Is The Coachella Family Invading The Rose Bowl?

rosebowl

Miami Music Week has come and gone, and Coachella is next on the list, boasting an incredible (as always) lineup; even if you aren’t attending the festival, Indio is the place to be, with a plethora of pool parties to keep you cool all weekend.

Goldenvoice, the company behind the legendary Coachella festival, will be further expanding its live music conglomerate, adding another three-day festival to its calendar.

The festival, titled “Arroyo Seco Music and Arts Festival,” will be held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. Not many details have been released, although the Pasadena City Council approved a 10-year deal between Goldenvoice and Darryl Dunn (Rose Bowl manager), so it appears as if the festival is here to stay. This event will likely be far out in the future, so stay tuned and be sure to check our site for the latest updates.

Is a Fall Version of Coachella Really Happening?

Coachella

Yes. Or to best answer that question, we can confirm that the idea to make a fall Coachella festival a reality in 2016 is truly “making significant progress.”

The festival’s promoters, Goldenvoice, have been in talks with Indio officials to create a yearly fall edition of the biggest festival in the United States, after it began recognizing market opportunities to expand in 2013.

Considering Indio’s role as the home of not only two weekends of Coachella, but also Stagecoach Country Music Festival and a handful of other smaller festivals, a third larger fall Coachella weekend would truly put the California city on the map as the City of Festivals, with projected city revenue of $1.4m.

The city’s mayor, Glen Miller, talked to The Desert Sun and revealed that he has been in talks with Goldenvoice to create Coachella’s newest expansion plan. Miller sad that “significant progress has been made” adding claims to the belief that the announcement is “imminent.”

This year’s Coachella lineup is impressive as ever, featuring a selection of top-drawer underground acts, the Despacio project and other surprises within a roster headlined by the reunion of LCD Soundsystem and Guns & Roses.

Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk Has Uploaded Music Videos of Solo Work

Thomas Bangalter as one half of Daft Punk

Thomas Bangalter as one half of Daft Punk

The words “Daft Punk” have long been synonymous with fake festival line-ups and 2016 has been no different, with the usual rumors that the French duo could appear at either Coachella or Lollapalooza. There is no doubt that the production duo consisting of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter has helped shape many facets of dance music, in large part thanks to their timeless sound, unique style and that very same elusiveness that has landed them on fake line-ups for years.

While this very same mysteriousness has helped cement their spot as one of dance music’s most sought-after acts, it is their music that has continued to do the real talking thanks to a string of critically acclaimed singles and albums.

Recently, Thomas Bangalter began releasing his solo work through a series of YouTube video uploads. The first to show up was “Music Sounds Better With You,” a fantastic track produced with fellow Stardust band members Alan Braze and Benjamin Diamond on vocals. Later, Bangalter also posted two different renditions of “Club Soda,” a funky track originally released in 1998. There is no doubt that Daft Punk’s signature sound shines through both of Bangalter’s solo work.

You can listen to and watch both videos below.

Bob Moses Perform on The Ellen Degeneres Show

BobMoses

Following a meteoric rise that has seen them rewarded with spots to play at Coachella 2016, Canadian electronic duo Bob Moses made their TV debut today on the Ellen Degeneres Show with a performance of “Tearing Me Up” off last year’s hugely popular Days Gone By album.

The show host introduced group members Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance as personal favorites, sharing with her viewers that she “heard them in the car and immediately called her production staff.” Ellen’s latest brush with electronic music comes after an interview she did on the show last year with Homeland star Claire Danes, where they discussed the actress’ love for techno and experience at Berlin’s world-renowned Berghain.

Later, Ellen personally tweeted, thanking the duo for making their TV debut on her show and making her birthday extra special.

Bob Moses is also set to play two shows in the Los Angeles area this coming April: on Wednesday 13th of April at the Fox Theater Pomona in support of Underworld and the following day at the El Ray Theater in LA with The Black Madonna.

Coachella To Feature Claptone’s Audio-Visual Live Show “Immortal”

Claptone

After the original Coachella line-up was announced, we noticed a small modification was made to specify that Claptone will be bringing his latest audio-video project entitled “Immortal” to the desert. Early last year, news came out of Claptone’s camp that he had partnered with Oscar-nominated creative director Peter Martin to execute a brand-new audio-visual concept for Live shows, which has since made festival debuts at Ultra Music Festival, Melt!, South West Four and Stereosonic.

