Following on his promise to focus on and highlight his city’s nightlife, the Mayor of London is looking to appoint the UK’s first Night Czar to shape London’s future as a 24-hour city. This comes on the heels of the recent controversy with fabric London, which remained closed at the orders of the Metropolitan Police and Islington Council following two recent drug overdose deaths. Sadiq Khan, London’s Mayor, stepped in encouraging officials involved to get to the root to the problem without keeping the venue closed.

Now, the Mayor has launched a search for the UK’s first Night Czar, a new position that will be charged with championing the value of London’s night time culture whilst developing and diversifying London’s night time economy.

The official job insert specifies that the following duties will be required of this new position:

“Working with the Mayor, the Night Time Commission, local authorities, businesses, the Metropolitan Police Service, Transport For London and other agencies, the Night Czar will create a vision for London as 24-hour city and a roadmap showing how the vision will be realised. The Night Czar will have proven leadership ability, public profile and convening power, plus a thorough understanding of the night time economy and the ability to work in a political environment.

This is initially a one-year officeholder post with a time commitment of up to 2.5 days per week.

London’s diversity is its biggest asset and we strive to reflect London’s diversity in all GLA appointments. We welcome applications from everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, faith or disability.”

You can apply for the position, which pays £35,000, until Monday 12 September at 23:59 GMT. Interviews will take place at: City Hall on Wednesday 21 September 2016.

The Nightlife Industry Speaks Out Against fabric London Closing, Asking London Mayor Sadiq Khan to Intervene

London Mayor

On a week where countless were shocked to learn that the Islington Council and London’s Met Police suspended fabric’s license indefinitely, many members of the nightlife industry took to social media to express their support for the club.

The venue was originally shut down for just one weekend, before officials took the above measures promising to conduct a full review of the club’s license within 28 days. This all came as a result of two recent drug overdose deaths inside the club.

Various important members of the world’s nightlife scene are now speaking up against the actions by officials that some are worried may not only lead to permanent closure of the club, but also set a dangerous precedent for nightlife in London, the United Kingdom and beyond. As can be seen below, several of the world’s most prominent electronic music artists are asking London Mayor Sadiq Khan to step in and help resolve the issues rather than allow the club to remain closed.

Islington Council has Suspended fabric London’s License, Closing the Club Indefinitely

Following the announced temporary closure of fabric London over the weekend, the local Islington Council has gone a step further by suspending the club’s license indefinitely.

While it was originally believed that the venue would remain shut for just a weekend as investigations began on the recent overdose deaths of two patrons, the club has now had its license suspended indefinitely following a review requested by the borough’s police team. A full review hearing to decide the club’s fate will be conducted later this month.

“Officers felt the need to act due to concerns about the safety of those attending the club because of the supply of class A drugs in the venue and the recent deaths of two young men linked to the club,” stated a Met spokesman.

An Islington Council spokesman responded: “After two recent drug-related deaths, the Metropolitan Police applied for an interim suspension of Fabric’s licence.

“Fabric agreed not to contest this application, and a licensing sub-committee has today suspended Fabric’s licence.

“This will be followed by a review of Fabric’s licence within 28 days.”

Fabric announced on Saturday that all ticket holders will be refunded via Resident Advisor.

fabric London Temporarily Closed Following Recent Overdose Deaths

The iconic fabric in London will remain closed temporarily this weekend in order to investigate the recent deaths of two 18-year old men from drug overdoses.

The club announced the closure via a Facebook post today:

Unfortunately, the London venue has had to endure some tumultuous relationships with local authorities recently, including an appeal against Islington Council in December of 2015. The council had attempted to impose strict licensing conditions on the venue including sniffer dogs and ID scans for every attendee.

Alan Fitzpatrick Mixes fabric 87

alan-fitzpatrick“I really wanted to deliver a mix that had a timeless quality about it and that contained tracks that people were not very familiar with already. Crucial to achieving this was the special edits that feature in the mix, as well as the exclusive and unreleased material that I was able to include which I hope everyone enjoys listening to.” – Alan Fitzpatrick

Alan Fitzpatrick dominates in the era of techno, and it comes as no surprise that Fabric Records has invited him to mix fabric 87. Alan Fitzpatrick has been a part of Adam Beyer’s Drumcode family since his debut album release in 2005 and continues to rise through consistent hard work and quality releases.  Read more

Ricardo Villalobos, Ben Sims, Jamie Jones and More to Play Fabric 16th Birthday

Fabric London

Earlier this month Fabric announced that they’re gearing up for an epic weekend marathon to commemorate their 16th birthday. The initial report was that it will begin on October 16th with esteemed artists from the drum and bass community, with Fabric keeping the house and techno acts “under wraps” for the time being. Well, the official houslineup is revealed, and let’s just say a trip to London is worth contemplating.

Room 1 at Fabric for the celebration will feature the best that underground electronic music has to offer. Throughout the marathon the booth at Fabric will be graced by Craig Richards, Ricardo Villalobos, Ben Sims, Matrixxman, Marcel Dettmann, Steffi, Virginia, Jamie Jones, DJ Qu, Felix Dickinson, Prosumer, Terry Francis, Paranoid London, as well as individual sets from Apollonia members, Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom, and Shonky.

Seeing as it’s a marathon, it’s appropriate that an ample amount of Berghain residents are present on the lineup. That said, the lineup is comprised of many artists who are all quite familiar with the vibe at Fabric, and all will certainly be in good spirits for the occasion.

Expect nothing but excellence when this legendary weekend rolls around in London. Tickets and more info for the Fabric 16th Birthday Marathon can be found here.
