Q&A: Defected Presents Franky Rizardo In The House

Long tipped as an artist to watch, Franky Rizardo has of late firmly established himself as one of house music’s leading lights. With a weekly national radio show in his homeland and a touring schedule taking him across Europe, the Americas, Australasia and beyond, the unassuming Dutchman’s reputation has snowballed with every release, culminating in his recent smash ‘Same Man’, a stick of devastating dance floor dynamite with an unmistakable hook which has tenaciously topped Beatport’s tech house chart for several weeks. Now, his stunning contribution to Defected’s ‘In The House’ mix series cements his position alongside some of the world’s greatest DJs.

Defected presents Franky Rizardo In The House is built upon the firm foundations of Franky’s own productions, including ‘Same Man’, ‘Keep Cool’, his rework of Roger Sanchez’ ‘Morning Prayer’ and a host of brand new tracks and exclusive remixes. Cuts like ‘Work It To The Bone’ and ‘Crazy Day’, and his remixes of chart-topper Jax Jones’ ‘House Work’ and rising starlet Anabel Englund’s ‘London Headache’ – all exclusive to this compilation – typify Franky’s ability to pair infectious vocals with driving dynamics. With an ear for tomorrow’s timeless classics, like Laolu’s remix of Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra ‘Too Much Information’ and Midland’s ‘Final Credits’, Franky also shows off his technical ability, mashing up numerous tracks and accapellas across the two carefully-constructed 70-minute mixes. The result is a compelling collection of contemporary house music, brought together by one of the world’s most exciting proponents of the genre, and available for pre-order it here.

6AM spoke to Franky right in the middle of a World Tour that is seeing him visit Australia, Asia, the U.S. and of course Europe:

Sian: Bridging The Gap Between Techno and Hip-Hop

Classic modern techno, that’s likely to be the sound you think of whenever you hear of Sian and his Octopus Recordings imprint. The Los Angeles-based label owner, producer and DJ has made a name for himself running one of the strongest techno labels in the world, with releases coming from respected artists the likes of Jay Lumen, Oliver Koletski, Julian Jeweil, Enrico Sangiuliano, Gregor Tresher, Noir and many more.

To this day, Sian’s own productions have been to this day a further testament to the quality of Octopus’ output. Intelligent leftfield techno that strives to walk away from generic big-room sounds while remaining palatable to those in the midst of crossing the bridge to the “underground.”

Sian’s latest project, however, is very different from what you may be used to from him. On Monday April 10th the Irish-born artist is releasing Capital Crimewave, fearlessly transcending those invisible boundaries between warehouse techno, urban hip-hop, mind-bending acid, dubbed-out electronics and countless other future genres in between. The massive 20 track LP sees Sian bring together his love for hip-hop and techno, binding together his diverse catalogue of machine-made sounds into one cohesive audio experience that is unlike anything previously released on Octopus. For the project, he is joined by guest vocalists such as AG Fernandez, bringing together artistic minds for the creation of this brand-new atmospheric and murky late-night journey.

6AM had the chance to sit down with Graham and AG before Miami Music Week, taking the opportunity to discuss the album and the bridge that they hope will bring techno and hip-hop closer together. Capital Crimewave is available for pre-order via Beatport.

Christian Gerlach Talks California and Lanthan.audio’s Upcoming 10th Release

We met Lanthan.audio founder Christian Gerlach right before his Los Angeles debut for LA Structures, where he shared the bill with Developer, Ascetic Limited’s Motionen, Symtek, Sarah Strandberg and Jeremy Sena. And what a debut it was, the packed room lapping up every single second of his set, proving once more that LA’s love for techno keeps on growing and knows no boundaries.

Christian’s own releases and that of his label pack a definite punch, forming up the perfect puzzle pieces for techno journeys like the one the packed Los Angeles room got to witness that night. Christian’s relationship with Los Angeles began with his contribution to Ascetic Limited’s second EP outing, a mini-compilation that also included tracks from Dorian Gray, Deepbass and HOBI, and will continue when the LA label’s founders Motionen release on Lanthan.audio in the coming months.

We had the chance to talk to Christian following his set to find out more about his trip in California and his future plans, as his label readies for its milestone 10th release.