A YouTube video announcing the revolutionary concept tells us that the project is divided into three distinct chapters – the past, the present and the future – each with its own visual language. Although Claptone has toured for years as a single person, videos and internet chatter seem to suggest that during “Immortal” there are at least two members of the project on stage. Whether it’s because one handles music while the other coordinates the live audio-visual aspect of the show it’s unclear. What is clear, however, is that Coachella will be the second festival in the United States to experience what has been described as a ground-breaking project in dance music.

Coachella Will Feature Despacio’s 50,000-Watt Sound System All Weekend Long

Despacio2

When Coachella released its line-up this week, a few discerning audiophiles noticed that right at the bottom, it read “DESPACIO All Weekend Long”. With no further information, plenty of chatter began on Facebook speculating what that could really mean.

In late 2013, 2manydjs’ David Dawaele explained in an interview with Wired UK that, “with most gigs, people are turned toward the DJs looking at what you are doing. It becomes a performance. With Despacio, the sound is the star. In Manchester, people didn’t want to take pictures with the DJs, but with the stacks.” The star in question was the 11.5-feet-tall stack of speakers built by LCD Soundystem frontman James Murphy together with sound engineer John Klett and both members of 2manydjs.

Despacio’s 50,ooo watt sound was initially built for a special vinyl-only performances in Ibiza. The purpose of the audio project was to showcase an eclectic mix of music, combining new wave, pop and flamenco that would embody the signature Balearic sound Ibiza is famous for. It is with this in mind that the four audio aficionados began to put the system together, initially sketched out based on the infamous sound system of New York’s Paradise Garage.

The drawings continued over the next 6 months and when the opportunity to use the ever-growing sound system in Ibiza fell through, the artist trio found the opportunity to debut it at Manchester International Festival. McIntosh Integrated, best known for the Grateful Dead ‘Wall of Sound,’ was called in to help finish the system with 4.5 tonnes of amps. When all was said and done, all four involved ensured that the aesthetics of the amps matched their quality of sound, finalizing a project that is arguably one of the best sound systems in the world.

Instead of the DJs being a focal point of the performance, the trio’s booth was positioned at the back of the room with the crowd. The purpose for this was to give them the opportunity to listen with those they were playing music to and for, rather than take the attention away from the music.

Despacio1

Despacio played other gigs after Manchester but the project seemingly died down since. The project, designed to encourage DJs to alter the course of the growing “show-spectacle” scene is now returning for a special all-weekend-long performance at Coachella 2016.

No further information has been made available and while we do not know if the speaker system has been upgraded, how it will be run or if it will replace the sound system of an extant stage such as the Yuma Tent, it is safe to at least speculate that other artists might be involved with performing on it. At best, it can be assumed that this may be the case when James and the Dewaele brothers perform as the front-man of LCD Soundsystem and 2manydjs respectively.

In the meantime, we look forward to hearing more about Despacio and how the project will play out over both Coachella weekends in April.

10 Reasons You Shouldn’t Skip the Yuma Tent at Coachella 2016

YumaTent

Two days ago, Coachella released its 2016 line-up amidst the usual mixture of excitement and anticipation. Today tickets went on sale and as always, sold out fast leaving many empty handed. There is no doubt, however, that in the Yuma Tent and beyond Coachella will once again be bristling with quality techno, house and deep-house both weekends.

We went over the entire roster and picked 10 reasons why you should step into the air-conditioned underground heaven during your Coachella weekend. And by 10 reasons, we mean 10 acts that will undoubtedly have you grooving in between your favorite bands and hip-hop acts.

DJ Koze

This is a no-brainer. The German producer and DJ rarely visits the States and when he does it’s usually for gigs on the East Coast. He last played in California four years ago so this may be the best chance to catch him in action for a while for many of those at Coachella. Regardless, however, it’s his music that does the talking and the testament of his talent comes from a 2015 touring schedule that has seen him play at Watergate, Fabrik, Time Warp, Verboten, XOYO and several Ibiza clubs just to name a few.

Cassy
Catherine Britton, aka Cassy, has been leading the roles of females in dance music for over a decade now. She discovered her love for techno in Berlin and has since worked with acclaimed artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano and Steve Bug while holding guest spots at the city’s world-known Panorama Bar. A DC-10 Ibiza regular, Cassy has had diverse releases on the likes of Playhouse, Perlon, Ostgut Ton and Cocoon and is sure to bring her seamless skill of blending techno and house to the Yuma Tent.

