body image

With the new year approaching we look forward to an upcoming release from Cur.l on UK based label, Pins and Needles. The Dreaming Back EP features four tracks and one digital exclusive that fully embody deep atmospheres and dance floor certified grooves. While all tracks have their own special character, some personal favorites off the EP are Fly Back, It’s You, and Anna Talking Bubbles. Each track stands alone with tremendous amounts of character, but as one cohesive release Dreaming Back is a great journey through the deeper sounds of house and techno. So far it’s received support from artists such as Magda, Stacey Pullen, Hermanez, Marc De Pulse, and Ibiza Sonica Radio to name a few. Check out the EP preview below, and be on the look out for more fantastic releases from Pins and Needles Records.

Soul Clap Studio Tour

soul-clap-software-synths-620-80Boston-based duo Soul Clap, consistingĀ of DJ/Producers Bamboozle and Lonely C,Ā Ā has been pushing boundaries since 2001. Their blend of house, tehno, disco, funk and soul music renders them a vitalĀ component of an American dance culture that has been forced into the underground by aĀ watered-down plethoraĀ of cliche ‘festival bangers,’ colloquially known as ‘EDM;’ this is ultimately manifested in its dissemination by gluttonous corporation and patronage of pretentious bottle-service socialites, resulting in a homogeneity across a number of genres as producers striveĀ to fit the so-called ‘EDM’ mold.Ā Soul Clap provides a breath of fresh air amidst the disheartening consolidation of a once-beloved industry,Ā demonstrating that ‘proper’ dance music is far from dead and will never fall into obscurity. Ā Their eclectic, yet cohesive style is largely due to theĀ abundance of both hardware and software synthesizers, crafty utilization of Ableton Live, and some outboard FX gear.Ā While emphasizing the importanceĀ of incorporating older and newer hardware, Soul Clap also feels that it is important to embrace software technology to drive the evolution of music. They have stated time and again that making great music doesn’t require a fancy studio – just a creative mind. However, they both admit that working in a fancy studio certainly makes the process both fun and efficient. Our favorites in their collection are the Roland Jupiter-8, Korg MS-2000.

Throwback Thursday: Adonis – No Way Back

Artwork

Back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, DJ’s and producers were relatively limited in their options for creating music. But even with limited tools, that didn’t stop them from creating timeless pieces of music that we would look back on with nostalgia today. Adonis – No Way Back is a prime example of this.

There were no fancy plugins or virtual synths back in the late 80’s. Maybe this simplicity is why the magic happened. In No Way Back it appears as if Adonis had nothing more than a drum machine, a 303 synth, and a vocal sample. Think about that for a minute… an absolutely timeless piece of music recorded on no more than a three or four track mixer. Sure technology is great, and to each their own, but No Way Back would hold it’s own against any modern dance house track.

Obviously there were many influential tracks that facilitated in getting us to the point where we are today, and without argument No Way Back is up there with the classics from the likes of Kerri Chandler, Juan Atkins, and well this list of legends could go on forever. Enjoy this throwback from Adonis, and never forget the past as it helps guide us into the future.

D’Julz at Womb, Tokyo

Djulz Womb Flyer

When it comes to getting the dance floor wild, leave it to non other than French house star D’Julz. To get our Monday started on the right foot here is D’Julz live from one of our favorite Japanese clubs, Womb. He brought the finest blend of house and techno to the clubbers at Womb for quite a journey on Halloween night this year.

The mix starts with classic house pads and atmospheres, and it sets the mood perfectly for the remainder of the mix. After the first track I was hooked. The groove transforms as a single percussive hit changes everything, and moving forward it is a true house music experience. To be honest, quite envious of those who were on the dance floor for this one.

The event was promoted and organized by prominent music group Tresvibes, and included Point G (Live) and many Japanese residents to complete the lineup. Japan is starting to become a focal point for the ever growing house and techno scene in the world, and nights like these show that there is an incredible amount of promise moving into the future.

Sunday Vibes: John Talabot 4 hour live mix

John-Talabot-Press

John Talabot has made a rareĀ four-hour live DJ session available to stream and download for his fans and peers. Ā According to Talabot explains on his SoundCloud “I recorded this mix last week in Scheveningen. It was a nice, covered beach-club tent on a rainy night, but the vibe couldn’t have been any better.” The extended mix byĀ the Barcelona artists kicks off in a more Balearic and disco-touched territory before moving onto more Deep/Tech and House sound later in the mix, the rare extended mix shows the versatility of his track selection and knowledge full of unexpected cuts along the way. Talabot’s full recording can be streamed and downloaded below.
