This past weekend San Diego saw the return of CRSSD Festival for an entirely Sold-Out weekend. An estimated 15,000 attendees packed out the city’s Waterfront Park for a two-day of music bonanza that featured the who’s who of international house music as well as eclectic acts from the indie electronica world.

Colder-than-usual temperatures didn’t stop the festival from reaching peak attendance, leaving everyone to wonder if CRSSD will expand to three days in the near future or will continue as it has done for the past three editions. It is nothing short of remarkable that the team behind CRSSD has built a sold-out festival in merely a year, in no small part thanks to well-curated line-ups and one of the most beautiful festival setting in the United States.

Things started strong on Day one courtesy of Crosstown Rebels chief Damian Lazarus who took over the City Steps stage with a two hour set of powerful house peppered with tribal sounds.

Next up, it was the turn of Skream , who played not one but five sets over the weekend including a back-to-back with Tom Trago subbing in for a late Loco Dice on Day 2, a surprise back-to-back with Jamie Jones at an after-party and a set each on both Friday and Saturday.

Elsewhere, as the sun begun to set attendees were treated by beautiful performances by Lane 8 at The Palms stage and Ryan Hemsworth at the Ocean View Main Stage.

As the sky turned dark and a blanket of drizzle began to fall, Tiga took over at The Palms with a set that blurred the lines between techno and house while France’s GESAFFELSTEIN delivered with a powerful DJ set of personal production favorites that had the crowd wanting for more.

Depending on your taste, you could choose to end Saturday with Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones at The Palms stage, Cirez D and his signature progressive techno at The City Steps or the increasingly popular Odesza at the main stage. Despite the rain the crowds remained strong to close out the first day of CRSSD.

Overall, things went fairly smoothly throughout the first half of the weekend. Admittedly, large crowds caused some bottlenecks at the bathrooms which CRSSD worked to handle (and only partially did) by adding more porta potties on Sunday and it appeared that sound could be improved at both the City Steps and Palms stages by adding more stacks for those in the back. These are understandable and easily solvable growing pains for a festival that has perhaps expanded more than anyone could have ever expected in such a short period of time.

Sunday started strong, as blue skies took over welcoming thousands back to close out the weekend in style. Dirtybird faithful J.Phlip and Ardalan went back-to-back in front of a large crowd early in the day as Tom Trago handed over the decks to Swiss duo Adriatique at the City Steps.

Oliver Heldens took over the Ocean View stage for  one of the day’s most anticipated sets under his Hi-Lo moniker, drawing an unsurprisingly large crowd. A quick walk elsewhere as Green Velvet gave The City Steps his Chicago house treatment and Gorgon City went back-t0-back with Kidnap Kid highlighted just how busy the festival was at sold-out capacity: all three stages were busy with thousands of dancing crazy festival goers.

The evening at The Palms began with a Hot Since 82 two-hour set while Skream and Tom Trago filled in for Loco Dice who arrived thirty or so minutes late for his set. Having witnessed two of Skream’s three sets so far that weekend, it became clear just how versatile the Croydon-born DJ is in adapting to different crowds and settings. He was able to fill in for Loco Dice masterfully by steering away from the sound he had previous delivered with his scheduled sets.

Diversity was the name of the game as the festival came to an end. With Chet Faker main stage, those still looking for DJs divided themselves between Maceo Plex – who replaced Tale of Us who couldn’t travel due to sickness – and Dirtybird chief Claude vonStroke, who brought Green Velvet on for a surprise Get Real set. The former, just like during the inaugural edition of CRSSD a year earlier, seemed to attempt to to play past the allotted 10pm noise curfew but was unfortunately shut down.

Regardless, as thousands poured out of Waterfront Park and began to make their way to their chosen after-parties, it became clear that CRSSD Festival has undeniably cut itself a large slice of the pie that is the American festival scene. We look forward to seeing how the festival handles the amazing prospect of expansion in the coming years.

UshuaĂŻa Ibiza Opening Party to Feature Richie Hawtin, Guy Gerber, Maya Jane Coles and More

Last Year's UshuaĂŻa Opening Party

Last Year’s UshuaĂŻa Opening Party

As we inch our way through winter, Ibiza is gearing up for a new season and announcements of opening parties and residency line-ups are starting to flair up.

UshuaĂŻa Ibiza, the island’s biggest outdoor party venue, has announced an Opening Party lineup that veers away from the EDM-centric names it often houses throughout the season by focusing purely on a roster of underground stars. While ENTER.Ibiza is no more, the brand’s head-honcho Richie Hawtin will be headlining the celebrations, accompanied by a supporting stars of excellence. In alphabetical order, he is joined by Andrea Oliva, the mind behind the Ants Colony concept, Rumor’s Guy Gerber, ENTER.Sake’s Hito, Hot Since 82, La Familia’s Joris Voorn, Los Suruba and last but not least Maya Jane Coles.

