In Interview with Marc Romboy Ahead of San Diego Debut at CRSSD After Dark with Maetrik

This coming Saturday, March 2nd, Marc Romboy will be landing in San Diego for the first time to perform at one of CRSSD Festivals’ signature After Dark parties.

Taking place at Spin, the event will see the veteran French producer and DJ join Maceo Plex’s techno alter-ego, Maetrik, for what we believe is the ideal way to close out the first day of this year’s CRSSD Spring edition.

Over the course of the last twenty-plus years, German born DJ, musician and composer Marc Romboy has become synonymous with a soulful electronic music sound that has taken him all over the world. As well as releasing on only the most influential labels, from Innervisions to Ovum and Kompakt to 20:20 Vision, he is also the sole mastermind behind the influential Systematic Recordings label and has been since 2004.

Nowadays an album specialist, 2006 saw him release his debut album, the captivating „Gemini” whilst in 2017 Marc released his first listening long player called „Voyage de la planĂšte“, a pure electronica album with classical music influence and later, in summer 2017 the live recording of his collaboration with the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra called „Reconstructing Debussy“, in cooperation with Boiler Room hit the stores.

Despite being a key player for so long, Marc is still as relevant as ever and remains right at the sharp end of electronic music. Proof of that comes in the form of his DJ schedule, which takes him from Fabric to Womb and Berghain to Watergate, as well as to not one but three separate Boiler Room shows. All three proved Marc to be a dexterous performer who never relies on obviousness or gimmicks, instead telling truly musical stories that place dancers right at the heart of the action.

San Diego and CRSSD attendees are in for a treat on Saturday night, and we saw this as the perfect opportunity to catch up with Marc.

Label Spotlight: Marco Faraone and Norman Methner’s UNCAGE

UNCAGE is a Florence and Berlin-based label run by Marco Faraone and Norman Methner releasing house and techno with focus on the dancefloor, but also paying attention to the more esoteric soundscape of techno.

The label has been introducing the world to heavy-hitting releases from established artists and up-and-comers alike, showcasing Marco and Norman’s skills as selectors for this special project. On the label’s roster we find names such as Radio Slave, Nick Höppner, Marcel Fengler, Donato Dozzi and Markus Suckut, but also artists such as Kas:st, Skudge and Deepbass — all of which is testament to the breadth of techno the label wants to introduce to the world.

While the music on UNCAGE may fit a wide array of techno soundscapes, the focus remains on quality above all else. When we set our eyes on the label and decided to speak to Marco and Norman, we discovered that UNCAGE is on the cusp of a massive 2019, with releases from Reformed Society, Bambounou, Mark Broom, Efdemin and more either already out or in the pipeline.

In fact, Reformed Society’s Bend The Wave came out just this past Friday, 22nd February, including a Bambounou Remix which you can stream below before reading our exclusive interview with label chiefs Marco and Norman.

In Interview with Lewis Fautzi

Portuguese techno producer Lewis Fautzi drops his fourth album on his Faut Section imprint this month comprising several leftfield cuts.

Having released two albums on Soma and another one PoleGroup, Lewis Fautzi is no stranger to the long player format. Launching Faut Section in 2013, Insanity Department is the label’s debut album and follows an illustrious few years for Fautzi who’s appeared on the likes of Bpitch, Warm Up and Figure, mixed PoleGroup’s sixth volume of ‘Unknown Landscapes’, not to mention DJed at venues like Berghain, Gare Porto, Tresor and Lux Frágil to name a few.

Opening with the subterranean ‘Insane’, the album is a distinct blend of atmospheric textures and bold melodies forming seven refined tracks not geared for peaktime techno sets. Tracks like ‘Conspiracy’ feature a stuttering beat and echoing notes whilst the intricate pitter-patter qualities of ‘Physicians’ generate a mesmerising aesthetic from start to finish.

Downtempo cuts like ‘Determination Of Insanity’ steadily march forward whilst cavernous synths pulsate throughout, leading into the ominous ‘Wounds Of Deadly Hate’ with its twisted drums and soaring synths. Nearing the end, ‘The Science Behind’ is driven by murky pads and piercing chords until ‘Obscenity’ concludes the album with syncopated kicks and uplifting arrangements.

We caught up with the Portuguese producer and DJ to talk about the album, his home country and what’s coming up for him in 2019

In Inteview with Ruede Hagelstein

Raised in the suburbs of Berlin, Ruede Hagelstein is a German producer, singer, songwriter, and DJ who later moved to the German capital at the age of 20.

A younger Ruede sang in a choir, tortured his guitar, and dreamed of having a rock star career. Instead, he started DJing in the late-nineties at the renowned Berlin club Tresor. While his DJing career progressed, Ruede was also an editor for various nightlife and music magazines: Groove Magazin, FLYER Magazin, PRINZ Magazin. His time spent as an editor brought him closer to the heart of the dance music scene, which led him to co-found restrealitaet.de – a Berlin-based web platform covering the local underground techno scene.

In 2006, Ruede earned an Audio Engineer Degree at the SAE Institute and became a resident DJ at Watergate, one of Berlin’s most popular clubs. The first tracks Ruede produced got signed by big labels such as Kitsune, Eskimo, and Cocoon. Soon, Ruede found himself co-producing with other major artists, composing music for commercials, and scoring “The Wyld,” one of Europe’s biggest musical productions.

He now has numerous releases that are housed on labels like Watergate Records, Upon You, and Souvenir. He is also widely known for his remixing skills, which have been requested by powerhouse record labels like Get Physical Music (Germany), Bedrock (UK), Culprit (US), Suara (Spain). Parallel to his electronic music career, Ruede has formed an indie-electronica band called “Ruede Hagelstein & The Noblettes” and founded his own mixing studio in Berlin, where he works with diverse artists like the Adana Twins, Move D, Tiefschwarz, and many more.
