A Recap of DGTL Festival at Amsterdam Dance Event 2018

Located in Northern Amsterdam, NDSM Docklands was a quick ride into Amsterdam’s industrial area, a venue not too far from Shelter and located in a large space.

The Docklands is easily reachable via free ferry from Amsterdam Centraal, allowing people to arrive by foot and bycile also.

The Dutch built ships there in the 1980s and the empty buildings were then squatted. This made NDSM Docklands attractive to creative talents who have since built a plethora of bars, restaurants, and art in the area. This also makes it a home for great techno and house events, being that it is in an industrial area away from everything.

We arrived there soon after the party began and walked into a giant warehouse area that split into 2 directions. When we got there, Floorplan had just began playing their usual melodic and groovy set along with some gentle techno to warm things up.

Bicep then followed Floorplan with their live set which was quite mellow compared to the thumping set from Mall Grab at the other stage. Some were more into the lighter sounds and some were more into the heavier sounds, so it was good to have options.

Nina Kraviz then followed with some minimal sounds combined with some a bit heavier, before The Wizard aka Jeff Mills closed the night off with his signature techno sounds.

On Day 2, Jamie Jones’ Paradise took over the space, giving attendees a dose of warm tech house for the night. We arrived when Maya Jane Coles was on the decks as she played a bit harder techno than she normally does. Luuk van Dijk took to the other stage with some even heavier sounds that had the crowd erupting.

Dubfire then took to a live set playing an array of Sci-Tec atmospheric minimal sounds. It was then the turn of Jamie Jones to take over the decks while Darius Syrossian was bringing his set to a close in the other room and leaving way to Detlef & Latmun who played back-to-back. Detroit techno legend Derrick May was given the responsibility to close out the night while Richy Ahmed closed the other stage.

DGTL was surely filled with lots of energy and great sound and music. Everyone was dancing the entire night and into the early morning. When the party finally ended at 7am, many decided to keep going past that, filled with the energy that DGTL’s lineups provided over both days.

The location of the event, coupled with its varied lineups featuring Detroit techno greats, tech house staltwarts, lo-fi and deep house prowess was the perfect combination for a lineup that catered to people with varied taste.

DGTL Brings Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Jamie Jones, and more to ADE 2018

Based in Holland, DGTL has become one of the most successful festivals in the Dutch scene. Headquartered at the NDSM Docklands, DGTL has had three straight sold-out editions since its first rendition in Spring of 2013. The festival has been extremely selective with the line-ups

DGTL was first launched in the Spring of 2013 in the Netherlands where it introduced a forward-thinking concept with a more selective approach to curation. The festival quickly sold out for the next few years and quickly established it’s reputation as one of the premiere festival brands throughout the Netherlands and the world. It then expanded the brand to Barcelona and Amsterdam Dance Event merging music with art. They then went meat free in 2016 offering no meat options for food at their festival and later on launched DGTL Records with the first release by KiNK.

Cultural and artistic performances are a staple for DGTL creating an innovative experience that is both memorable and awe-inspiring. The organizers seek out the latest in technological innovations and advances to create an unforgettable experience. DGTL’s Revolution puts sustainability at the forefront making fundamental changes to their setup and day-to-day activities. The organizers search for the latest ways to reduce waste, lower CO2 emissions, increase awareness with themes like “Going Veggie”.

The venue is a 10 minute boat ride from Amsterdam Central Station on the NDSM-Werf docklands in Amsterdam North. The site faces Neveritaweg’s waterfront offering spectacular views of the IJ river and is an ancient shipyard with old industrial buildings, abandoned wharfs and warehouses, rusty shipwrecks, and derelict containers. The whole area is covered in graffiti and street art to provide the ultimate party location.

The one and only Jeff Mills chose DGTL to be his one and only show this year at ADE together with none other than his longtime mate Robert Hood and his daughter which make up Floorplan. Robert Hood and Jeff Mills go back nearly two decades where they joined forces on Underground Resistance. It is difficult to even look up the history of techno without mention of these two. They will be joined by none other than Nina Kraviz, Mall Grab, and a live set by Bicep on Thursday at the festival’s home, NDSM Docklands.

DGTL will also play host to Jamie Jones’ Paradise on Friday and Bonobo’s Outlier project on Saturday where Bonobo will go back to back with Ame and KiNK. DJ Koze, Mano Le Tough, Tom Trago, and Leon Vynehall will also join Bonobo on the bill as well as newly minted talent such as Tammo Hesselink and Moxie. Jamie Jones will be accompanied by none other than Derrick May, Darrius Syrossian, Maya Jane Coles, Richy Ahmed, Detlef & Latmun, Mark Jenkyns, and Luke van Dijk and will see a live set by Dubfire.

Wednesday nights at Amnesia Ibiza have been Hyte territory since last summer, when the techno-centered residency first landed on the island with bang. While in 2015 the residency was spearheaded by Loco Dice and Maceo Plex, this year the latter has left and launched his own debut Mosaic residency at Pacha Ibiza. Loco Dice will continue to head Hyte with appearances at all except three nights throughout the entire summer.

The 16-week party series will begin on June 1st with a pre-opening party before officially starting on June 29th and ending on October 5th. The roster of talent is deep, with a total of 42 artists set to perform. Others regularly playing the Wednesday night party include Chris Liebing (12 nights), Pan-Pot (11 nights) and Enzo Siragusa who is bringing his Fuse imprint to the Club room on four nights throughout the residency.

This summer, Hyte is promoting a “Yes To All” mentality of inclusion, hoping to bring together a mix of club-goers who enjoy big room techno, tech house and house alike. They will also be hosting 5 after-hours event at Cova Santa, set for June 1st, July 27th, August 10th, August 17th and September 28th. Lineups are still TBA but will likely feature artists that played Amnesia the night before. You can find the full Hyte roster below or through RA’s promoter page.

Robert Hood to Release New Floorplan LP With Daughter

Floorplan

Detroit techno producer Robert Hood is releasing a new LP under the alias Floorplan. Entitled Victorious, the album was produced together with his daughter Lyric Hood.

Hood began producing under the alter-ego in the late 90s, a means to release productions that were funkier and melodic than the straight techno his fans had been accustomed to. Although the project died down for a a few years, it was revived with a string of EP releases that began in 2010 and culminated with 2013’s Paradise album release.

From this point forward, Hood has announced that Floorplan will remain a duo project. He will continue producing techno solo and is set to release a new album and three EPs through Dekmantel soon. His daughter Lyric has been known to DJ with him, most recently during a Boiler Room performance last fall and at on as big a stage as Movement Detroit in 2014. She co-produced several of the tracks on Victorious, set to be released in full on June 10th through Hood’s own M-Plant label.

This past week Hood was featured in our celebration for Black History Month and billed for a Hip-Hop set to take place during Weather Festival in Paris.
