Take A Look At The Rumored Site For The New Space Ibiza Hotel & Club Set To Open In 2018

Hotel Reco Ibiza - Possible Space Ibiza

Months ago Carl Cox revealed that 2016 wasn’t yet to be the end of Space Ibiza, but rather a year of major change for the brand. Its owner, Pepe Rosello, decided to sell the venue to the Ushuaïa Group but still maintains control of the brand, intending to re-open in a few years elsewhere on the island.

Where? Reco des Sol Hotel in San Antonio on the other side of the island.

Currently most of Ibiza’s clubbing force is in Playa d’en Bossa, Ibiza Town and San Rafael, with San Antonio’s two major venues Es Paradis and Eden struggling to bring in crowds. Space’s move would of course change that, bringing back focus to a town that right now mostly attracts party-goers thanks to its sunset parties at Café Mambo and Café del Mar.

According to rumors coming from the island, Rosello plans to completely renovate the complex, add a bran-new Discoteca-styled dancehall next door and open it as Space Hotel and Club two years from now. Overlooking Es Pouet Beach, the venue will most likely also house a refurbished version of its current pool, meaning that a new pool party series could be on the horizon.

Ibiza Authorities Suspend Ibiza Rocks Music License

Ibiza Rocks

In the latest incident to involve Ibiza authorities and music venues, Ibiza Rocks’ music license has been suspended for failure to comply with San Antonio’s noise regulations.

The hotel, which also functions as an open-air venue much like Ushuaïa on the other side of the island, focuses mostly on pop, alternative rock, rap and hip-hop rather than electronic music as the majority of the island does.

The Diario de Ibiza reports that the venue failed to comply with the vibration and noise ordinance set for the city of San Antonio. The inspection, which occurred July 24th, also unearthed a fire and safety irregularity when it discovered that the stage had been moved to block a fire exit. Although the walk-through occurred two months ago, the suspension came into effect on September 14th and will remain active until the venue fixes the irregularities found.

So far only two events have been affected by the license suspension: an alt-rock gig with Wolf Alice on September 14th, W.A.R.’s closing party on September 16th showcasing David Rodigan and Lethal Bizzle. Both events were relocated to nearby restaurant Ibiza Rocks Bar on San Antonio’s beachfront.

This is the latest in a string of troubles between Ibiza officials and venues, including the current tax fraud investigation into Amnesia, Pacha, Ushuaïa, Privilege and Space, music shut-off times getting moved to 6:30am, the closure of beach parties and the general worry that the island cannot handle more tourism and is clamping down on the no-holds-barred lifestyle Ibiza has always been famous for.

Ushuaïa and Pacha Ibiza Raided by Spanish Police, Millions of Euros in Cash Found

Pacha Ibiza

In the early hours of September 15th, 6:30am local time, Ibiza’s Ushuaïa Beach Hotel and Pacha were raided by local police as part of the ongoing operation that is looking into suspected tax fraud.

Operation Chopin launched with the raid of Amnesia earlier this summer, including the arrest of the club’s owner, his son and three other workers at the venue. The nationwide investigation continued with similar raids at Privilege and Space, all part of a total of 87 venues that are being looked into for possible tax evasion.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo stated that the Pacha and Ushuaïa were visited by police this morning, September 15th, at 6:30am and 8am respectively. Ibiza news outlet Diario De Ibiza reported that police also made a visit to the offices of Grupo Empresas Matutes (GEM), the parent company of Palladium Hotel Group that oversees Ushuaïa.

Authorities found millions in Euros in cash at both venues. It will now be up to authorities to verify if the cash was being recorded or not. A tax agent involved with the operation said: “Now we just have to verify if the amounts correspond to those declared in the companies’ accounting records.”

With Pacha now on sale for $500 million, Space Ibiza closing down, 6:30am morning curfews enforced by police and Operation Chopin in full force, many are left to wonder what is happening to Ibiza and how much the island will be changing in the coming years.

Last Tuesday 26th July, Maceo Plex explored the mosaic of sounds that Ibiza can offer by taking a 24 hour musical journey through 10 different spots 0n the island.

Although many outlets concentrated on what seemed to be a record-breaking feat – the performance of 10 separate sets in the space of 24 hours – Maceo Plex took to his Twitter page to underscore that the focus wasn’t on the number of sets, but rather on the eclectic selection of genres and sounds that have made Ibiza such an iconic and magical music destination for decades.

Where Is The Next Ibiza?

Ibiza DC10

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again: Ibiza is changing – and if anyone tells you otherwise they have either not seen it with their own eyes or are simply lying to you.

In recent months we have seen local officials closing down beach parties, imposing 6:30am club curfews and admitting that the island cannot take in much more tourism due to depleted natural and local resources. And let’s not forget the imminent end of the legendary Space Ibiza (with ENTER and Carl Cox’s Music Is Revolution both leaving the island), the rise of VIP-centered Ushuaïa as well as the increasing prevalence of commercial dance music throughout the Balearic island. On top of that, a recent criminal investigation by local authorities has resulted in raids at Amnesia, Space and Privilege, with four men arrested, including the owner of Amnesia and his son.

Things are changing, and Ibiza is no longer the same Ibiza of 5, 10 or 15 years ago, and while progress is natural, a large portion of dance music fans are now looking for less-regulated new destinations to freely enjoy the underground sounds of their favorite artists. Below are our top picks for the “next Ibiza” – destinations that have been and continue to be more and more popular for those seeking to party while on vacation.

