Japan’s Rainbow Disco Club Just Dropped Heavy 2016 Lineup

RDC

Rainbow Disco Club is known world-over as Japan’s premier boutique festival, and with good reason. Last year the festival ended up in Resident Advisor’s Top 10 Festivals to attend in May thanks to a roster of artists that blends worldwide talent with the top of Japan’s dance music DJ pool.

The festival moved to its current location at Higashi Izu Cross Country Course in Shuzuoka in 2015, also expanding for the first time to a three-day operation. This new tradition is set to continue between Friday 29th of April and Sunday May 1st this year, with another selection of fine dance music artists set to provide the musical backdrop for the weekend.

Legend Andrew Weatherall will be accompanied by the likes of Nightmares On Wax, who will be playing a DJ set, Gilles Peterson and Move D. A selection of Rush Hour Allstars will also be returning to the festival’s decks  with Antal, Hunee, Soichi Terada and San Proper all set to represent the highly acclaimed label this year. Other local talent comes in the form of Kenji Takimi, Kaoru Inoue, Kikiorix and Sisi, while The Black Madonna is scheduled for an exclusive back-to-back set with the esteemed DJ Nobu. Red Bull is sponsoring a separate stage with a program that includes DJ Funk, Egyptian Lover, Kuniyuki as well as DJ Sodeyama, one our selected artists to watch for 2016!

Listen to Âme X Dixon Essential Mix – April 2nd, 2016

EMAme

In the early hours of this morning, BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong gave the Essential Mix reigns to the two biggest names of the Innervisions label.

We are of course talking about Âme and Dixon, two of the most influential names in the underground dance music scene of the past 10 years. While both have had the pleasure of gracing the Essential Mix decks in the past, this marks their first time as a duo act. This morning’s Essential Mix was also the first back-to-back appearance for 2016 by any artist.

Their unique sound shines throughout the 2 hour performance, with plenty of unreleased materials debuted alongside such stand-out tracks as “Synthfrilla” by Frak, “Insvept” by Dorisburg, “Ingoma” by Christian Vinci and “22 Degree Halo” by Stimming.

Without further ado, here is the complete two hour recording available for your listening pleasure through SoundCloud. Full track listing and additional streaming is also available through the BBC Radio Player.

Frankie Knuckles

#TBT Series: Relive Some Of The Best Frankie Knuckles Moments Caught on Video

The 31st of March is a special and bittersweet date for house music fans all over the world. I still remember exactly where I was in Chicago in 2014  when the city and the world were hit with the heart-breaking news that Frankie Knuckles, The Godfather of House, had passed away due to complications linked to a diabetes condition.

That date became significant for all House Music fans throughout the world, just as August 25th had been for a decade prior and continues to be today. In 2004, then Chicago Mayor Richard Daley declared August 25th to be Frankie Knuckles Day. The block where the Warehouse stood was renamed Frankie Knuckles Way and that evening 10,000 people poured into the city’s Grant Park to hear him play.

New Tokyo Club, Contact, Opening Next Month

ContactTokyo

One of Tokyo’s iconic clubs, Air, closed last year with one final hurrah on New Year’s Eve. It has now been announced that Global Hearts, the company behind Air, is opening a brand new concept club next month in the city’s area of Shibuya.

The new basement venue, Contact, features a main space, a smaller bar area and will adopt the no-photography policy that has been widely praised in select world clubs such as Berghain/Panorama Bar and Output in New York City.

In an interview with Resident Advisor,  the club’s director Yuko Ichikawa explained the vision behind the new venue. “We’d like to create a space where everyone can easily come and enjoy the music without any concerns. A place where you forget that you even have a mobile phone to ‘take pictures.’ There will be a policy for no cameras/video recordings/etc., but we will hire professional photographers. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind the photographers forgetting to take pictures because they get sucked into the music and the environment,” he said. “There are no resident DJs at the moment. We want Contact to be a venue where young DJs would work hard and be proud to stand inside the DJ booth. A place where the DJs can grow alongside the venue, and eventually call it their ‘home.'”

Contact will launch things off on Friday, April 1st, with Ostgun Ton’s Function on headlining duties. The following two months’ programming alone highlight the impressive focus on quality from the club’s booking perspective, with Francois K, Laurent Garnier, Louie Vega and DJ Nori joining Dekmantel and Giegling showcases to round up the month of April. In May, the club is set to play host to DJ Nobu, efdemin, Erika and Derrick Carter just to name a few.

Breaking News: The 2016 Edition of Bloc Festival Will Be the Last

Bloc2

If you have plans to attend Bloc festival this year you’re in luck. And if you don’t yet, it may be time to start looking up travel information.

Bloc’s co-founder Alex Benson has just announced in an interview with Resident Advisor that 2016 will be the last edition of the festival, as the team prepares to launch a “super club” in London with surrounding music recording studios.

“It’s the last ever one because weekenders are strange, beautiful things,” said Benson. Bloc’s last weekend runs a month from now from March 11th through 13th at Butlins Resort in Minehead. The festival released Phase I and Phase II line-ups of monstrous proportions with the likes of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Jeff Mills, Four Tet, Floating Points (live), Speedy J and plenty more set to play.

Benson went on to assert that they “won’t be doing any curtain calls, encores, reunion tours or one-last-jobs.”
