Screen Shot 2016-05-20 at 10.52.26 AM

Techno and house and house fans rejoice!

With Movement’s 10th Anniversary just around the corner, 70+ day and after-parties to choose from and a plethora of artist playing the festival across three days and six stages, we decided that it’s time for the music to do the talking.

It’s likely that even the most seasoned of electronic music veteran is familiar with the more than 125 artists playing the festival this year, and it is for that reason that we decided to compile a special Movement Detroit 2016 Artist Playlist on SoundCloud for your use.

We scoured the entire SoundCloud platform for live sets and mixes from each artist playing in Hart Plaza on Memorial Day Weekend. We tried to post the most recent or telling piece of music compilation we could find for each name, in order to give listeners a fairly up-to-date understanding of the artist’s sound and what to expect from them in Detroit.

The result is a 119 track compilation incorporating over 165 hours of music organized in alphabetical order. Please be understanding that not every artist featured on the lineup had recent live sets or mixes available on the SoundCloud platform, while others had none at all.

We hope you enjoy it. Share the article with other friends making their pilgrimage to Detroit – music is love, and sharing is caring!

Oh and don’t forget to enter our contest for 2 GA tickets to the fest!

Humble Beginnings with Chuck Daniels

Although Detroit is synonymous with techno, the Motor City has long held a deep connection with Chicago, the birthplace of house music. It is along the I-90 corridor that music has influenced some of the biggest artists to come out of both genres, with techno finding a home in the Windy City and house gaining respectful representation a four-hour drive due east in Detroit.

It is along this powerful connection that Chuck Daniels discovered himself as an artist. Despite deeply-seeded roots in Detroit, he found strong influence in the house sounds emanating from both Chicago and New York, rounding him into an artist able to select the ideal track from a vast palette of underground electronic sub-genres. Undoubtedly skilled, he went on to start his own “Sampled Detroit” imprint, a clear homage to the city he has continued to call home throughout his career. From promoting his own parties to guest appearances on support of high-caliber touring artists making their way through Detroit, Daniels’ own sets have elevated him to well-respected status among listeners and industry peers alike.

Thanks to long-standing and mutual appreciation, Daniels has enjoyed a working collaboration with Paxahau for several years now, and will be playing Movement for the fourth time this coming Memorial Day weekend with a prime-time late 5:45-7pm slot at the Opportunity Detroit stage. He is also scheduled to play alongside Danny Tenaglia at Populux for the Official Movement Pre-Party on Friday the 27th of May, and will be hosting his own Cosmic Disco Official After-Party on Saturday night. Hosted by his Sampled Detroit label, the latter will featured an impressive cast of guest artists including Kenny Glasgow, Daniel Bell, Doc Martin, Gene Farris, Andrés, as well as local up-and-coming artists such as Loren and Ryan Dahl. To conclude the weekend, he is also scheduled for a special back-to-back rooftop set with friend and fellow producer Oliver Dollar. You can find all party information on our Movement Party Guide.

We had the chance to sit down with Daniels to talk about his start in the scene and the road ahead. Check it out make sure to catch him in Detroit over Movement weekend!

Matthew Dear Releases First Album in Ten Years as Audion: “Alpha”

Audion

He’s back! Audion is set to release his first album in ten years this coming June.

Dear signed up Alpha to Berlin-based imprint !K7 for the release, a shift from most of his previously released LPs that have come out on Spectral Sound. Spectral Sound also hosted Audion’s Audion X compilation back in 2013.

Alpha is naturally techno-focused and contains a total of thirteen tracks. The album’s artwork comes courtesy of Dear’s longtime artist collaborator, Will Calcutt.

The album track “Destroyer” was debuted on the Boiler Room and introduced to SoundCloud with a pretty telling note: “The mind bending “Destroyer” stands out in its warped, cyclical grandeur. Its distorted synth and tenacious bass provides listeners with the full bodied dancefloor flavour they have so eagerly anticipated.”

Bandcamp is offering audio clips of the entire album. Pre-order the album via !K7 here.

Full tracklist for Alpha, which is out on June 10th, can be found below:

Movement Detroit Releases Stage Info and Set Times for 2016

Movement2

This coming May, Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit is celebrating 10 years of life at the core of the birth city of techno with a line-up that brings together legends of the famed genre, popular up-and-comers in the underground world, current house favorites from across the globe and a small roster of signature eclectic acts.