Officials Say Ibiza Cannot Handle Increase in Tourism

Ibiza

According to the head of Ibiza’s Department of Tourism, the party island “cannot support much more increase in tourism.”

Vicente Torres opened up to Pulse Radio, expressing his concern for the rising number of visitors to the Balearic vacation destination. The main worry is with regards to the island’s resources, specifically the constant decline of clean water for residents and those vacationing. “We have a limited capacity being an island,” he mentioned. “Not only regarding the capacity of people but also regarding capacity of potable water and other important infrastructures such as roads, water treatment and desalination plans, etc.”

The fear is that the situation will reach a breaking point if tourism statistics increase in the near future. Beginning on July 1st, Ibiza’s government began enforcing a Sustainable Tourism Tax with the aim to address these problems and ensure they do not become a severe issue in the coming future. The new tax asks that hostel and camping visitors pay 50 cents per day, while those in luxury hotels and apartments will pay €2.

Torres went on to explain that, “in some areas we have already started renewing water pipes, since we know that 40 percent (approximately) of water is wasted due to the bad conditions of the pipes. There is also a prohibition of getting water out of wells during specific periods during the year.”

Other initiatives have begun to support sustainable and affordable tourism while visiting the island.

Spanish Authorities Have Also Searched Space and Privilege Nightclubs in Ibiza

Following two long raids at Amnesia Ibiza by Spanish authorities, including an initial seventeen-hour search and a second one that uncovered over 2 million Euros in cash stashed in hidden compartments, the Tax Agency (AEAT) of Spain has gone on to search Space and Privilege.

Local news outlet Diario de Ibiza, who has kept abreast on the investigation, reports that the AEAT is looking into around 87 nightlife spots across the entire country of Spain, including four on the Balearic island and international clubbing destination. Four people were arrested during the Amnesia raids, with a total of fourteen individuals reportedly under investigation at the current moment.

The AEAT was assisted by Police in their searches of Space and Privilege, with latest reports claiming that other large sums of money were found during these latter parts of the ongoing Operation Chopin investigation.

According to another Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, the four people arrested in the Amnesia operation have been given conditional release — they must periodically appear before a judge and cannot leave Spain without permission. Their passports must also be handed in to authorities as part of their release.

Amnesia Ibiza Raided by Local Police

Amnesia

Spanish police stormed Amnesia Ibiza and arrested the club owner.

The news was broken by Diario de Ibiza, who revealed that Spanish Guardia Civil raided the San Rafael clubbing institution arriving via helicopter at 8am local time. While reports on the exact nature of the operation are a little confusing, it appears to be a joint operation with tax authorities, drug and organized crime authorities as well as trained dogs. El Mundo asserted that this is an anti-drug sting, confirming that a total of four people have been arrested at Amnesia, including owner Martin Ferrer.

There appears to be a level of secrecy surrounding the operation, but a spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Majorca confirmed, “There is an operation in progress but the court secrecy order means we won’t be making a detailed official comment today or sending out a press release.”

UPDATE 3:51pm PST: Amnesia will be open tonight for Together.

Circoloco Pulls Ten Walls from DC-10 Ibiza Lineup Following Protests from Fellow DJs and Fans

Ten Walls

Following yesterday’s controversial announcement by Circoloco to book Ten Walls for this coming Monday’s residency party at DC-10 Ibiza, party organizers were hit by a series of complaints from both internationally-renowned DJs in the industry, as well as electronic music fans at large.

Understandably, many felt insulted that the Lithuanian producer, guilty of having made public homophobic remarks last summer through his social media channels, was once again given such a platform to play music. While some electronic music listeners did feel he should be given another chance, the majority of those weighing in were surprised, shocked or even angry at the decision.

Some of the most vocal tweets came from the likes of Midland, Eats Everything and Seth Troxler. The latter is scheduled to play the party still, and we suspect, due to his history as a vocal champion for equality that he had a word or two to say in private about the booking.

A mere 24 hours after the lineup announcement, Circoloco has come out with an official statement pulling Ten Walls from the roster set to play the club on July 4th:

Authorities Have Banned tINI & The Gang’s Ibiza Beach Parties

Tini gang

Last year already, several promoters, DJs and labels offering free beach parties on the Balearic island of Ibiza were told to pack their bags by authorities who put their foot down on events such as Diynamic, tINI and the Gang, and Detroit Love showcases.

This summer, tINI, who famously played back-to-back with Bill Patrick for 31 hours at Sunwaves earlier this year, had planned to hold five daytime tINI and the Gang parties on Tuesdays at Ibiza’s Lips Beach Club.

However, the producer and DJ took to her social networks to announce some sad news via live video, “Unfortunately there will be no free beach party this year for us. The government again strike back in Ibiza. That’s really sad news, I’m trying not to cry here. But that’s how it is, we’ve got to deal with it.”

She proceeded to tell her fans that the parties were at least able to find a new home, at the San Rafael club Underground, starting this Tuesday at 9.30pm until 6.30am. tINI was at least happy to be able to feature the same artists that were scheduled to play at Lips throughout the five-party residency.

This isn’t the first news of Ibiza authorities stepping in to change the spectrum of the island’s party ways. They have already clamped down on club closing times, forcing every venue to shut their doors at 6:30am when in the past it was the continued and long parties deep into the morning that made Ibiza such a revered destination throughout the world.
