Q&A and Global Vibe Radio 186 Feat. JKS

This week’s guest on Global Vibe Radio is a young French artist who has been making waves in his country’s underground scene and beyond thanks to a sound that blends modern techno with old-school rave elements.

JKS’ energetic sets are charged with trance and rave influences, transmitting a high intensity that only very few are able to. With his own label MolekĂŒl, he has released true ravey bombs that have been a staple of international Techno artists like Kobosil, I Hate Models or SHDW & Obscure Shape for a long time.

Along with his label partner Mayeul, Valentin makes up the live duo ‘Jawbreakers’, a name that perfectly fits what to expect during a set from the two artists. A regular in the Paris warehouse rave scene, and building his way up around the best European clubs and festivals, JKS has recently released three propelling techno cuts on Regal’s Involve Records in the name of his Invaders EP, which you can find here.

Enjoy JKS’ exclusive mix for Global Vibe Radio and read on for our exclusive interview with the French artist.

Sensory Deprivation with selective response

Earlier this year, selective response released his first music to the world, scoring a premiere and support on the coveted HATE YouTube channel. Both his last single-track releases ‘Scorched Earth Policy’ and ‘Weekend At Nik’s’ provided a clear indication that the California Native was not messing around, with his powerful, industrial driving productions. No doubt, a new name for many, his productions have already had early support from Cleric, Dax J, I Hate Models and Perc.

This September he launched his imprint Crisis Of Man and after the success of the first release, brings a hard-hitting second round for November and the darker months ahead.

The title track of this EP, titled Sensory Deprivation, features a huge kettle drum kick and rumbling bass to lead the way, joined swiftly by sparse percussions and unsettling, tensive sonics. Something of an oasis midway sees new percussive tones added before the tension is heaped on for the big payoff.

Far more insistent than the first, “Help Me Hate You” features scattergun melodics that add to the melee before hats and rides hammer the aggression home. Heightening the tension throughout, becoming almost visceral by the end. Aptly named, this track derives from dark emotions and soundscapes.

Today we not only premiere “Help Me Hate You” from the EP, but present to you an exclusive interview with the man himself.

In Interview: Emika vs Pinch

Emika’s 6th studio album Falling In Love With Sadness reflects a renewed understanding of Emika’s own genealogy, kindred lineage and its connection to modernity. Marking a drastic departure from the menacing, stripped-down qualities of albums past, Dva and Drei; Emika has resurfaced with a new upwelling of sound gracing the bittersweet, melancholic and sanguine.

The album was released on World Mental Health Day, Oct 2018, and now one year later, Emika is set to release a very special remix EP following on. She has called upon the unique sound-worlds of electronic music’s most compelling artists.

Pinch, a pioneer of UK bass-driven music, is considered to be one of the most groundbreaking, explorative producers to emerge from the UK dubstep scene. Rising techno star Julia Govor is an artist doing things differently, paving her own way with her own label, receiving recognition from the global dance music scene. Rebekah needs no introduction, pioneering her own intense sound, now entering her 20th year in the business, she is a serious artist with some seriously heavy vibes. Underground Berlin talent Headless Horseman, although shrouded in mystery, is in high demand worldwide to perform his unique live sets at some of the biggest clubs and festivals. Not to mention Emika produced the original album material with cult electro icon The Exaltics.

This remix EP explores 4 clear sound worlds in electronic music today. Experimental bass music, hypnotic and dark techno, and electro. Pinch creates a seductive environment for a scene from which could have been from David Fincher’s Fight Club, one which threatens to overload at any given time, but retains tension until the end, using Emika’s voice as the narrator for the scene.

Recently, we asked Pinch and Emika to sit down for an exclusive chat with one another. This time, we just listened and let them do the talking. Below is what ensued…

Digging deeper with Keith Carnal

Digging Deeper with Keith Carnal

Earlier this month we announced the upcoming album debut of an artist that we have come to love and respect for his productions and energetic DJ sets: Keith Carnal. Today digging deeper with Keith Carnal sees us learn more about the roots and life of this well-respected Amsterdam-based techno artist.

The Dutch artist made his LA debut with us earlier this summer, performing a peak-time three-hour set that had the entire warehouse bumping until sunrise. Keith’s tracks are consistently played by artists of various genres, finding play from underground techno acts inside Berghain as well as more mainstream acts on big festival stages, a testament to the versatility and quality of his tracks.

