Going to Ibiza? New Holiday Tax Goes Into Effect This Summer

IbizaBeach

News has just come in that anyone traveling to Ibiza from July 1st onwards will be subjected to a new ‘Sustainable Tourist Tax’, with the funds collected going towards protecting the beautiful resources of the magical island. This is the latest change following news that local government will be forcing clubs to close doors at 6:30am starting this summer.

The tax is being excised by the government of the Balearic Islands, meaning that  it will be applicable to other Mediterranean islands that fall under its jurisdiction such as Majorca and Menorca. The tax will be collected at the traveler’s accommodation, and will vary depending on the type of housing chosen for the vacation. It will begin at €0.50 per day for hostels and campsites and go up to €2 for luxury hotels.

Anyone traveling to Malta will also be subjected to a similar tax this summer, with those 18 year olds expected to pay €0.50 per night from June. Mainland Spain and other Mediterranean locations are = not included in this new tax.

Back in 2002 the islands introduced a similar tax, but back then the results weren’t successful causing it to be canceled after just one season. At the time holiday makers decided to travel elsewhere as a result, with Turkey, Egypt and and Tunisia reaping most of the benefits. Due to recent reluctance of people to visit these latter countries, it is expected that tourism to the Balearic islands won’t suffer from this new tax. In fact, Spain as a whole is expected to have it’s most successful summer ever according to The

UshuaĂŻa Ibiza Opening Party to Feature Richie Hawtin, Guy Gerber, Maya Jane Coles and More

Last Year's UshuaĂŻa Opening Party

Last Year’s UshuaĂŻa Opening Party

As we inch our way through winter, Ibiza is gearing up for a new season and announcements of opening parties and residency line-ups are starting to flair up.

UshuaĂŻa Ibiza, the island’s biggest outdoor party venue, has announced an Opening Party lineup that veers away from the EDM-centric names it often houses throughout the season by focusing purely on a roster of underground stars. While ENTER.Ibiza is no more, the brand’s head-honcho Richie Hawtin will be headlining the celebrations, accompanied by a supporting stars of excellence. In alphabetical order, he is joined by Andrea Oliva, the mind behind the Ants Colony concept, Rumor’s Guy Gerber, ENTER.Sake’s Hito, Hot Since 82, La Familia’s Joris Voorn, Los Suruba and last but not least Maya Jane Coles.

The party doors will open at 12pm on Saturday May 28th, with tickets ranging between 40,00 € for early entry and 60,00 € for regular ticket.

Although no information has been provided, the event flyer not only bears Hawtin’s M_nus logo but also the label’s signature colors and style. It will be interesting to see how things shift on the island this year, after news came out that UshuaĂŻa Ibiza is purchasing the iconic Space Ibiza across the street, a move that coincided with Carl Cox’s announcement to not return to the club in 2017 and Hawtin’s decision to not continue ENTER.Ibiza altogether.

Richie Hawtin’s ENTER Leaves Ibiza

Enter

This morning we were hit with the news that as of this season, Richie Hawtin’s ENTER is leaving Space Ibiza and the island. This means that Space, which has already seen Carl Cox announce its departure after the coming season, will most likely be hosting a new concept party on Thursdays as of summer 2016.

The real motives behind the decision are not entirely evident from Hawtin’s Facebook post where he announced the move, but speculation has it that it may be due to Space being bought out by the group that owns UshuaĂŻa across the street. Space Ibiza’s long-time owners and manager, in particular Pepe Rosello, had built strong ties of friendship with many of the club’s residents over the years and it’s unclear whether this has any bearing on the party moves for both ENTER and Cox’s Revolution.

Hawtin does clarify that ENTER is not ending, but rather the project “will continue to explore site specific events around the world based upon our core principles: Music. Sake. Technology. Experience.”

Vote: Which Ibiza nightclub will go past the new closing time first?

Ibiza Banner

The nightclubs on Ibiza have always been a welcome home for dance music culture. From the pre-party meals to the club nights themselves, a night out in Ibiza turns into more than just a night out. Almost everyone who has visited the island can attest to a few early mornings on a terrace somewhere; be it Space, DC-10, or the famed Amnesia terrace. But recent news from the island states that government officials and local authorities will have a much more strict policy when enforcing their new 6:30 AM closing times for Ibiza clubs. Clearly, events have gone well past the standard closing curfew –  look no further than Marco Carola’s Music On events, or a typical night at Space. So it begs the question…

New Closing Times for Ibiza Clubs in 2016

Music On Main RoomNo more…No more blissful mornings with Papa Sven on the terrace. No more Music On marathons with Marco Carola. No more stumbling out of Space in the mid morning daylight after hours upon hours of dancing. As reported in El Diario De Ibiza, a local publication on the White Isle, all Ibiza super clubs and even local bars will be required to close promptly at 6:30 AM.

In an Island Council meeting, President Vincent Torres met with other mayors and government officials to discuss the new closing time. In addition to the 6:30 closing, strict sanctions will be placed on those who violate this new rule. Only time will tell on how strict these sanctions may be.

These closing restrictions have technically been in place in past seasons, but it’s clear that not all clubs abide by these regulations. Many establishments, especially Amnesia and Space, operate well past the current closing times, often ending well past 9AM. Hell, it’s reported that the Amnesia closing ended seven hours past their permitted time this year.

While 6:30 AM may seem like an acceptable time to close, many are struggling to face the fact, and are voicing their opinion on how the new Ibiza closing times will affect the deeply rooted dance culture on the island. Sunrise sessions on the Terrace just won’t be the same.

Results for the 2015 DJ Awards in Ibiza

dj-awards-2014

Jose Pascual hosted the first DJ Awards back in 1998, and throughout the years the purpose of the DJ Awards is to celebrate the impact and contributions of artists in the realm of electronic dance music. World-acclaimed talent descend upon Ibiza every year at the conclusion of the summer party months for accolades at the DJ Awards; each genre awards artists based on popular vote across social media platforms, and the award comes in the form of a kryptonite piece, a portmanteau symbolizing the “code and mystery of life” juxtaposed with the nightlife and its culture. The results are in for this year’s 2015 DJ Awards in Ibiza. Check out who made it to the top.

Space Closing Fiesta 2015 Initial Lineup Announcement

10694312_10152394750852393_473511718975567557_o

It’s that time of year again! No, not Christmas, but close enough if you’re lucky to be in Ibiza during closing season. Space Ibiza is notorious for having one of the best closing parties and the super club has announced the official lineup for their closing Fiesta.

Taking place on Sunday, October 4th, Space Ibiza is bringing Playa d’en Bossa a 17 hour dance extravaganza to kiss Summer 2015 goodbye. Headlining this massive event are Space legends, Carl Cox and Luciano, who both will have double sets. Some notable artists also featured at the 2015 Space Closing are Ben Klock, Federico Grazzini, John Talabot in addition to  some of the El Row residents: De La Swing, Marc Maya, Toni Varga, and George Privati.

The lineup will continue to expand throughout the week, but we can definitely expect some fantastic back-to-back sets. Carl Cox will start the evening off on the outdoor Ultra Ibiza stage and close off the evening with a back-to-back set with Saved Record’s Nic Fanciulli in the Terrace. Luciano will also spin his first set on the UMF Ibiza stage and will later be accompanied by techno pioneer, Josh Wink in the Main Room. Read more