The party doors will open at 12pm on Saturday May 28th, with tickets ranging between 40,00 € for early entry and 60,00 € for regular ticket.

Although no information has been provided, the event flyer not only bears Hawtin’s M_nus logo but also the label’s signature colors and style. It will be interesting to see how things shift on the island this year, after news came out that UshuaĂŻa Ibiza is purchasing the iconic Space Ibiza across the street, a move that coincided with Carl Cox’s announcement to not return to the club in 2017 and Hawtin’s decision to not continue ENTER.Ibiza altogether.

EDC NY Line-up Includes Chris Liebing, Hot Since 82, Mind Against and More

EDC NY

Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival is always an eclectic affair, and while the line-ups are definitely EDM-heavy, Pasquale Rotella and his team have always found space to give their fans some techno and house.

This year’s New York edition will take place on May 14th and 15th at Citi Field. Insomniac just released the complete line-up for 2016 and it includes some heavyweights of the current “underground” scene.

First up, in alphabetical order, is CLR boss Chris Liebing, a New York City favorite who is bound to bring a darker side of techno to the festival. Chicago’s Green Velvet, a regular Insomniac guest DJ, will also be making an appearance as will Hannah Wants.

Hot Since 82 is set to bring his Knee Deep in Sound brand to New York, possibly as the head of a stage showcase, as is Nicole Moudaber with Moodzone. New York’s very own Lauren Lane and The Martinez Brothers will also be performing, joined by Life & Death’s Mind Against, Paco Osuna, and Technasia.

Last year’s edition included illustrious names in techno and house such as Carl Cox, Art Department, Joseph Capriati, John Digweed, Luciano, Âme and Dixon.

Tier 1 tickets have already sold out. Tier 2 is currently on sale for $229 plus fees – layaway options are also available. See the full line-up below.

Dubfire and Audiofly remix Hot Since 82

HS82_04

While everyone is hot on the trail with a week left before Burning Man, Hot Since 82 gets the deep playa tech house treatment courtesy of Dubfire with a remix of Leave Me and an Audiofly remix of Sundown. The Dubfire Playa Remix of Hot Since 82 and Habischman’s Leave Me is both enigmatic and alluring with its hypnagogic synths, visceral vocals, and tribal drum lines. The Audiofly touchup of Sundown beacons a psychedelic awakening, a tune that elicits powerful thoughts while watching the sunrise on the Playa.

The 2-track release is hot off the press from Moda Black, a forward-thinking UK-based record label, that dabbles in the worldly sounds of house and techno. Dubfire’s Playa Remix is an unusual one-off that works because it is completely relevant to the Burner vibes manifesting all around.

The remixes are available for purchase on Beatport, iTunes, and 12″ vinyl direct from Moda Black, or you can stream below for a good listening.

Video Recap – Taken LA with Hot Since 82

Hot Since 82 Banner 1

Earlier this year, Hot Since 82 attempted to break the mold of a traditional club night with his “Taken” Party Concept. Hot Since 82 initiated the concept in London, but it eventually made it’s way to the United States in New York and Los Angeles.

Thump reports that the New York edition didn’t quite meet expectations (mostly due to a long bus ride that eventually lost it’s kidnapping charm), but does credit Hot Since 82 for brightening spirits with his musical programming once everyone arrived at the event.

While not much has been heard about the Los Angeles installment, the video sure does look convincing. Attendees appear to have been picked up at Sound Nightclub in Hollywood, and were then transported to a rather large warehouse venue in which Hot Since 82 started laying into deep techno cuts for the evening.

“A cheeky free download for the summer sun.” That’s how Hot Since 82 describes his recent track Voices that he’s made available for free download via his Soundcloud.

Voices is the type of track that is sure to have crowds going wild. An infectious groove starts the track off with a very faint synth melody teasing it’s way into the spectrum, and halfway through the first break Hot Since 82 teases in the classic Voices Inside My Head sample from The Police. The rest of the arrangement is filled with appropriate moments of calm and a dynamic rhythm, and is done with a touch of class that Hot Since 82 knows so well.

Hot Since 82 Brings ‘Taken’ Party to Los Angeles

TAKEN Featured

You’re going to be blindfolded, disoriented, and anxious. We know this doesn’t sound like an ideal situation under any normal circumstances, but then again
these aren’t normal circumstances. Hot Since 82 is bringing his ‘Taken’ style event to the United States, with a stop in non-other than Los Angeles on May 23rd.

TAKEN aims to gather like-minded fans and party-goers, blindfold them, and transport them to an undisclosed location somewhere in Los Angeles. Hot Since 82 is paying homage to the old rave days where finding the party was always an adventure, and a rewarding one at that. The Los Angeles installment of TAKEN should be quite the adventure with one epic party at the end of the tunnel.

TAKEN is a private event with limited availability. For those interested, head over to TAKEN – Los Angeles and register for a chance to attend the event. An interesting concept, and surely one that breaks the mold of the typical club nights.
