Digging Deeper with FBK

American producer FBK returns to Rekids with his debut album entitled More Stories From The Future.

Long-term house and techno heavyweight, Kevin M. Kennedy aka FBK has a career spanning three decades. Debuting with a seminal release on Frictional in ’97, Kennedy went on to appear on labels like diametric. and Urban Kickz, whilst more recent releases have landed on Barba Records, Suspected (alongside Paul Mac) and Rekids – kick-starting the label’s Special Projects series. With a close bond to Detroit greats like Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, Daniel Bell, Claude Young, Keith Tucker and Sherard Ingram (DJ Stingray), FBK is considered a true contemporary. Returning to Rekids for his inaugural long player, ‘More Stories From The Future’ demonstrates his versatility within the studio and mirrors his genre-bending approach to performing, both as a DJ and live act.

‘Modular Life’ brings deep resonating lows, liquid pads and clinical percussion, before the psychedelic vocals of ‘I’ll Sit Back, You’ll Jack’ join smashing snares and intensifying synths. Exhibiting erratic sound design, ‘Layers of Fear’ comes complete with pumping drums and intense hi-hats, until ‘Hassling’ offers a stepping groove, thick pad stabs and deep sub movement. ‘Headless’ gets modular heavy with bubbling effects and shuffling rhythm, preceding the driving kicks of ‘Gate Closing’ where ghostly vocals meet enveloping acid growls. ‘The Boxing Lesson’ delivers punchy kicks and steppy snares under lofty atmospherics, ending on ‘The Finisher’s Heart’ where evolving detuned synths flow over powerful percussion.

We sat down with Kevin to talk about his career, the album, and much more.

Digging Deeper with AVION

Crossing boss AVION delivers the label’s debut album with ten atmospheric techno cuts including a collaboration alongside Ninja Tune favourite Emika.

Berlin based producer AVION’s structured techno has found home on respected labels like Index Marcel Fengler, District 66, Stress Research and Pure. However, his own label Crossing – launched in 2013 – has hosted the majority of his work when not releasing music by Pfirter, Doka, The Automatic Message and Milton Bradley (as Doomsday Device). It only makes sense then that AVION’s debut longplayer sees him return to his imprint.

Opening with the ominous heartbeat and metallic drones of ‘New Day’, AVION’s album quickly takes things into a murky analog direction with crackling ‘Errata’ and its twisted effects before ‘Stones’ follows with its offbeat drums as sanguine chords begin to shine through. Syncopated percussion follows with ‘Adamant’ as twisted synths continually sweep, leading into ‘Untrod’ and its scintillating chimes and mesmerising textures.

Squelchy acid licks join otherworldly pads in ‘Scan’ until the dystopian ‘Evasion’ builds in tension as lo-fi drums join oscillating bass. Pitter-patter drums and pulsating stabs are next in ‘Firebox’, making way for the harrowing ‘Street Lights’ that utilizes the ethereal voice of Emika. Finally, ‘Nebul’ provides a shadowy finale with a crystalline aesthetic complete with a cacophony of intricate details.

6AM sat down with AVION to talk about the landmark album and dig deeper into his musical projects, that of the label and, of course, a few personal things!

Digging Deeper with HEX Barcelona’s PØLI and Lorenzo Raganzini

Esteemed Barcelona techno institution HEX launched a brand-new record label with four original cuts from its Italian Co- Founders PØLI, and Lorenzo Raganzini with remixes by Regal, Insolate, Nico Moreno, VII Circle and Zanias.

Since its birth in 2014, Barcelona’s HEX has become one of techno’s most formidable brands; organising events at venues and festivals such as INPUT, Razzmatazz, Brunch –In and DGTL Barcelona, establishing a devout following with its matchless crowd, not to mention booking many of techno’s finest names like Jeff Mills, Ben Klock, Rebekah, Blawan, Ben Sims, Oscar Mulero, I Hate Models, Marcel Dettmann, Dax J, Paula Temple and DVS1. At the core of HEX is its co-founders and residents PØLI, and Lorenzo Raganzini, who now launch HEX Recordings to diffuse its own sound and cultivate talents of the international scene and already established acts.

Collaborating for the label’s debut release, PØLI, and Lorenzo Raganzini went on a 10-day isolated retreat in a professional recording studio in the Spanish countryside – with no method of communication with the outside world – to produce the label’s debut release. The result is four quality techno tracks which were later granted to remixes from five respected techno artists; Fleisch’s Zanias, Involve head Regal, Out of Place boss Insolate, ex-founder of Blvckplvgue Nico Moreno and Rapid Eye Movement co-founders VII Circle. A follow up digital release will include further remixes from VSK, Alignment, AWB, Farceb and Svarog.

You can now watch a documentary with HEX Recordings founders PØLI and Lorenzo Raganzini. Collaborating for the label’s debut release, PØLI, and Lorenzo Raganzini went on a 10-day isolated retreat in a professional recording studio in the Spanish countryside – with no method of communication with the outside world.

Digging Deeper with Gettoblaster

Residing in the underbelly of U.S. dance culture are Gettoblaster, staunch conservationists of the classic ghetto house and tech sounds that arose from Chicago and Detroit. They formed in 2014 over their shared background and influences, solidifying their studio bond with an arsenal of tracks perfectly engineered to keep modern crowds on the dance floor whilst maintaining the soulful elements that made them fall in love with dance music in the first place.

The infectious energy they poured into each of their releases caught fire quickly among underground dance heads, leading to the formation of their own label not long after their formation. Today, the duo maintain a heavy touring schedule, where they’re regularly seen in dark, raw spaces bringing the heat onto the dance floor.

Their latest release sees them joining forces with DJ Funk—one of ghetto house’s original pioneers and greatest purveyors. Landing on DIRTYBIRD following a jaunt at one of the campouts, “Get Dat” is a steamy piece with jacking bass and percussion that fits well into both the artists’ and the label’s aesthetic.

Curious to dive deeper into their philosophy, we grabbed Gettoblaster for a chat on all things ghetto house—with some cheeky questions at the end.

Digging Deeper with 999999999

999999999, which reads as “Nine Times Nine,” is an abstract concept from the minds of two people who do not feel the need to define it.

It is spontaneous, random, unlimited. This project, officially started in July 2016, has already affected several important Clubs and Parties in different cities in Europe and aroused much interest even outside the continent.
