NTO Q&A

The Live Journey of NTO

The story behind NTO started with a match made in heaven, a kid from the South of France always hooked to his guitar, and electronic and dance music. After going to the Sziget Festival when he was 18, NTO started to hang out regularly at La Villa Rouge, and Bar Live, two legendary clubs in the South of France. At the time, German minimal techno music was booming and Anthony Favier would spend his nights listening to Stephan Bodzin, James Holden, or the very beginnings of Paul Kalkbrenner: “My biggest music crush of all time”.  The evocative power of music, strong kicks and the unifying atmosphere of dancefloors: this is the triple focus that inspired him to create and produce music without going through the usually mandatory DJ phase. NTO would spend nights eyes set on his computer, trying to replicate songs he heard the nights before in clubs, the exact same way he would cover “Hotel California” when he was younger, or play Syd Barrett’s psychedelic chords. Q&A and Global Vibe Radio 186 Feat. JKS

This week’s guest on Global Vibe Radio is a young French artist who has been making waves in his country’s underground scene and beyond thanks to a sound that blends modern techno with old-school rave elements.

JKS’ energetic sets are charged with trance and rave influences, transmitting a high intensity that only very few are able to. With his own label MolekĂŒl, he has released true ravey bombs that have been a staple of international Techno artists like Kobosil, I Hate Models or SHDW & Obscure Shape for a long time.

Along with his label partner Mayeul, Valentin makes up the live duo ‘Jawbreakers’, a name that perfectly fits what to expect during a set from the two artists. A regular in the Paris warehouse rave scene, and building his way up around the best European clubs and festivals, JKS has recently released three propelling techno cuts on Regal’s Involve Records in the name of his Invaders EP, which you can find here.

Enjoy JKS’ exclusive mix for Global Vibe Radio and read on for our exclusive interview with the French artist.

Karabine: My Top 5 French Techno Tracks

Citizen Records, run by the artist formerly known as Vitalic, link with unique vinyl pressing service Diggers Factory to present a new EP from Karabine, a fresh project from a seasoned French producer.

This new pseudonym is to allow the artist to make music free from any genre constraint and explore electronic, techno, IDM, industrial, breaks, ambient and whatever else, often with influences from British artists such as Aphex Twin, Luke Slater and Daniel Avery. There is a maturity to his music, which is made using hardware machines, and it comes with a real intensity and personality that mixes up restrained violence, industrial tones and raw melodies.

After this debut 12″, Karabine is set to release an album later in the year. This first part of the story, though, is already mightily impressive.

On demand pressing service Diggers Factory believe that vinyl records are the best way to consume and value music, so they offer two solutions. First, funding projects allow any artist or label to produce records without spending any money—all that is required is a minimum amount of pre-orders and Diggers Factory manage the rest including pressing, mastering, distribution, logistics. Secondly, they run Limited Edition projects where they work with renowned artists on original projects and reissues of forgotten or unexpected albums.

With his Octobre Rouge EP now out since the beginning of the month, we asked Karabine to share his five favorite French techno tracks.
