Digging Deeper with POPOF

Deeperfect’s Synaptic EP is a collaboration effort from two heavy hitting producers. Form label boss, POPOF, is a bonafide legend in the underground house and techno scene. He has been pumping out hits for more than ten years on the most important and genre defining labels, such as Cocoon, Truesoul, Bedrock and Hot Creations. On the other side of this meeting of creative minds is Stefano Kosa, an up-and-coming talent from Milan who has made a big name for himself with his music on important labels like Stereo Productions, Elrow and of course POPOF’s label Form.

One of the most downloaded artists in his category, POPOF is in very high demand for his remixes and has worked for famous artists such as Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Moby, Booka Shade, Vitalic, Tiga, Maetrik, Martin Solveig and many more.

We took the occasion to sit down with the Parisian to talk about the EP and the whirlwind summer he is having.

Life Outside the Studio with Wehbba

In many ways, it’s difficult to believe Wehbba only dropped his first full-length EP on Drumcode this year. Released in February, the four-tracker Eclipse was a monster statement piece of the Brazilian’s talents and followed on superbly from ‘Fake’, his contribution to last year’s A-Sides Vol.6 – inarguably one of the biggest tracks on the compilation.

With the confirmation that Wehbba would take part in Drumcode’s Off Week party in Barcelona, followed by the brand’s takeover of Resistance in Ibiza, it’s indisputable proof that his crisp, chord-driven take on techno has become a vital component to the expansive palette of sound Adam Beyer has drawn for the label in 2018 and beyond.

His latest EP on Drumcode, Catarse, marks the rapid-fire follow-up from the prolific producer. Opening with the eerie ‘She Lost Control’, Wehbba says he took inspiration from the Joy Division track of almost the same name (‘She’s Lost Control’), but instead of crafting the dense sonic atmosphere with vocals, he employs an analogue kick drum and stealth-like moog bass with dramatic results. ‘Process’ follows, a cut which begun as a cover jam of Laurent Garnier’s ‘Crispy Bacon’ and ends up incorporating the cut-up vocals of legendary minimal composer Steve Reich, who is one of Wehbba’s chief inspirators. The resulting track is an ice-cool percussive work that’s rich in dancefloor functionalism. The title track will be familiar to many who follow Drumcode Radio, a goose-bump inducing highlight of Beyer’s DCR392 at Awakenings in Eindhoven, ‘Catarse’ is driven by a memorable melodic riff resplendent in 90’s techno euphoria. The EP concludes with the terrific ‘Mind Awake’, a powerful concoction of reverb heavy basslines and glitchy effects, that’s been thoroughly road tested by both Beyer and Wehbba and kicks like a rodeo bull.

With a Los Angeles gig coming up as part of his North American tour and this massive EP now out, we took the time to chat with Wehbba and ask him one simple question: “What are five things you like to do when not touring or working in the studio?”

Enjoy his answers below.

Giorgia Angiuli: “I Love Cute and Little Things and I Think That Beautiful Objects Can Produce Beautiful Sounds”

Born in Puglia, also known as the heel of Italy’s boot, Giorgia Angiuli is a classically trained musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. Very early on she developed a strong interest for electronic music and started to experiment with new live techniques. From her very first project in 2009 MetĂčo, where she released the album “Toyshop,” Giorgia has created a vibrant, unique and interactive performance for her fans.

In 2010 with her audio visual project We Love, Giorgia collaborated with the renown label Bpitch Control, performing in clubs internationally allowing her presence to grow which eventually led her to go solo in 2013.  The solo project of Giorgia Angiuli stylistically moves between pop, techno and house. She uses her voice to create a dreamy dimension intensified by the use of unique toy instruments. During her set she combines keyboards, drum pad and theremin with the sounds of a toy flute, sax, trumpets and many other toys. Mixing all of these samples and loops she shapes a vibrating and energetic groove that sets the dance floor on fire.

From 2013 to the present Giorgia has had success releasing on some of the biggest labels, Stil vor Talent, Crosstown Rebels, Kindisch, Kevin Saunderson’s legendary techno KMS, Harry Klein, Einmusika, Systematic and Suara to name few. In 2018 her new EP “No Body No Pain” released on Stil Vor Talent.

The start of 2018 saw Giorgia tour in Europe, Australia and South America.  She will also hit the European summer festival circuit playing at Aquasella in Asturias Spain, Kappa FuturFestival in Italy, Fusion in Germany, Pleinvrees in Amsterdam, Rock’n Solex Festival in Rennes, Audioriver in Plock, Sueno Open Air in Aix En Provence.  At the end of May 2018, Giorgia will embark on her first US tour playing at some of the best venues such as Output in NYC, Union in Los Angeles, SpyBar in Chicago, The Great Northern in San Francisco, Théùtre Fairmount in Montreal, Treehouse in Miami and Here I love You in El Paso to name a few.

It was during this last U.S. tour that we spoke to her to learn more about her love for toys and the incredible way she has been making music.

Digging Deeper with Demi aka ASOY

At their height, SOS were one of the original power trios in electronic music. Long before the likes of Apollonia (or dare we say, those wretched Swedish characters arrived on the scene), these guys were throwing it down in some of the world’s best nightclubs week after week, and even contributed to the Essential Mix as far back as 2006.

Although the boys have since gone their separate ways, Demi, Omid 16B and Desyn are all still active in electronic music – with Demi in particular a busy man of late. Now producing under a new, more techno-focused alias, ASOY he’s arguably making the best music he’s made for quite some time.

We caught up with him recently for an extensive, thought-provoking and always interesting chat. Without further ado, here’s what went down

Digging Deeper with Fred Everything

Summer is looking glorious for Canada’s Fred Everything, and not only thanks to the release of his new LP.

Long Way Home marks Fred’s fourth artist album, and the first to be released on his own label Lazy Days Recordings. Out June 21, 2018, the album indicates his return to his hometown of Montreal, after 8 years in San Francisco, and also marks a come back to the LP format after ten years.

For the first time, each track was produced in Fred’s home studio, which provided an ideal environment for the revisiting of musical styles that Fred had not been able to explore on EP and Remix formats. The twelve-track album travels through a variety of tempos and rhythms, including broken and electro beats, a clear ’80s disco influence, as well as dub, all embraced by a balearic/coastal feel, inspired by recent travels to Mallorca, Ibiza and Croatia.

Collaborators on the album include Sio from South Africa; who Fred remixed last year on Atjazz Records Company, Jinadu from the UK; known for his many collaborations including Searching produced by Fred in 2015, which became a big hit thanks to the Deetron remix, Franky Selector; an old friend and collaborator from Montreal on vocoder duty and Hot Toddy (Crazy P) who added guitar on the summery disco number “Same Old Sound.” Lauer (Tuff City Kids), Andre Lodemann and Ian Pooley have all  been confirmed for remix duties for the singles.

Following our premiere of one of the remixes from the album, we decided to have a more in-depth chat with Fred to find out more about his time in San Francisco, the reasons behind his move back to Canada and what this album really means to him both personally and artistically.

Following their spellbinding Somerset EP on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, the ever-momentous GHEIST unveil a brand new label project, Radau, which they are launching alongside their single entitled “Frequent Tendencies.”

Their own label, built with no creative boundaries, Radau is a playground where the Berlin quartet remove all limits and expectations and dig deep into the mindset and experimentalism that united them in the first place.

With plenty more music due on both Radau and beyond, it seems GHEIST’s impeccable acceleration over the last two years will continue for a long time to come. It is for this reason that we decided that this was the perfect time to speak to the four artists and dig deeper into what they’re all about.
