute drive from Porto Airport, boasting views of the Lima River and local foods that are guaranteed to make your trip unforgettable.
On March 16th, Los Angeles will see the return of Maceo Plex as part of his Mutant Tour.
Hosted by Insomniac’s Factory 93 event series, the day-into-evening event will take place from 3pm until 11pm at the event series property located at 1756 Naud St in Chinatown.
It’s not easy to talk about electronic music, and especially so when the genres in question are house and techno, mostly instrumental and oftentimes devoid of lyrics.
The lack of vocals make it easy to get lost in a sea of technical adjectives and meaningless explanations. We should let the music do the talking, sure, but what about the producers and DJs… what do they think?
We have collected ten of our favorite DJ quotes from some of the best producers, DJs, record label owners and promoters in the game:
New year, new concept: Maceo Plex locks down 2018 with a Fabriclive mix and his new Mutant series, that sets out to explore the more mutated side of his signature cosmic techno further than ever before.
The Mutant series which will consist of a handful EP’s released on Friends’ labels as well as on his own Ellum imprint. You may recall his last run of dark eclectic beats and entrancing melodies like Conjure Dreams, Conjure Balearia, Conjure Superstar, Conjure Floyd and Conjure Sex to name a few. This year we get techno mutations. The mutant series is Maceo’s take on mutating sounds, melodies and emotions. Each song has a centralized theme that he has mutated and distorted to make his own and is nothing short of immaculately produced jams. The first EP of the series Mutant
1 is set to release on friend Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondent label in May, marking the Launch of what will surely be a much desired release series.
Framework, one of Los Angeles’ leaders in underground electronic music for over 5 years, has announced its Coachella party programming for the 2018 season. Framework has earned its name through a forward-thinking approach to music booking and will be bringing its curatorial prowess to the fore, soundtracking the Desert’s biggest weekend with some of house and techno’s most respected names.
Before he became known as Maceo Plex, American DJ and producer Eric Estornel started out as the mysterious Mariel Ito. As Mariel Ito, he was active during the early 2000s and gained popularity thanks to Estornel’s experimentation on electro sounds. He delivered a bunch of releases under this moniker during 2005 and 2006 including an EP on Modern Love and an album on SCSI-AV, to name a few.
Now, 12 years after his last release on Modern Love, Estormel returns to his electro alias Mariel Ito as he is set to release an album on R&S Records and an EP on his imprint Lone Romantic, the imprint he launched with the recent Maceo Plex LP ‘Solar’ in summer 2017.
Maceo Plex is asking for the dance community to get involved in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the wake of last week’s disturbing events there which have seen Trump-supporting Nazis and the Ku-Klux-Klan rally and spew hate in the name of white supremacy.
The rally, which was met with counter-protests by those standing for equality and human rights, resulted in three deaths as of today, including that of a young 32-year-old paralegal who was ran over by a 20-year-old Nazi who drove his car into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters. At least 19 others were injured by the vile actions of the now-identified Ohio man, who remains in custody and charged with second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of failing to stop.
The voices in the dance music community that spoke about the events and the tragedy were many, with producers, DJs and other notable members of our scene speaking up to denounce the world and ideology of Nazism and white supremacy in today’s America, and with many taking a stance against President Donald Trump and his failure to even acknowledge the problem in Charlottesville. Despite the overwhelming evidence at his disposal, Trump failed to call a spade a spade, refusing to use the term “Nazis” or “white supremacist” during his speech, instead taking a middle avenue and using general terms to condemn “this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence, on many sides.”
Maceo Plex, however, is standing up against it and has an idea on how to get involved. In a tweet posted today he calls for dance music to come together to promote and dance for unity and peace, and to fight the Donald Trump-supporting Nazis in Charlottesville.
Let’s do a free party in Charlottesville to promote & dance for unity & equality, and fight those @realDonaldTrump supporting neo nazi’s.
