Performance anxiety

98% of Female Artists Suffer Perfomance Anixety, According to New Survey

A new survey has found that 98% of female artists suffer from performance anxiety, with many citing their gender as the issue.

The survey, which was conducted by Pirate Studios, found that female artists were 28% more likely to experience performance anxiety than their male counterparts – and also saw that many cited their gender as the reason for feeling this.

Gender Parity in Electronic Music by 2020

International Music Summit (IMS), the three-day educational and inspirational thought leadership platform and leading authority on electronic music, celebrated its 10thanniversary this year and once again brought forward some of the key issues facing the electronic music industry in 2017. Chief amongst these are the gender imbalances in studios and on festival and party line-ups, where only 5% of producers and 17% of festival headliners are female.

Became of this Smirnoff has launched an initiative to join forces to commit to double the number of female headliners, as announced on International Women’s Day.

Smartbar Chicago Will Host Series of Workshops With Focus on Women in Music

Last month Chicago’s Smartbar, the famed clubbing institution that has been running in the city’s Northside for over 30 years, announced the return of its Daphne series with a list of club nights featuring some of the best dance music talent in the world.

Smartbar has hosted Daphne events in the past, club nights focused on representing the role of woman-identifying and genderqueer artists in the electronic music industry. So while not totally new, the upcoming Daphne: A Women’s Movement In Dance Music is a month-long festivity that continues with that same mission, but does it tenfold within a shorter period of time.

On top of the club nights already announced throughout the month of March, with artists like Nina Kraviz, The Black Madonna, Cassy, Octo Octa, Honey Dijon and more all scheduled to play, Daphne and Smartbar will also be holding a string of workshops open to the public and participants of all skill levels. The workshops will address topics such as artist promotion, DJ mechanics, queer religious figures and more.

Together Festival: San Francisco’s All-Female Lineup

Together Fest

Introducing Together Festival, a day-long event to be held at San Francisco’s Armory club on October 8th, featuring an all-female artist cast.

Gender equality has been a point of major relevant discussion in the dance music industry for years now, just as it still remains a big talking point in the world at large, as evidenced by the current U.S. presidential elections. Yet, current statistics highlight what remains a problem that is far from being resolved: women only make up about 10.8 per cent of major music festival lineups.

Together Festival is set to be headlined by Chicago’s Dani Deahl and Brazzabelle, with Uniiqu3, Little Boots, TT the Artist and more scheduled to play. On top of music, the festivity will also provide space to exhibit technology and art all within the 4,000 capacity venue.

Organized by San Francisco DJ Ms. Jackson, Together Festival seeks to “turn the power of women DJs and artists into one night in San Francisco that can’t be missed.”

Jackson talked with SF Gate about the vision behind the 18+ event, “We asked, ‘How do we highlight some of these artists that should be getting headlining spots at festivals but aren’t because of their gender?'” Jackson said, “We know that there is an incredible amount of female talent in electronic music, in hip-hop, in house music. There should be a mainstream music festival that has an all-female lineup.”
