Erick Morillo’s Death Officially Ruled An Accidental Drug Overdose

Drug overdose has been confirmed as the cause of death for Erick Morillo.

The official autopsy has confirmed that the September 1st death of famed DJ Erick Morillo inside his Miami Beach home was accidental and drug-related.

On Tuesday, the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office released the results of the autopsy and toxicology report, which confirmed that the 49-year-old, who has been accused by more than 10 women of sexual assault and rape, died of “acute ketamine toxicity” combined with MDMA and cocaine.

Demanding Accountability, #ForTheMusic Tackles Sexual Abuse

2020 has been a year of awakening and for others, it’s also been a reckoning. Artists who felt untouchable have been proven quite otherwise. Bassnectar, Billy Kenny, and the late Erick Morillo are among some of the names that surface when it comes to addressing the pervasive issue of sexual violence within the music industry. They’ve all been “canceled” or at least have helped show why it’s (still) important to continue talking about it to bring the dance music industry back to its roots. #ForTheMusic is the first step to creating a safer environment. What is Sexual Assault? Unpacking Its Definition

In light of recent accusations of sexual assault against Erick Morillo, Bassnectar and Billy Kenny, it’s important we all understand the definition of sexual assault and are able to fully contextualize it within the music space. Sexual assault is a form of sexual violence and can be defined in different ways. But first and foremost, the thing to fully grasp is this: it is never the victim’s fault, period. Drugs and alcohol are commonplace in the music industry and nightlife in general, and all too often non-consensual drugging plays a role in sexual assaults. Regardless, whether non-consensual drugging takes place or not, victim-blaming remains commonplace with “responsibility” for the assault levied on the victim’s use of alcohol and drugs, rather than on the perpetrator of the assault. This is not ok and has been used far too long to justify predatory behavior that we must eradicate not just from the music space, but from society at large.

Despite the rampant substance (ab)use in the music space, we, its community members, need to start denormalizing rape culture and violence against our community members, and in particular women and trans.

Separate Art and Artist

Opinion: We Cannot Continue To Separate The Art From The Artist

The events surrounding Erick Morillo‘s death have brought an important subject to the forefront of our industry’s conversation: how can we continue to separate art from the artist when the artist is responsible for violence, rape or abuse?

Erick Morillo was found dead at his Miami Beach home on Tuesday, September 1.

On August 6, 2020, Morillo was arrested and charged with sexual battery on a woman for alleged rape. In December 2019, Morillo and his accuser were working as DJs at a private party on Star Island in Miami Beach and later went to his Miami Beach home. She told detectives that she was drunk at Morillo’s home and declined several sexual advances before passing out in an empty bedroom and later waking nude with him beside her, also nude.

In 2004 Harry “Choo Choo” Romero released What Happened, an EP on that came armed with a strong, dance floor-ready Dub remix of the same-title track by none other than Erick Morillo.

Featuring Jessica Eve on vocals, the same-title track “What Happened” was undeniably one of the hits of that year. Catchy and fast-packed, the minimal looped chunky track  was part of that signature sound that characterized the rising career of the one they called Choo Choo and his remixer for the occasion, Subliminal boss Erick Morillo.

Now, Incorrect Music chief Anthony Attalla has taken the track and given it a complete rework, the finished product already receiving major play by big-name DJs throughout the summer. While the catchy acapella remains,  Attalla’s power lays in the unmistakable and signature step and bounce he has added, as well as the sensual dreamlike melody that permeates the track before kicking back into full groove mode. The tech-heavy result is nothing short of fantastic: a dance floor-ready anthem that has been making people groove throughout summer in dance floors throughout the world.

“Rony Style” – An Interview With Producer and DJ Rony Seikaly

RonySeikaly
Back in Italy when I was a young teenager, I discovered basketball and the distant yet near-at-heart world of NBA – I became a Bulls fan and would later go on to move to Chicago for college.

Chicago was not only the home of the Bulls but also the birthplace of house music, and on a particular Saturday night in January 2013 Spybar was hosting a 6ft 10in DJ by the name of Rony Seikaly. I immediately recognized the name and how could I not? As a Lebanese-born American pro-basketball player, Seikaly was the Miami Heat’s first ever franchise draft pick back in 1988 and went on to set a series of team records, many of which still stand today. But that very cold winter night, three-hundred or so house fans cramped that dark powerful basement in Chicago to hear him play. He was our music selector for the night – and a fantastic selector at that. There was a flair about his music, a distinctive groove that hypnotized everyone present and kept them dancing late into the night. I was immediately a fan, and from that moment on I would take the opportunity to see Seikaly play any time he was in town or when I happened to travel to Miami Music Week.

Erick Morillo “Something for Carl Cox” out on Subliminal Records

ErickMorillo21

“I have never had a record given to me with my name in the title! It’s always a hard thing to do because of the expectations of that, but Erick came up with an amazing track that I would play in my sets in clubs or festivals, as it has the Coxy sound which I love to play. It’s funky, pumping tech-house energy and I feel very proud to play this track. Thank you Erick!” – Carl Cox, July 2015

Just released on Subliminal Records, Erick Morillo’s track Something for Carl Cox is a banging tech-house tribute to the techno powerhouse producer. The track is energetically fresh with a sexy piano stab near the end, making it an ideal tune for the club or beach party.

Erick Morillo is a celebrated legend at the roots of house music and will be making the rounds this year as a monthly resident of Space Ibiza. Morillo tested the ropes of the track at Space Ibiza and Ministry of Sound, and Carl Cox himself dropped this huge tune at EDC Las Vegas and at Light Nightclub last month.