John Digweed
Digweed’s massive reputation sure precedes him, but no one can argue that it’s not with valid reason. The progressive house pioneer has been at the forefront of dance music for the best part of three decades now, constantly reinventing the direction of this scene rather than following trends. He may be an easy pick on any line-up but this is exactly why you shouldn’t miss him: in a sky of talent, his star always shines brightest.

George Fitzgerald
The British-born and Berlin-based producer let’s his productions do the talking. With successful tracks now out on Hotflush Recordings, Hypercolour and Aus Music, it’s no surprise that he was chosen by none other than Heidi for his Essential Mix debut as part of BBC Radio 1’s Future Star of 2013 feature. If you step into the Yuma Tent during his set, expect crate-digging gems and timeless pieces mixed with effervescent flavor.

Adam Beyer & Ida Engberg
Techno’s main power couple is always a treat to catch. Ida returned to touring in 2015 after giving birth to their third child and performed acclaimed back-t0-back sets with the Drumcode label boss at Awakenings Festival, Space Ibiza, Enter Ibiza, Cocoon Amnesia and Berghain amongst others. In a line-up that leans heavily towards house, we hope Adam and Ida are ready to bring some techno to the desert.

Black Coffee
A producer and DJ that truly defies convention, Black Coffee’s meteoric rise from South Africa’s underground scene has truly turned him into a must-see act. Best described as Afropolitan, his music is home-brewed but foward-thinking and truly steps out of the realm of conventional house sets. Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, as he is known at home, spent 5 months in 2015 on a world tour which spanned 17 countries, 4 continents and saw him rewarded with a superb Essential Mix debut.

Mano le Tough
Mano’s distinctive sound has seen him grow in popularity world over and land a top 20 spot in Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ list for the past three years. And while a poll is certainly just a poll, Mano’s melodic yet driven sound has earned the attention and praise of peers and critics alike. Kristian Beyer of Âme famously said that: “Thanks to Mano Le Tough, I have no fears for the future of House.” He is no stranger to monster clubs such as Panorama Bar, Trouw and fabric, so if you’re in the mood for emotion-driven, atmospheric house Mano is your top pick.

The Black Madonna
Where to even begin? Plenty has been written on the sudden yet extremely deserved rise of The Black Madonna over the past year. Her heavy touring schedule and penchant for quality track selection have surely paid off, but there was more to Marea in a her busy year. Specifically, we loved when she truly championed women’s role in dance music during Women’s History Month by launching DAPHNE at Chicago’s Smart Bar where she is also Music Director. The party series, named after both BBC pioneer Daphne Oram and the Greek naiad Daphne, featured workshops and talks on subjects such as negotiating motherhood and working with synthesizers, as well as club nights headlined by female DJs. When all is said and done, we can’y deny our love for what The Black Madonna is doing for dance music, both behind and beyond the decks.
 TBM

Nina Kraviz
Nina’s music has evolved over the years – her sets growing to be as energetic, rough-edged and abstract as they come. Arguably, it has been a disservice to group her together with other techno artists, for her skill truly lies in blurring the lines of house and acid to unique results. Her Movement performance in May 2105 drew one of the largest crowds to the Underground Stage of the entire weekend, a true testament to the following she has built in recent years.

Maceo Plex
This isn’t Eric Estornel’s first Coachella rodeo and surely won’t be the last. But if you’re looking for top-notch assured quality then you have you to look no further than the American-born producer. Fresh off a possibly misunderstood, yet immensely brilliant Essential Mix return, Maceo will be back at the Yuma Tent with a point to prove. And trust us when we say that it’s surely going to result in a treat for anyone in attendance.

Gesaffelstein: The Countdown Begins

Gesaffelstein’s official site has gone offline as of this morning, and in place a 63 day countdown begins. After a memorably dark and intense performance at Coachella for his last live show for the Aleph album tour, the prince of techno and mastermind remained silent following the release of “Conquistador,” a collaborative piece with Jean-Michel Jarre. “Conquistador” was released as a single the day after Weekend 2 came to a close.

Notorious for his mind-blowing and meticulously curated visual shows depicting black and white scenes reminiscent of pages in art history books, Gesaffelstein is no stranger to orchestrating music that dwells upon visceral fascinations from distant and dark corners of the mind. His music is strangely pure in form and execution, yet it elicits sensuously hedonistic tendencies that remain silent amidst calculative consciousness. Gesaffelstein has consistently played for Hard Events in Southern California and has risen to the top ranks, headlining Hard Day of the Dead and most recently Coachella.

What will happen as the fated day of September 11 approaches? We may be hopeful that a new album is in the works or perhaps an opening of a new era by Mike Levy.