This year, those making the pilgrimage to Detroit will be witnessing the first ever Kraftwerk 3D performance at Hart Plaza, with Modeselektor and Dubfire’s Hybrid show both set to complete the headlining spots at the festivals’ main stage over the weekend. Paxahau has also decided to change things around a little, adding different sounds to an Underground Stage that is usually chock-block full of hard techno, also placing Richie Hawtin’s PLAYdifferentlyShowcase at the Beatport stage by the Detroit River – with Richie closing out the night with a two-hour set – and inaugurating the first-ever Acid House devoted stage at the festival with the likes of DJ Pierre, Boys Noize and Nina Kraviz all set to perform.

The stage programme and set times are now out, allowing attendees to plan their entire Memorial Day Weekend with as much ease as possible. While there’s bound to be plenty of conflicts with Phase I and Phase II lineups of such size, there is no doubt that as always the entire weekend will be filled with top-notch music and amazing performances.

Check out the release below and make sure you also check out our Detroit City Travel Guide to ready yourself for the trip. The guide is complete with recommendations that cover travel, accommodation, food and other activities to do while in the Motor City.

Robert Hood to Release New Floorplan LP With Daughter

Floorplan

Detroit techno producer Robert Hood is releasing a new LP under the alias Floorplan. Entitled Victorious, the album was produced together with his daughter Lyric Hood.

Hood began producing under the alter-ego in the late 90s, a means to release productions that were funkier and melodic than the straight techno his fans had been accustomed to. Although the project died down for a a few years, it was revived with a string of EP releases that began in 2010 and culminated with 2013’s Paradise album release.

From this point forward, Hood has announced that Floorplan will remain a duo project. He will continue producing techno solo and is set to release a new album and three EPs through Dekmantel soon. His daughter Lyric has been known to DJ with him, most recently during a Boiler Room performance last fall and at on as big a stage as Movement Detroit in 2014. She co-produced several of the tracks on Victorious, set to be released in full on June 10th through Hood’s own M-Plant label.

This past week Hood was featured in our celebration for Black History Month and billed for a Hip-Hop set to take place during Weather Festival in Paris.

Techno Legend Juan Atkins Claims That “The DJ List” Is Racist

JuanAtkins

Every few months a new DJ ranking or list comes out and naturally, opinions abound. The arguments vary depending on the list in question, ranging form the usual “EDM vs underground” to the underrepresentation of female acts.

This week, Detroit techno pioneer Juan Atkins took to his personal Facebook page to express anger at what he perceives is a calculated underrepresentation of black artists on “The DJ List“. The producer and DJ called it “a slap in the face of the entire black race” and went on to announce that he “will lead the crusade for “The DJ List” to be Destroyed, Dismantled, Deleted, and Replaced.” Atkins is quick to point out that only two black artists have made the Top 100 EDM-heavy list.

Understandably, the post got people talking. While many of the commenters pointed out the seeming irrelevance of such lists, Atkins was quick to specify that while they appear to bear little significance, his own DJ fees and those of other black artists would be considerably different if they were represented better on such lists.

Screen Shot 2016-01-28 at 4.10.36 PM

Although a review of the DJ Mag Top 100 list showed a similar tendency with just a couple of black artists represented, Resident Advisor‘s poll told a slightly better story: illustrious names such as Carl Craig, Kerri Chandler, Robert Hood, Carl Cox, Black Coffee, Jeff Mills and Jamie Jones were all in the Top 100. While only RA members can vote for the site’s annual poll and voting takes place over a brief period of a few days, DJ Mag’s Top 100 list has been the subject of controversy for several years due to allegations of corruption and vote rigging.

It is definitely interesting to see that “The DJ List” brought into question by Atkins has an unclear “voting” system. Their website claims that, “leading industry members claim and manage profiles for; djs, labels, clubs, agents, publicists and more. Members participate in our DJ ranking and are presented customized dance music content based around their interests.”

Regardless, Atkins’ words have brought up once again an interesting discussion on the subject of DJ polls and lists. The role of black artists in dance music is of course undisputed, and it stands to reason that artists should be recognized for their craft regardless of genre, gender and race.