Bastian Bux Explores His Connections With Elrow, Suara and Upcoming Gigs in Chicago and New York City

We catch Bastian Bux hot on the heels of his debut Miami Music Week gig for elrow and right as he readies for gigs at Chicago’s Spybar and New York City’s Wesbter Hall this coming weekend. Bastian is on a mini-US tour alongside Coyu, the boss of the imprint that he calls home. Bastian’s production debut came with his Stay EP on Suara, where four timeless tracks laid the foundations of what Bastian Bux means today: deep and emotional techno, dark house, and high class electronica. Such was the success of the debut that, a few months later, he repeated on Coyu’s imprint with Teardrop EP, Screenshot, Tresor and his more recent Oracle EP, where his stylistic range extended further, going from futuristic deep house to progressive techno. After taking his first step into remixing, reworking Habischmann’s “All I Dream” for Dave Seaman’s Selador imprint, Bastian’s next outing came Nicole Moudaber’s esteemed label MOOD Records.

In front of a crowd, Bastian is able to travel elegantly from housey grooves to rough techno, going through epic melodies and sober beats, always loyal to his way of understanding music but without losing sight of the dance floor. That ability has earned him the status as a new resident for elrow, one of the most important brands in Europe, based in Barcelona and Ibiza, and has seen him tour the globe. After his summer residency at Space Ibiza and having played in the UK, Germany, France and Dubai, the future looks bright for this new, up and coming wonder-kid.

Techno Viking

What Happened to the Techno Viking?

I have asked myself this question before, and I am sure countless others have too: whatever happened to the Techno Viking?

It was the year 2000 and on the streets of the Fuckparade in Germany a topless raver became an international sensation. Despite being immortalized in a four-minute video that went viral and was ultimately made into a myriad of memes reaching cult status, The Techno Viking remained anonymous for the majority of the years following the event.

Q&A and Premiere: Daniel Boon Releases Debut Album “Boon & Bane” on Neuhain Recordings

Boon & Bane is an exciting long player of Berlin techno DJ/Producer, Daniel Boon, a highly intelligent man who likes to think outside the box, creating a unique blend of underground sounds. His long-awaited first album which have been carefully built over the last year, reveals Daniel Boon’s widely rich musical identity through 10 awe-inspiring tracks!

The debut album comes out comes out on his own imprint Neuhain Recordings, a techno label with recent releases from David Ternessi, Crazy
Sonic and Superstrobe. Boon is responsible for numerous parties throughout Berlin in the late ’90s and early to mid 2000s, including club nights at the legendary old Tresor club and the now closed Maria Am Ostbahnhof. Furthermore Boon also founded Ostfunk Records with Oliver Tatsch in 2005 which became one of Berlin’s leading techno labels.

Boon & Bane is an exploration of textures. Each track has its own sonic character whether that’s the growling rumbles in “Fade Array” or the noise explosions in “Inside Symmetry”. The percussion is warm and expertly laid, often within the form of polyrhythms. “Demand Echoes” for example
bleeps in and out while carrying a crunch of a clap which is a welcome theme throughout. The reverse synth percs in Fallback Audio show Boon’s minimalistic calibre while tracks like “Rattle Blade” and “Shadow Forecast’s” vocal-use give rave nostalgia. “Humo Routine” sticks out as a garage house influenced shuffle techno hybrid with a wobble-esque bassline, perfectly giving the middle of the album a breath.

We spoke to Daniel ahead of the forthcoming release, from which we are also premiering “Rattle Blade”

Q&A and Premiere: Ennio Colaci Releases “Stereoscope” EP on Berlin’s Dreiklang

“Stereoscope” is Ennio Colaci’s debut on Berlin’s Dreiklang, following the label’s characteristic triangular composition with Tadeo and David Hausdorf remixes completing the EP package. Having had their first release in 2015, Dreiklang marks their third record after releases from Edit Select and Och. It comes from Italian producer Ennio Colaci who produces alongside the owner of Bosconi Records, Fabio Della Torre, under the alias Minimono.

Ennio’s Stereoscope steers away from Minimono’s disco flavored house orientated sounds, bringing a warm palette of textures in the form of soft noise, percs, dubby delayed chords and a sub kick and bass relationship reminiscent of early dub techno records. Alongside the title track there are two remixes from David Hausdorf and Tadeo. Tadeo roughens Stereoscope up and introduces a more techy sound, while David Hausdorf dries up the original, moving the focus to the dub chord.

Stereoscope on Dreiklang is a 180g, vinyl only release surfacing in handcrafted record sleeves by Berlin based artist Nils Altland on the 14th of March 2017. 6AM had a chat with Ennio in honor of the release and premiere of the title track, which you can listen to below.
