Richie Hawtin: The Moment I Felt My Career Was Over

In the genre of electronic music, Richie Hawtin is considered an industry pillar. As one of the pioneering techno artists in the music scene, Hawtin has enjoyed a very successful career playing to sold-out crowds all over the world, headlining major festivals, running several world-renowned labels, founding some of the most talked-about party series and brands and even launching his own ENTER.Sake and PLAYdifferently DJ mixer equipment lines.

As such, it is hard to imagine that at one point Hawtin’s career came into serious doubt, but that is exactly what happened more than 20 years ago when the man himself did indeed think his career was truly over.

It’s Time To Start Saying Goodbye to Space Ibiza As We Know It

That Space Ibiza is about to undergo massive changes is not news. Last year it was announced that Pepe RosellĂł’s 27-year reign as owner of the club was ending following the 2016 summer season, after which the club’s lease will be taken over by Matutes Group, the owners of UshuaĂŻa across the street. Following the announcement, Richie Hawtin decided that ENTER.Ibiza would end its residency at the club, while Carl Cox made it abundantly clear that 2016 would be the last summer for Music Is Revolution on the island, citing RosellĂł’s departure as head of venue as one of the primary reasons for this change.

There has been a lot of speculation since on the exact future of the venue. We know that Roselló currently owns the world-famous Space Ibiza brand, and when asked about plans for the space in the coming years, the CEO of Palladium Hotel Group and VP of the Matutes Group, Abel Matutes Prats stated, “Why change when we don’t have to?”

He told told the Diario de Ibiza, “We want to take care and continue with the project to make Platja d’en Bossa an entertainment area.” He went on to categorically deny rumors that Space would be turned into a shopping center, specifying that the club’s current “class 41” license limits the venue’s uses to leisure and recreation. This means that it cannot be turned into a hotel or merchandise operation.

What did become clear from his interview, is that while exact plans aren’t decided yet, the club will be turned into an operation that mostly caters to the same audience UshuaĂŻa attracts. That is a more VIP-centric crowd than Space has been known for.

He specified, “Obviously we want to keep it as a club, but also want to dedicate it to the audience in which we are now focusing, which will be complementary to Ushuaïa.”

This year’s UshuaĂŻa residencies are predominantly EDM-focused, with only Ants on Saturdays dedicated to more underground sounds. The rest of the week sees David Guetta take over on Mondays, Hardwell on Tuesdays, Axwell and Ingrosso on Wednesdays, Steve Aoki and Oliver Heldens alternating on Thursdays, Tinie Tempah on Fridays and Armin van Buuren on Sundays.

It is unsure whether Tale Of Us’ new Afterlife residency, which starts this summer, will continue on once keys for the club change hands. This may truly be the last season to enjoy Space Ibiza as we have all known it, after which it may be time to say goodbye and prepare ourselves for the changes the owners of UshuaĂŻa will introduce.

Video Shows Richie Hawtin Introducing New DJ Gear to ENTER.Ibiza Guest DJs

PlayDifferently

As we reported in January, Richie Hawtin partnered up with former Allen & Heath pioneer Andy Rigby-Jones to create Play Differently, a collaborative partnership that aims to expand the spectrum of DJ creativity through new technology and hardware.

At NAMM 2016 (in Annheim, California), Richie officially unveiled the project as a working collaboration of friends new and old, including a partnership with the Audiotonix group responsible for the innovation and distribution of such renowned audio brands as DiGiCo and the aforementioned Allen & Heath. The first prototype went into testing use as early as 2014, and we learned that it had since been made available through various stages of its project at select leading worldwide events, including Glastonbury in the UK and the ENTER.Ibiza party series that Richie spearheaded at Space.

Richie has now released a video promoting Play Differently and highlighting some of the key events of the past couple of years. Footage shows the M_nus boss introducing the still-to-be-unveiled product to the likes of Chris Liebing, Marcell Dettmann, Josh Wink, Tiga and DJ Tech Tool’s Ean Golden.

While unclear whether this is the case, the video includes clips of Dubfire, Recondite, Matador and Gaiser performing during the last few seasons of ENTER’s now ended residency in Ibiza, leading to the assumption that they tested out the prototype live at Space.

Richie Hawtin’s ENTER Leaves Ibiza

Enter

This morning we were hit with the news that as of this season, Richie Hawtin’s ENTER is leaving Space Ibiza and the island. This means that Space, which has already seen Carl Cox announce its departure after the coming season, will most likely be hosting a new concept party on Thursdays as of summer 2016.

The real motives behind the decision are not entirely evident from Hawtin’s Facebook post where he announced the move, but speculation has it that it may be due to Space being bought out by the group that owns UshuaĂŻa across the street. Space Ibiza’s long-time owners and manager, in particular Pepe Rosello, had built strong ties of friendship with many of the club’s residents over the years and it’s unclear whether this has any bearing on the party moves for both ENTER and Cox’s Revolution.

Hawtin does clarify that ENTER is not ending, but rather the project “will continue to explore site specific events around the world based upon our core principles: Music. Sake. Technology. Experience.”