With most of these highly-acclaimed releases out on esteemed imprints the likes of ARTS and Affin, Keith recently launched his own SEC NDÂș (Second Degree) imprint. Following two EPs now under his belt featuring stand-out tracks like “Rolls,” “Van Gogh” and “Obesity,” Keith is now releasing his debut album in the form of ten-track Retrofit album.

The album is outstanding, as we ourselves wrote: “The album showcases Keith’s dynamic, effective and eclectic studio muscles in ways not many LPs do. This is not a compilation of dance-floor-ready bangers, but rather a mesmerizing and well-thought-out journey through Keith’s mind as an artist. This is not to say that none of the tracks are ready for dance floor play. Rather, it underscores the fact that Retrofit is far beyond a “debut” album — it’s a collection of carefully-crafted tracks, seasoned by never-ending years of musical passion.”

This monumental release deserved an in-depth chat with the man-of-the-moment. We dove a bit deeper with this one, digging deeper with Keith Carnal to discuss the album and label of course, but also ADE, his debut U.S. tour, living in Amsterdam, his touring pet peeves, and much more.

In Interview with Sian

Techno tastemaker Sian owns Octopus Recordings and has previously released on acclaimed labels like Pokerflat, Soma and Bedrock, among others.

While not foregoing his other projects, 2019 saw Sian introduce fans to a new sound — one that harkens back to the glory days of electro, synthwave and darkwave. Drawing comparisons to artists like Terrence Fixmer, Blackstrobe, and Vitalic but with a contemporary spin, this new sound has found a home on deadmau5’s mau5trap imprint where, following the project’s first component, Ultraviolet 1.0, Sian satisfied listeners this year with the second installation of his project: Ultraviolet 2.0. His ever-evolving sounds flow throughout each track with his implementation of acid sounds and varying sound design techniques, and it is his craft that earned him direct support spots for deadmau5’s highly anticipated The Cube V3 tour in 2019.

Beyond his work on Ultraviolet 2.0 this year, he’s booked shows worldwide as Sian, and in summer packed out the Pink Tent at HARD Summer with his second project AMOK with Will Clarke.

6AM is no stranger to Sian’s work, but with so many new projects now on the go, we found it fitting to sit down with the LA resident to discuss them all, and how he juggles each on his very busy schedule.

Q&A and Global Vibe Radio 184 Feat. Oscar Mulero

Spanish techno veteran Oscar Mulero delivers a specially-curated mix for our 184th Global Vibe Radio episode.

Oscar’s DJ career has been as prolific and long-lasting as the evolution of dance music. As a key figure in its development, Oscar has always absorbed new trends and kept his finger on the pulse of electronic dance music, from the end of the ’80s right up to the present day. It is impossible to understand his genius without taking into account the tireless work he has carried out behind the decks for three decades now. Production-wise he’s been releasing records since the late ’90s, with countless 12″ vinyls and several studio albums, as well as many remixes for the best players in the scene.

Oscar runs Warm Up, his very own imprint, since 2000 as well as the label PoleGroup Records since 2004, both of which have reached the 50 releases mark. On 2013 he started a series of live A/V performances under several project names like Light and Dark, Biolive and Monochrome AV. Recent years also saw the explosion of SelecciĂłn Natural, the project he founded alongside his PoleGroup colleagues Exium and Reeko, as well as touring far and wide, reaching every corner of the globe from Los Angeles for WORK presents to the depth of South America, from every significant techno city in Europe to far-flung Japan, all cementing his status as one of the most respected and sought-after techno pioneers of the last two decades.

Meeting Oscar in LA earlier this year was somewhat of a surreal experience for me personally. I had long respected his artistry and had lost myself on dance floors in Europe listening to him play on several occasions and, not knowing what to expect ahead of picking him up at LAX, my mind raced through various subjects we could possibly talk about. With three decades of industry experience, what would he be like? What would he think of LA and the party that night? Was he as “hardcore” as he looked in the pics with his tattoos and punk-rock style?

Needless to say, at least to anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Oscar, all my expectations and doubts were thrown out the window the minute we introduced each other. The man in front of me was kind, attentive, talkative and as genuine as they come. He was as interested in me, and the LA techno scene he was about to play for, as I was in him and his music. He may have been doing this for 30 years and he has likely “seen it all,” but the impression I got as we got to know each other more, was that of a young artist still eager to prove himself, of an artist with a clear mission in mind when it comes to techno.

Oscar returns to the United States on Nov 8th and 9th to perform two important gigs, info for which can be found below.
